Digging the concept of "units". Great way to have tested tracks with freedom and flexibility.

Great beginner intro to the concept of phrasing for the sake of knowing what it is. Units are also ok for a planned studio mix. I don't agree with or like the idea of units for live (to a crowd) mixing however. If you play out a lot, your sets will start to sound the same even if the units are mixed differently. Additionally, If a track in your unit doesn't go over as well as you'd like and you want to shift away from the unit before track one is over, you need to be able to work on the fly. The best way is by feel and knowing your music. There is no easy "hot cue" for vinyl. For CDJ and controller mixing, another great method is setting a loop and using a filter and/or EQ to create a breakdown while dropping in your next track. My personal feeling, having been a professional DJ since 1993 and lover of house genre music, is that constantly phrase mixing tracks on the existing break exit is, and sounds, boring. It lacks audible creative difference in the mix sound and style. But hey, I also like very small timing errors that not only show "sync" is off but that work to add tension to your mix. To each their own however. This is just my style :)

hi, how can i label or introduce some info in order to remember the phrases length? I know i can name the CUE point with that info but i don´t find it useful. I need to press the CUE point to see the lenght. I would need to know the lenght in advance in order to prepare the phrase for the other deck.

Hi! I'm a beginner, I had downloaded the same songs and I can't find what part of the first song the count has started. I had started the count on Deck B 24 bars from the beginning and placed a marker, however, it's what part of the first song on Deck A the count was started. Gerald Sr.

Someone please help me, I'm new at this: I ripped over 100 songs directly from the CD to a flashdrive then I took the flashdrive and played it in my car and all songs were great, clear and no glitches/scratches/skips, played the songs on my laptop which is associated with my traktor and still no problems, songs were fine. So I downloaded the songs from flashdrive to my laptop desktop, so of course now my traktor can find the songs. But when my traktor finds them they all come out with breaks in all 100 song every 1 to 3 seconds. I know there is nothing wrong with the songs or how I downloaded them or the source however I think my setting on my traktor are wrong and cant analyze the songs properly, can you help my fix this problem? I used Power2Go to rip the Audio from D:/ (CD/DVD compartment) to E:/ (flashdrive). The format settings on Power2Go is: WMA the Quality says 96000bps(5 min(s)=3.51mb). Based on these settings what should I be inputting in my traktor s4 mk2 to get my songs to come out properly?

Music is all numbers! just count! :)
@vitormatias198310 жыл бұрын
never counted, never needed it. to mix music u should just feel. but this is useful if u want to have planned mixes. but I choose to improvise. and I can count phrases without counting, I mark mentally every point as 8, 16, 32 and two times 32, up to five times 32, without having to concentrate much nor think of numbers.

yes I am :D really. I am. my ears are astonishingly trained. I ear differences in speed just from the tone from two chest kicks together, without them being apart, just milliseconds of difference. that is very rare. and I count without counting. I never had to count. if someone needs to count, then he shouldn´t be a d.j. cause a person that doesn´t feel that and every aspect on a piece of music by instinct, has no clue of what it is then. counting is for complete idiots.

Just for clarification, iPad doesn't work with the older version of the S4. It has to be the newest version to work.

"typically with dance music we divide it into bars and beats" no fucking shit, last time I checked that was the same with all music
@TheHappy13379 жыл бұрын
+Ian Summers I agree with you, but I'm pretty sure you can count all music with bars and beats...it's universal.
@imsgoalie19 жыл бұрын
It's really not universal. I think in western music, even music where there isn't precussion, we're used to there being repeated patterns, which lends itself to measuring the music in bars, beats, etc. But there is a fair amount of music that doesn't have any obvious sort of structure, let alone precussion. I'm thinking of some music from Bali in particular right now, though I'm sure there's other examples. This sort of very loosely structured music (if at all) is not that easy to measure in beats or bars, and if you could it would be nearly arbitrary relative to the content of the music. .

What is this guy teaching people about DJ'ing . little too structured to me ! I never thought of mathematically working out where I was in a track, I just did 4-7 hour stints on the decks at some pumping raves back in 1990s, we just Knew what we were doing without pictures and crap, just 2-3 SL2s, vinyl, PA and some electricity :).. Shame he was too young to miss outr on the fun!!

I spun trance in the 90's. Those tracks were almost all non-DJ friendly. Long intros, beak downs and finales. Tracks had to be in key and had to "math" every mix lol.
