In this video i give a demonstration on mixing a trip hop toon. All you need to remember is the counting / timing and sound/ key of the toons being mixed.
clost to camera, Primal scream " Jailbird" , Lena Conquest "boundaries"

there are a few different terms for trip hop. some say its just sort of odd music where a woman drowns over it. another term is the music in this video. another for trip hop (and is mine) is just music with trippy effects. some have hip hop style beats. some are more house-ish example:audio bullys-shot you down

I'm a DJ myself and I do not do it because of fashion. Dig that you make fun of Tiesto ;-) But, I really do not understand what you are getting at with all this. It's about getting the job done right and with so many differences of DJ personalities and audiences I really think every situation is its own thing.

When the beats start getting more complex it sometimes sound as if things are not in time even when they are! Some of the 'Nu Soul' type stuff is really annoying because the producers deliberately place the beats in weird positions.

Music is based upon sound. I do not go to clubs and check out DJs to watch videos. I do not go to concerts to see visuals. You are trashing DJ's and you know nothing about it because you do not do it yourself!

@razer710 well guys can sing it too just look at massive attack or tricky. i think thats a bit of a stereotype u know like all symphonic metal bands have to have a female singer or all goth bands have a male and female vocalist. i dont really believe that the gender of singer affects the genre.

Trip hop is more similar to drum&bass (downtempo) tan hip-hop. crazy dude! to much black influence in your head, u can not see further than that.. que mentira es esa! hip hop y trip hop no tienen q ver nada! es como drum&bass mas downtempo y trankilito. esa gentuza..

Hey Jonathan - Loved the video. What CD decks & mixer are you using? They look like the Pioneer DJM-700 but what about the CDs? I'm currntly playing on a Numark CM200 mixer and CDN-90 dual deck.. but would LOVE to move to a system more like yours!

I hate rap music but i love trip hop, like Saltillo's Ganglion album, one of my favorites. I find it a lot of the time to be quite relaxing music for the most part. I'd love for anyone to point me out to some similar trip hop artists like Saltillo.

Jonathan, great post. For those that are still having trouble with syncopated beats, you might want to try listening to the snare or kick drums in a song to find the bars. Sometimes it's a bit easier to hear the where the bars begin and end when you're focusing on one of the other sounds. This is especially true for very instrumental/jazzy tracks where the rhythm of the bass/kick drum isn't wasy to spot.
