I was 9 years old and remember it was a big deal back then. Over the years other musicians have committed suicide like Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell but their deaths didn’t have such a large impact like Cobain. Could be representative of how much society has changed and that nowadays there really is no voice of a generation since people just stream music and listen to various artists. Music does not connect as many people as it used to.

I was only 7 years old when it happened. I remember waking up before school and my 3 older sisters were crying. The man who sold the world played in the car on the way to school, then I heard my friends older brother practicing it on his guitar after school. This was the first time I can remember perceiving music to be more than just sound. The universal emotion of it all was quite something to feel at such a young age, but I’m really glad I have that memory. R.I.P. Kurt

Overrated? Fuck no. They deserve all the praise they get. They shook shit up and changed music back in the 90's. How that translates to being "overrated" is beyond me. My honest opinion is that people just love to be "different" and say this band is overrated like they're superior to those who enjoy the band. Nobody was doing what Nirvana was doing back then. Hell, I don't think people are doing it now. Again, overrate? Not at all.

Agree i cant seperate them, they are both very different both perfect timeless albums. People just put down Nevermind because its more poppy and popular but front to back its a perfect album. Then you have In-Uetro that is the perfect follow up, its heavy, raw but full of texture and has so much variety on it. IMHO Nevermind is like Nirvana channeling the Pixies and In-Uetro is like then channeling the Melvins.

Not trying to be a picky jackass, just throwing this in there; "Dumb" was actually very straightforward with its lyrics. Kurt said that he wanted to write more songs like it because it was a happier song and he was tired of writing sad, angry stuff. I believe once or twice he said it was his favorite song on the album because of this reason.

I think they are the *best* grunge act that was... I think it's ideally raw and heroin despair lingers heavy in AIC's catalog that doesn't come through with many of the other big grunge acts. Soundgarden had the "best" vocals, but n not the whole grunge label fits into all the music... Nirvana was amazing and popularised the genre so legendary but actually the content is average when compared to AIC etc

According to Kurt, most of the lyrics were not about his own life. Maybe you didn't know, or maybe you just don't believe him. Either way, they do have a dreary character about them that says something about his state of mind, so perhaps they were an accidental self-portrait.

IMO this album is just one giant cry for help from a man who has no one around him who knows how to. The whole album is so dark, so painful. He even plainly screams out "Rape me...waste me, do it and do it again" to the people around him using his health and well-being for money and fame. Then on other tracks he just flat out tells you he's numb and can't even feel sad (Frances Farmer). This is by far the realest, darkest album I've ever heard. It's a sonic cry for help and it blows my mind this guy could be screaming out in pain this loudly and still be getting whored out by the seemingly oblivious corporate rock pimps. It's very...disillusioning. Fact: The last single on In Utero released was Pennyroyal Tea. The B-side? "I Hate Myself and Want to Die."

A lot of bands make songs like that without being quite so emotionally damaged that they're going to shoot themselves. It's hard to discern which band is making songs that are actually a cry for help and which bands are writing songs like that simply because they know how to do write and market them. Nirvana being as big as it was made it incredibly hard to tell if it was actually a cry for help or just occupying their raw, emotional niche, just like Linkin Park's case after them: how many of their songs were a cry for help and how many were like that because it was what they knew how to make?

@DelayedJet
@DelayedJet 5 жыл бұрын
Kurt wrote "Rape Me" sometime before Nirvana exploded--meaning that it was written way before his trouble with the media. It's not written about him. It's literally just meant to be a blunt anti-rape song. Also, he stated that In Utero wasn't a very personal album. Obviously, it's quite easy to project a lot of the themes onto Kurt, given what he was going through, but they weren't actually written about him. He, on a personal level, probably projected the way that he felt during the writing process, since that's quite a natural thing for a songwriter to do, but the songs aren't based on him, per se. It's interesting, because I was watching an interview with Thom Yorke, and he was saying that by the time they were writing and recording Kid A, his songwriting was becoming less and less about him. But, again, when you're writing stuff that sounds so personal, but isn't about you, you're still going to be drawing emphasis from your own personal experiences and feelings. There's going to be some relation or connection with you, somehow, somewhere. So, it kind of turns into your own interpretation of what is supposed to be happening in the song, whether it's written about someone in particular or not. I think that's where Kurt was coming from when discussing many of the lyrics of this album. Personally, I'm only concluding that In Utero isn't a cry for help because Kurt said so.
@benjamindevlin4057
@benjamindevlin4057 3 жыл бұрын
I think about half of the songs are personal. Frances Farmer in no way is about him, it's about Frances Farmer. The only one that I'm truly disturbed by (in a good way) is Milk It. That song is the most creative form of self-loathing I've ever heard. Instead of using lyrics that are obviously about depression and addiction (Alice in Chains' Dirt comes to mind, and I love that album) he uses a metaphor of a virus and parasite using him as a host. It's too clever and disturbingly poetic to even make me sad. I could see how this album is a downer for a lot of people, but I think Kurt was able to turn something that would normally be sad into something clever and witty and entertaining. I think he probably amused himself to write lyrics as disturbing as those instead of saying outright that he's depressed.

Love In Utero. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite Nirvana album as I love them all, but if I could only listen to one Nirvana studio album for the rest of my life, In Utero would be it. It's got everything Nirvana was about on one album. You have the heaviness on songs like Scentless Apprentice and Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle.The catchy hooks and riffs on songs like Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me and All Apologies. Songs that can translate played electric or acoustic like Pennyroyal Tea Also the band's more experimental side on songs like Milk It and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. It's a dynamic album that is multi dimensional. Was the last album I bought on cassette tape before getting a cd player back in the day too lol.

Great review, thanks. Although, re: Rape Me, I've always understood that the lyrics are not about literally asking to be raped (or otherwise violated) but is supposed to condemn or hold a mirror to the rapist. There is self deprecation/hatred, yes, but it's more about empathy for the victim. The lyrics, like many on this record, I believe, obliquely reference Kurt's sense of having his privacy invaded by fame (and specifically the damning Vanity Fair article about Kurt and Courtney's perceived family dysfunction)
@elizaidatejeda7102
@elizaidatejeda7102 7 жыл бұрын
Noir Spectre Actually, Kurt confirmed MANY times that it's about rape. This song was supposed to be very blunt towards the subject because whenever he writes a song similar to this, people connect it to his personal life and end up badly interpreting it. he even talked about how some people tried to say that this song is about him talking about the media. he denied this meaning and simply said it's about rape (and what the previous commenter said as well)

Such a great reply to "Nevermind", both brilliant in their own ways. The band definitely seemed to push for a more challenging listening experience with "In Utero", but Kurt's pop sensibility still shines in a myriad of ways. "All Apologies" is such a gorgeous swam song from Kurt, it's a tough album to listen to because of moments like that. Nirvana could have done so much in the future, and easily could have broken through the "grunge" scene, and made something new.

Nirvana were my gateway to underground music. I had a huge Nirvana phase back in middle school and thanks to Kurt being so vocal and upfront about his influences I was able to discover bands like Sonic Youth, Pixies, and the Stooges. This album in particular opened me up to more abrasive sounds and introduced me to the name Steve Albini. Nirvana may have not been as original as some people give them credit for, but they did write fantastic songs that really hold up and are a great introduction to the less mainstream side of rock music. To anyone who complains about them being overrated or overexposed: nobody would've agreed with you more than Kurt Cobain.

As a guy who appreciates Nirvana, without ever having been a fan, I must say this is their golden album. Holds up so much better than their other records. I think that if Kurt Cobain didn't killed himself and Nirvana would've existed for a longer period and they would've released more albums it would've gone 2 ways: 1. Either every single new album would've been very successful 2. They would've flopped massively and maybe one or two new albums would've been very good (Sorry for the bad English, I don't know if I used the tenses correctly 😭)
