This album is kinda like Dark side of the moon for hip hop. Hard to overstated its place. It’s easy to take it for granted but it’s insane to image creating that album with just a sampler and god knows how many records he listened to. It’s genius for sure.

I really like this record and understand its importance however having heard much of what its influenced beforehand I find it quite patchy to listen to with only a collection of the tracks having the magic. Its also dirt cheap to buy, one of the many 90s hip hop records that were mass produced on CD and are now subsequently cheap!

one of my favorite DJ Shadow tracks is actually on a DJ Krush album. It's called "Duality" and it's crazy. First you have Krush's dark beats and an interlude that seems to sample musique concrete, and then DJ Shadow kicks in with one of his best breakbeats ever (he also reuses one of the samples from "Endtroducing"). Check it out
@therealmythtm5642
@therealmythtm5642 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is super late but I'm so glad I see another rare sight of someone praising 'Duality'. Not only one of if not Shadow's best feature contribution but one of Krush's best song as well. Even ifi think Entroducing is the better album between both their catalogs, I prefer DJ Krush as a whole. Much more consistent. Side Note though: The album Duality came from (Meiso) was made in 94 and came out in 95 so Shadow probably reused it for Entroducing, not other way around. Bit not completely sure

This album not only saved my life, but it changed the way I looked at everything, especially music! I realize that not everyone will have the same experience I did when listening to this album, but it's an album that must be listened to by any fan of music. There is not a single album like it, it's my favorite album of all time. Anytime I think of this album, I just wonder how different everything would be for me had I never discovered it. It has helped me so much in life and is what ultimately got me into music of all kind and making music. To this day has the same impact of when I first listened to it. P.S. The Number Song samples Orion by Metallica, that's the dirty background noise Anthony refers to. Surprised he didn't know that lol

Technically, hip hop is a culture. rap music is part of that culture. not necessarily being the sole form of music that represents the culture. personally, i feel illmatic is the greatest hip hop album, but it is also completely reasonable to have an instrumental hip hop album (especially this one), as your favorite hip hop album :)

The buzzing organ/bass on The Number Song is Metallica's Orion intro on Master of Puppets. I've read that Cliff Burton played his bass through Leslie speakers, which could explain why it sounds both like a growling bass and a buzzing organ.

Thank you for reviewing this Anthony. I first discovered Shadow through a Chevy commercial which used "Building Steam", I did a little research, listened to a couple tracks, then in June I found the album at a little music store on the boardwalk in Ocean City NJ, and promptly bought it. I remember not fully understanding the album the first time I listened to it, but after a couple listens? I LEANED into it. It quickly became a new all-time favorite, and I've been listening to it on-and-off for half a year now. One of my resolutions is specifically to cut down on Endtroducing, and you posting this very thoughtful review was a great little sendoff, once again, thank you.

Just recently discovered this, everything about this album is cool as fuck! 🔥, from the artwork to the unique style of production. Whilst i dont like every song i appreciate the creativity in each of them but for me ‘midnight in a perfect world’ is just fucking incredible, the fact he made it all on a mpc60 with only a couple of seconds record time is even more impressive. It has its own unique sound that works & thats why its amazing... im not even sure id class it as ‘hip-hop’ it just has its own genre

6 years later. I just got here after listening to Midnight In A Perfect World, interested in Anthony's opinion on this album. The album puts me in a melancholic and relaxed mood. It reminds me of simpler times. The album cover really adds to the atmosphere of it all - I know covers aren't talked about often, but imo they add an important flair to an album! I really enjoy how you express your opinion and the way that you're describing songs. I wish I was nearly as decent in putting my thoughts together like that. It's funny to say, but this review puts me in a similar way the album does. 6 years later, I wish I could go back in time, play the album, watch Anthony's latest video, and enjoy life for a little while. :-)

It's crazy when you listen to the song he sampled for Building Steam - it's so simple but it comes out so damn thick

It's funny that you said Building Steam is almost soundtrack like, it was on the soundtrack for Splinter Cell: Conviction during a pretty powerful moment and the issue with Organ Donor being too short, there is an extended haul of the song on Spotify or on youtube. :)

When that album came out it was more of a trip hop album than hip hop. I wouldn't consider it hip hop considering there's not rap songs on the album. You have to realize that electronic music was still new and very underground back in 96', it was those people that picked up this album. It was a sign of the time of what other people were putting out in the trip hop genre. I think Dj Shadow just did his own take on the genre and pulled it off well. I think it's been considered hip hop in the last 10 years since edm and hip hop have fused more. I happened to buy this album when it came out, and at first I didn't like it, then I came to really love it a few months later and still a classic to me today.

I'm not an avid hip-hop fan but I've more than often found myself fascinated with some great instrumentals. This album is the Valhalla of this notion.

I love that you've reviewed this album. Fortunate enough to have it on this fancy new thing they call vinyl. Midnight In A Perfect World has to be one of my favourite songs of all time. Loved that you don't score classic reviews too. They speak for themselves. I was hoping you'd have a listen to the new Sikth EP 'Opacities'. Would love to know your thoughts on it. Cheers, Tony... i can call you Tony, right?

A cornerstone of my music collection. Bought on cassette the day it came out in 96 & changed my musical thinking about everything. Introduced me into a whole other world of things I never would've known had existed & still to this day influence me heavily. One problem with this review though is calling things trip-hop when it's just simply instrumental hip hop that tried to find the edges of how far that sound could be pushed.

I read online that DJ Shadow created this album at a time in his life when he was depressed and he put that feeling into the tunes. If you keep that in mind, this album is all the more better because you realize the headspace of the man it came out of, which makes it more impactful. I discovered DJ Shadow on the amazing 90's documentary about NYC underground homeless (they literally lived underground as in... under the streets) called Dark Days. He provided many tunes for it. I HIGHY recommend a watch!

This is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. Such a sick masterpiece! Must be quite the catch 22 for an artist to create an album with this much success without feeling the pressure to create an even better album the next time. A fun thing is that is it is frequently mentioned in A LOT of listings like: Albums to listen to before you die, Greatest albums of all time etc. Still listening to it really often
