I am a beginning DJ, and I had been trying to learn how to beatmatch for 3 days, and I wasn't getting anywhere. I watched this vid, did what he said, and what do you know? 4 AM in the morning, fooling around with the technique in the vid, and I beatmatched the tunes perfectly. Thanks for the vid :D

I learned this when you showed it, this exact video taught me the way I beatmatch even today, on whatever. It is so much easier and better than repeatedly making slight guess adjustments just to realize it's going off again... With this technique, I can have two decks play without having to make any post adjustments for a few minutes 99% of the time

Thanks for this video, but how do you match the bars? I mean ho do you avoid to have like the 3/4 of one record matched with the 1/4 of the other one?
@DJTLM

This is a known method, but the only time I use this method is when i'm mixing in a acapella because touching the platter will have an ugly effect on the vocal. Otherwise I will allways touch the record beacause (for me) it works 10 times faster than this pitch method. Offcourse I never change the pitch and touch the record at the same time! first I give the record a quick tap and than I adjust the pitch, give it another tap and than adjust the pitch again.

I dont agree with that comment at all. Having CDJ's does make the whole task easier but it lets you push the envelope much further. Sure just fading between tracks is easier but its about the additions that you put in. If you are lazy its easy, being creative takes skill

Very interesting to watch you mix without being hands on. I must say that I cant help but caress my platter and twiddle me vinyl, however I will try and have a go. I particularly liked youre comment regarding the need for DJs to pay total attention to ones decks, mixer and sound rather than looking good for a crowd. Watching someone engrossed in a mix is a beautiful thing, cheers matey, Iain

Yeah the pitch 2 method of beat matching is good to learn and can be very helpful every DJ should learn this. However if you are House mixing and have the 2 tracks in the mix for around a min, then you do need to fine tune with your fingers to lock in the pitch. Then if it starts to go out slightly you can just move the pitch very finely to keep it in time! Sometimes you can have warped vinyl where the needle will jump if you touch the record, so you can use this method to beat match!

Having been mixing since 1981 in clubs b4 1200s were everywhere.. Ive never seen a dj in all these years use only the pitch to control the beat match. I'm just so impressed, you are totally outstanding and a joy to watch. Unfortunately Im too long in the tooth to change now so I stick with "touchy feely!". But wish i could be in total control with those sliders. Thx for the videos, Loved the way you mix (even on your CD mixes!) - Respect!

@666blackstatis666 yea i wached some and i must give the guy a + for making pretty good tutorials for beginners, he explains very thoroughly the basics and how it should be done and there is nothing bad with that cuz beginners come in 2 kinds, the ones who dont need this cuz they know just what to do by sniffing a 1200 and the ones that will never leave a bedroom but that doesnt mean they cant do this hobby so tutorials like this is a good thing i only dont agree on this platter thing. thats all

They are good points and yes everyone has their own technique but this style of mixing is more suited to as you said Jonathan cheap decks with no power, I find you get better results on technics when touching the platter and using the pitch, I changed my whole technique when I upgraded to these decks and it paid off big time. You have to learn how to touch the platter otherwise it will sound pants.

You need to understand why a DJ puts his finger on the platter. The little light on the platter illuminates the dots, you slow down the record with your finger while looking at the speed of the dots -THEN YOU ADJUST THE SLIDER. You must have seen a DJ that did not know what he was doing or you did not understand what he was doing. The slider technique that you show does work but takes longer to beat match.

dude, i have been djing in clubs since 1985 and i allways find this a bad way, my guess that you looked before making this movie where to put the pitch control, i wanna see you do this fast if i give you some tunes you dont know, best way is to slow down using the old finger and set pitch accordingly, this only takes time and only good for belt driven shit

sometimes i use the platter for quik adjustments because i dont use headphones. serato lets you visualize the bars but never use only the platter just to look cool, you also have to match bpms so when you take your had off the platter it doesnt sound like shit.

I'll agree with you bro, but everyone has a slightly different style of doing it. I think he's trying to make it easier for people watching or the less experienced to understand. He's basically just trying to get a point across. Been djing since '82 and i never touch the platter, i can just grab records and instantly beat match them without checking them and keep them perfectly matched for as long as i want or need only using the pitch control.

I myself did this and regretted it, as have others I know! Reason 2) If you decide to give up mixing after a while Technics / vestax etc, will have a proportioanaly highr 2nd hand resale value than a cheap pair of belt drives. you could loose more than half your money selling on belt drives, but a good condition pair of technics with box and instructs, etc will resale only a fraction under new price.
@dibley1973
@dibley1973 16 жыл бұрын
By all means buy a fairly cheap mixer to start with, but don't buy cheap decks. Why? Reason 1) If you buy cheap descks they will react quite different to industry standard decks like Technics 1210, or Vestax. This will be even more proniunced if the decks you buy are belt drive rather than direct drive. -> 1210s are direct drive. If you were to decide to upgrade in the future to 1210s you will have to relearn your mixing technique slightly.
@staticfive
@staticfive 17 жыл бұрын
2) As someone said on another page, the light on the deck is in AC and is actually flashing at the dots on the edge. When you're at +/- 0, one of the rings will be stationary. You can use these dots and your finger to get a baseline for where the pitch should be

Because then you'll be a REAL DJ not some computer/program using PHONY!!!

I have always mixed using the pitch controls only too, but have always worried about decreasing the lifespan of the controls because of it. I know technics are very well built and heavy duty, but extreme pitch movements as seen in your video must surely knacker the controls very quickly? If the effects are negligable then great! cheers

Personally I'm not familiar with how good or bad Gemini's high-end decks are. If you are strapped for cash, look for a set of good condition second hand Technics on eBay. If you decide not to carry on they will resell at nearly same as you bought them if you look after them properly.

I always try to use the pitch fader for adjustments, but when it comes to fine tuning I will "nudge" the label to speed up or "squeeze" the pin to slow down. There are a lot of people who I know don't like this and Paul Johnson was one of them. He was strictly a pitch fader adjustment guy.

You can "LOCK" six different elements your saying?, highly doubt that. I have been a Dj for just as long as you claim & NEVER have I used "X-DJ" while referring to myself. The point of the video is to get beginners on the right track thru learning to do things the "RIGHT" way. Teaching them how to mark their tracks & basically "Short Cut" their way thru IS NOT THE POINT HERE. Maybe if YOU never learned that you STILL ME BE A "DJ CURRENTLY" Mr. X DJ, & Yeah, 6 Tracks locked, I DON'T SYNC SO!

Hey buddy.... Have you ever heard the definition on "Insanity"? That is what TOUCHING THE PLATTER RELATES TOO!!!! IF THE TEMPO SHIFTS THE ONLY WAY TO ADJUST PERMANENTLY IS TO USE THE PITCH. WHAT GOOD DOES TOUCHING THE PLATTER DO IF ITS GOING TO COME BACK OFF IN A FEW SECONDS? WHY BATTLE AND SOUND --- SLOPPY-- ........ X DJ'S ARE WORSE THAN A WANNABE. WHATS THE MEANING FOR (X) AGAIN? ...... QUIT!
@djpacoherte
@djpacoherte 12 жыл бұрын
Ok .... Good Question. When it comes to Vocals "Key" is important. On Serato Or Tracktor there is a little button on the side that called, "KEY LOCK" that enables you to keep all samples and vocals on original key and still lets you bring the track slower and faster in bpm hence enabling A LOT of the MASH UPS you hear today. ON Vinyl you have to really listen for whats behind the vocal. Like the beat its layered over. Break Beat - 4x4 etc it all will work in key if the bpms are already close.
@djpacoherte
@djpacoherte 12 жыл бұрын
Yes its harder.... but it teaches you to just use the PITCH. If you touch the platter at all on any belt driven table it will STOP!! SHIT!!! JUST LOOK AT IT HARD ENOUGH IT STOPS. When you can mix no problem on belt drives and gain your confidence on them, Just wait till you get on some technics!!! It will be the difference between a bicycle and a Harley Davidson. You'll be glad that you learned the RIGHT way!! Cheers!

I agree and I don't agree. Let's say this- I know my tunes well enough I don't have to wear out my pitch doing this. I make very small adjustment to the pitch and touch the platter to get it in sync and it's done. If it doesn't hold for 32 or 64 beats (what I am aiming for) I make the small pitch correction and perhaps touch the platter where needed. Unless it's electronic music it won't stay on 100% for no 5 minutes. Been DJing since '90. Yes- I started with belt drive back before my 1200s.

@dickie6000 SHORTEN YOUR SWINGS. WHEN YOUR ON THE MATCH SPOT DONT JUMP ALL THE WAY TO TEN + . JUMP LIKE 2 TO 3 % away from it. Then go down going another % lower then SWING up again going even one more % Lower and You get the effect WE CALL "LOCKED" which is perfection. For example ... Beat is on say +3 ... then it start to go slow and come off shoot up to +6 and then down to 0%+ and then back up to 5% and again and your locked. Sometimes tOO locked and its hard to tell which is which sometimes!

@juzsomeguy22768 .. Wise yes..... Ass??? At times i can't deny. The reason I asked what I did was because back in the 80's the Beat Sequences and BPM really varied between songs. Unlike todays electronic music that follows the same blueprint (4 on the 4 Floor etc) back then tracks really drifted a lot and were almost unpredictable at times in the mix with sudden breakdowns and what not, But that would be the only reason I could see your point cause YOU DO HAVE TO REALLY ALMOST RUB the platter.
@EmmanoTV

@nekonaru16 I would add that music programming, feeling the atmosphere and the crowd are very hard things, and this is an art in itself ! Then, what you see on this video is only basic technic... any DJ needs to know how to do it, and in fact, a set with only beatmatched transitions is not a technical performance and not an artistic performance if the music programmation isn't good. Now, as I hope you can imagine what it is, this is an art...

THIS IS A TERRIBLE WAY TO TEACH PEOPLE TO BEAT MIX! i recommend you do as most djs would... use your finger to slow down or speed up the track (either by dragging your finger on the centre label of your vinyl ,by squeezing or turning the spindle, or let your finger drag along the side of the platter), then adjust the pitch control accordingly. this way you can adjust the pitch instantly with your hands and then know exactly how much to adjust the pitch control to compensate. EASY! :)

@Point1991 It comes in time, start listening to vinyl at different speeds, you'll get it. It's not something that can be taught. I asked the exact same question before I started out on the decks about 9 years ago, I was told to just practice practice practice, best advice I could've been given. There are so many different styles of mixing, you will use and develop the one that's right for you!

I've learned a lot from you tnx.you are and good teacher.but what do you think of synq dcm 1000.and would you even want to give a lesson.how to mix different styles.like example 80s 90s r&b rap together.for a wedding or anything else.I normally do electro house.I am familiar with them.but 80s and 90s and r&b I have some difficulty with.The reason I ask that.because I'm in 2011.continue with weddings and stuff.if my english is not so good.sorry for that.am from belgium.continue the good work.
