Thank you for the lesson! Some of us "boomers" who DJed in 1997-2004 miss the time before CD tables when everything was vinyl and turntables and there were no aids to beat match, no tempo tap, no bpm counter, just your ears. BUT I decided this year that I miss DJing enough to break down and buy digital DJ controllers, I also have my technics 1200 mkII attached so I can use vinyl too. It is amazing all the things that the new technology can do and the transition isn't that difficult. Most of us aren't pissed just nostalgic

However, people are getting smarter even it's not their thing.. They know well if you're a good mixing dj or not.. They're entertained in you mixing even with mistakes, miss beat matching and they don't like you cheating on them using Sync. Some don't actually dance just because you're good at mixing, they're dancing because they having fun know their DJ actually mixing without using Sync and for people like me, I'm most interested when a person miss beat matching.. It takes you back when mixing is not simpler as can be during the 80s and 90s.
@AllDayHockey
@AllDayHockey 4 жыл бұрын
@@reyzuna I think you are over compensating for people in most clubs, who are most likely high/drunk and the only think they care about is if the music is moving them or not. But fair enough im sure there are people out there that do pay attention to the mix quality but mostly it will be people who are also into mixing themselves, so probably a small percentage.

*Something to consider when reaching for the sync button...* There's definitely a stigma surrounding the use of the sync button (especially from old school DJ's who've been kicking since before digital DJ software) and the general consensus seems to be that DJ's who use the sync button are "cheating". By not manually beat-matching their tracks, they're taking a massive shortcut that makes them the equivalent of a human jukebox, which will make (as stated at 10:43) every other DJ hate you This thought process is shallow and outdated. When someone sets out to learn how to DJ, a lot of the times they're seeking out technical knowledge, learning what all the knobs and faders do so they can start mixing by themselves. But aside from the technical knowledge, part of the process of learning to DJ is learning to perform. Reading crowds, tailoring track selection and being able to play a dynamic set is another part of the DJing process that has to be learnt. Phrasing, energy, musical structureand effects are all other important aspect of DJing that require just as much attention as your transitions. If using the sync function to make your transitions a bit smoother so that you can focus on another aspect of your performance helps, then absolutely go for it. DJ's who flex on other DJ's who use sync might have all the technical prowess in the world and be able to beat-match Dancehall with Psytrance, but if their set is *boring*, then they're the ones who should step back and assess their skills. If you use the sync button, and what's playing sounds good, and you dance, and the world doesn't end, *don't* feel pressured to stop using it anytime soon. There's no shame in using a little tech magic if it helps you to sound better.

I've always had an interest on learning how to DJ way back 2015 but I never had anyone teach me. Equipment that time was expensive as well, so I only used a keyboard and a cracked DJ software (Traktor) to practice basic intros and outros shown in the video. It was just a hobby of mine that time. A friend of mine said that for someone without an equipment, I was doing pretty good. But I had to stop since I thought I wouldn't be able to jumpstart that career. After watching your tutorial, it brought me back to those days and it inspired me to learn more about being a DJ. I might actually go back and invest in an equipment this time. I learned a lot with this video, and I'll be watching your other video tutorials. Thank you so much.

7:07 the crossfader does not make the track 50% volume when in the middle, but it keeps both tracks at 100%, resulting in an equal mix. The track only goes to 50% volume when you drag the crossfader to 75% away.

Sir thank you, in those difficult time, I was a DJ in the 80', I am now 54 but... I still got it in me. Just bought a used Numark PRO 3 for 120$, I know it's probably not the best but I have having a blast since 3 days. I took me a good... 15 minute to get back into it, not that bad... I just loved that video, maybe some youngster that think they don't have it will try. To day trying is cheap compare to when I was 20... ha ha ha. Thanks again sir Ho, I have to say that, in those time, in the 80', the price of one record was the price of a full month subscription anywhere now... dig that.

I'm an old school DJ who started back in the late 80s. I love all the new tech, I use Traktor Scratch Pro with Control Vinyl on my Tech 1200s which I bought back in 1990. I still do mixes and turntablism with vinyl along with using Traktor and some of it's bells and whistles. I don't harp on any DJ for using what's available. In fact, I'm in the process of upgrading my Rane 56 to a new Traktor or Serato mixer in order to use all the "tools" available within either of the software programs. All I will say is, if you have a chance to "sharpen" your DJ skills by using real turntables, tonearms and cartridges, with either vinyl or control vinyl, you'll develop a better touch and overall control and understanding of the art. The best DJs I know are ones who mastered the art back in the day and then stepped forward and adopted the new tech and expanded their skill set with what's available today. The best part of Digital or Virtual DJ'ing today... Not having to haul 25 crates of vinyl to a gig... LOL... Had Traktor or Serato been around back in the early 90s, I would have used it and been a very very happy DJ not having to deal with the logistics of toting all that crap, lol. Keep the music going, the dance floor shall never die!!!

100% agree Eric! The convenience of modern technology is truly something else. In fact, I used to only have a pair of used 1200s when I started, but I really embraced the wonders digital mixers had to offer

@@djcarlo You got it! All the sounds and ideas myself and other DJs had back in the day are now possible due to new tech. What use to be an ordeal and massive planning to do a wild remix can now be done on the fly with the new stuff. Queue points, loops, effects, cut ins with samples, etc., it's amazing what you can do with a push of a button or twist of a knob now compared to burning through 6, 7, 8 or even more pieces of vinyl to get the same effect and end results.

Really great tutorial, thanks. One question though, I’m very new to this, self taught during lockdown 😂 for the most part I’ve nailed the basics but I have this one frustration that I’m hoping you have an answer. When I beat match via sync, I sometimes find the tracks to be slightly off beat and that’s when most DJ’s make use of the jog wheel turning “left or right” to get this perfectly in sync. But what if, as in my case, one is not using a DJ controller i.e. no physical deck and no jog wheels - only making use of a laptop (MacBook) and DJay Pro software, how do I get around this with the keyboard/shortcut keys? Currently my solution to this is prepping each song by editing the grid start of the downbeat (this works) but I find this method not to be the most efficient way when needing to do so on the fly during a mix practice session.
@djcarlo
