Reminds me of the joke. A man phones up to say someone is burgling his house, police respond saying they are too busy, the man phones back 5 mins later to say “don’t worry about it, I’ve killed him” two police helicopters and three vans turn up, they find the man is not dead and arrest him, they say to the homeowner “I thought you said you’d killed him?” He responds “I thought you said you were busy?”

DJ...having worked in an Esso Fuel Storage Facility...The moving tank lids are known as "FRT" (Floating Roof Tank). They have "ATG" (Automatic Tank Gauges) on the top which transmit the amount of fuel being stored in to the control room. Every now and then you have to check the functionality of the ATG by dropping a metal measuring tape into the tank and compare the reading with the ATG. I used to chalk up the tape so you can see the "Line" of the fuel. In my day you could not stay too long in the FRT because of the fumes. I think now you have to wear BA to go into them. The fuel I suspect may be pumped underground from Milford Haven (Refinery). The pipes carry petrol, diesel etc and follow each other in the pipes to the facility. This causes the different fuels to mix with each other (Interface) and this section is sent to an "Interface" tank to separate or mixed with say diesel in small quantities. The underground pipes have to be cleaned and they send a device called a "Pig" which is pushed up the line by the fuel.

The UK petroleum products pipeline system is complex - with many elements obfuscated for security. The enormous deep water harbour at Milford Haven has been repurposed in the 21st Century. The refining of imported Crude Oil has, effectively, ceased. Now specialist LNG tank ships fill new LNG tanks ashore and the re-gasification of this liquified natural gas is done on site. Distribution is mostly through the high pressure natural gas pipe work laid during the government organised abandonment of Town Gas.

The fuel is pumped into the fuel dump from a refinery. I think there are 4/5 around the country, all have underground pipelines to the fuel dumps and airports, civilian and military. The sign you saw Jet A1 is probably aviation jet fuel.

It used to come by rail from Kingsbury Terminal, you can see the rail lines terminating at the site under the A47. Looks overgrown though so there may be pipelines now, it's only 10 miles. EDIT: it is now piped from Kingsbury, you can see pipe markers at GPS 52.5591, -1.6772

I used to fly to check the pipeline of Jet A1 from Falmouth to Newquay Airport once a week. Around the country you will see white poles with orange tips on either side of the road where they cross the road. I had an OS map marked where the pipe runs.I would check no diggers were anywhere near the line.The Fuel arrived by ship into Falmouth where it is pumped overland. There is a similar system for gas.

Shame Esso phoned police but likely protocol considering protesters (who still purchase most of their goods shipped by petrol and use the public roads maintained by petrol). 👍 Esso Terminal constructed 1962 and uses the Midline pipeline constructed in the 1980s. Esso offers an 18 page pdf sales brochure (2019) for their terminals. Esso refinery located at Fawley, Southampton Water. Office block and mess were refurbished and resurfaced yard & parking, 24 hour operation.
