Like Geoff, Tim does solo work where he layers his own voice and harmonizes with himself. Unlike Geoff, he generally doesn't choose songs that are bass-centered with some higher parts. His current solo album is a collection of doo-wop songs (50s and 60s) where he sings all parts of a five part harmony - bass, baritone and tenor. Those generally feature the higher parts as lead because that was the style at the time.
@michaelsoper3610
@michaelsoper3610 Ай бұрын
Although, there were also stylistic reasons, a significant reason for favoring tenor leads at the time was that in the early days of electric instruments and television, sound reproduction was far superior in the higher ranges, both with the limitations of the speakers that were useful for the relatively small vehicle road warriors playing live shows and the tinny, single TV speakers. As sound reproduction quality improved, you saw the emergence of dominant baritones like Elvis Presley and featured bass singers, in groups like the Statler Brothers' Harold Reid and the Oak Ridge Boys' Richard Sterban

I hate to spring it on ya, but you haven't even begun to hear Tim's range yet. 🤣 If you want to hear Tim singing in his lower register then check out "Brothers in Arms" - it's also one of Home Free's masterpieces. If you want to hear Tim (alone) show off most of his 5 octave range then check out Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay". And yes, The Bass Gang guys were super excited to have Tim on this song. Very nice collab. Great reaction - thanks. 🍟

From left to right, Marwan Ayman (Egypt), Peter Barber (US), Tim Foust (obviously), Tomi P (Czech Republic), and Bobby Bass (US). They have never all been in the same room. :) Each of them has a very wide range from basement to rafters. Tomi P can hit notes you won't believe on the high end, and ALL of them can go SO low. It's stunning. Oh, and that's Tim doing the arpeggiated bass.

How much fun was that! Love having Tim sing with the Bass Gang. Tim is the growl master but he can also sing high. I have always liked this song done first by the late B.J. Thomas in 1968. It was later done by Jonathan King in 1971 & Blue Swede in 1974 who both added the "ooga chaka" part. If you watch Peter Barber's reaction he says none of them were physically together which makes it even more impressive.

Nope. You said "y'all" twice. If nothing else, that makes you a Home Fry, with lots of seasoning. Love y'all's reaction! Tim is generous with his talents, and gives Bass Gang members hands up as they take their places in the new "top 4." You are right that the a cappella community is tight and supportive of one another. Not at all competetive, and often collabarative. Another collab you will enjoy is his duets (squared) with Peter Hollens, especially the earlier "Misty Mountain". Definitely, keep sharing your joys with us! 🤩

One of the most amazing things about The Bass Gang is that they have never all met in real life. Bobby and Peter are in the US, Tomi is in the Czech Republic, and Marwan is in Eqypt. So all of their collaborations are done "long distance", and have to be coordinated so that if there is any choreo they can all do it at the same time in the recording. Everything is done through green/blue screen. And of course, Tim is also in the US, but even those guys are spread out all over the country, so it's all done with one person recording both their audio and visual parts (usually at very different times), and then having to mix and match all of that together. While Marwan is the youngest of the group (I believe 19), he's also Muslim, so alcohol isn't something he's supposed to be drinking.

You should definitely watch Peter Barber's own reaction to this song. He's awesome, he's funny, and he explains so many nifty little things about the production and the experience of doing this. He also explains where they are all from, how they mix the stuff. Don't forget that what makes a good bass, is not just how low they can go - all basses go deep, it's all about how versatile they are, how they control their voices at all ranges. Tim has an exceptional 5-octave range (Check some of his solo work, for example Will you still love me / Stay). Peter also makes some really fantastic stuff on his own, he's a pro opera singer. They are all awesome guys, in their groups, solo, and together here. The big surprize to the community with this release was that TIM was collabi'ng with them, that's super awesome.

He's done a collaboration with Tim ("Misty Mountain" from "The Hobbit") that is super. Then there's Voctave. Voctave is totally different and sings different stuff--they do a lot of Disney stuff. In the whole video there is one! tenor. At the end there is a very small cameo by Casper Fox. A guy kneeling in front of Tomi P, acting if he is proposing. A very talented tenor from Denmark, who moved to Czech Republic to be near his good friend Tomi P and study bass technique (sic), which mean this high tenor now can do sub harmonics and get down there. He acts as business manager to Bass Gang, which is why he earned a cameo. None of the totally 6 singers you can see here stay in their lane, they can all be totally over the place. All Bass Gang singers have their own channels where they do incredible solo work. You are not entering a rabbit hole, but a whole warren. Then they all collaborate with other awesome artist. You have a lot of fun music exploring in front of you. My favourite is Mad World with yet another guest bass Elliott Robinson, who can go down even lower than any of these guys all in pure chest voice. Enjoy!!

I have been looking forward to you reacting to The Bass Gang and I'm glad that day is finally here!! They are such an underrated group so I agree, they should be included in the top acapella groups because they are so talented. And you are right, they all filmed this in different locations (Peter and Bobby are in the U.S, Marwan is in Egypt and I don't remember off the top of my head where Tomi is from but he is somewhere in Europe I think), they haven’t met up in person yet to film a video but hopefully, that will happen soon! You should definitely check out their cover of Centuries next, that is my top favorite song that they have ever done. Also, all of them have solo channels and they have done covers on those I would definitely recommend going down that rabbit hole too! I would recommend either Marwan's cover of Moment of Silence or Peter's cover of Enemy. I do believe you are ready for mind-blowing videos of the men of Home Free: Brothers In Arms by HF, Mayday by HF, Two Country Singers Try to Sing Opera (Nessun Dorma) on Austin Brown's channel, My Maria on Austin's channel, and Tim Foust's doo-wop on his channel. BTW Foust rhymes with oust.

For more Bass Gang fun, check out their cover of Emperor's New Clothes (Panic! at the Disco cover) and Hide and Seek with Lauren Paley guesting. These guys are pretty damn incredible! The fun part is Marwan with his juice box when the other guys have wine....he's only 19 so he couldn't have wine. LMAO. And literally NOBODY is prepared for the first listen through of this song!

A big piece of advice Tim gives to basses who ask him for pointers is to work on their high range rather than just concentrating on going lower and lower. Tim's voice dropped pretty late in high school. Until then, he was an award-winning tenor. He found all the voice coaching for him as a tenor was still important as his voice dropped. He also worked really hard to retain his high range. He worked as an entertainer on cruise lines for awhile and was literally the utility singer -- the guy who could sing whatever part was needed. His range is pretty similar to Geoff's, though their natural timbre -- where their voice has the most warmth and movement -- is different, and Geoff uses a different technique for his low notes than Tim does. A lot of folks have pointed you toward some songs where you can hear Tim's amazing highs, but you should also be sure to check out some of the songs where he goes really low. Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens has been a standard for this for a while. Brothers in Arms is newer, but fantastic. And a concert version of Your Man (not the official video on their channel (or the Morrison IL concert where he breaks the sound system)) is an absolute must. I'd recommend Russell Wolff Productions channel for good concert recordings. (Once you watch a regular concert version of Your Man, do check out the Morrison IL video. It's hilarious.) Apologies if you've already done any of these. It's hard to check things in the middle of writing a comment.

Did you know Tim was initially trained to be a tenor, but then his voice lowered down to, well, to where we've heard it?

There is one Home Free song that shows off Tim's range that is a big favorite. It's their cover of "Your Man". Originally a Josh Turner song, which is alot of bass. It is an older one but done live in what appears to be a parking garage, all in one take. It's amazing. And yes, Marwan is the baby. Lol. Anyway, Tim claims he was a late bloomer so he sang for quite a while as a tenor. Then when voice got deeper, he still had his upper range. In fact, his advice to those trying to deeper notes is to work on their upper range. Geoff has a beautiful upper range but he doesn't use it as often.

Geoff uses his upper ranges a lot in his solo videos. No need for him to go super high in VoicePlay when they've had Earl, Eli, and Cesar, other than the amazing slides like in Little Mermaid Medley, Hoist the Colors, Enemy, and Queen in Five Minutes.

@@shirleykarr560But I want to hear his upper register with the others in Voiceplay. I loved Oogie Boogie mainly because Geoff did go higher. And he looked like he had a blast doing it. Saying there is no need for him to sing higher while with the group is like saying with the group, he can only sing bass. In Home Free, Tim sings anything he may want, even with Rob, Austin and Chance fully capable of singing higher. It just makes me sad when Geoff doesn't get to sing higher with the group.

The Bass Gang has actually never met in person only on Zoom and such. They are from different countries and so have not been able to get together yet. It is amazing what they have been able to do with each other. By the way, they all think that Tim is one of the best ever bass singers simply because of his control and his range. They all blew my mind with this song. Oh and Yes Marwan is "underage" and the baby of the group and is teased about it so he had fun with it in this video.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but if you do the Bass Gang version of Mad World, the featured guest (Elliott Robinson) was actually a part of Home Free as their bass singer for a little under a year, before Tim joined. Where Tim uses chest fry and Geoff uses subharmonics, anything you hear from Elliott is pure chest voice. If you go back to Home Free's albums from 2009 and 2010 (some of which are available as audio here on KZbin), that's Elliott singing bass.

"A whole group of Geoffs." LOL! You might be ready for Mayday from Home Free now. It's been explained in comments numerous times by a guy who sings bass that the long, thick vocal folds that enable someone to sing that low also allows them access to higher ranges, like baritone and tenor. Yes, Marwan is the baby of the group. He's under 21, which is also the drinking age where he lives in Egypt. Tomi is in Eastern Europe, Peter and Bobby are in the US, and these four have never met in person. It's amazing what they've been able to accomplish.

Jen Glatzhofer (not sure I’m spelling this right) is a vocal coach as well as reactor. She says basses often have a huge range-something about being able to thin out thicker vocal chords. So yeah, Avi, Geoff, Tim, etc., all have wild ranges. Tomi’s range is over 6 octaves-he has whistle notes-I mean dude can sing higher than I can. Agree with you that these guys are coming on like a freight train. I got really excited about them from their very first video, even though they were still finding their way and working with much more limited resources than they have now. If you check out Mad World, you might just want to aim the camera at the floor because that’s where you’re gonna be after just a few notes, and you’ll stay there through the rest of the song. It’s the bassiest bass song they’ve done. You should also make a point of checking out their individual channels. All of them have some amazing music. Loved this reaction!!!

Marwan (Mar-wan) is the baby of the group--19-- and has a phenomenal range. He was 17 when they started, and does a lot of the arranging, engineering and video stuff and of course the beat boxing. He's also a Moslem and lives in Egypt. Tomi lives in Chekia. He has a 6-octave range. Peter and Bobby are in the USA in Philadelphia and the Boston area respectively. They have never all met in person, although they hope to get together in Checkia this summer. Peter is a professional operatic bass and does in-depth vocal analysis/reactions and did one on this that I think you would really enjoy. They were really thrilled to work with Tim. Definitely do "Mad World" with Elliot Michael Robinson. He is a deep natural chest bass. Fasten your seatbelt.

He also will knock your socks off with his Do-wop album and his cover of Beach Boys In My Room. He has a five plus octave range and he can do equally well in all the registers. You would also really like Avi Kaplan's solo pieces...he left PTX to go solo. Love your reactions!
