Heartened to see all the comments stating that this is the Mastodon tuning. Went to a Mark Holcomb clinic many years ago, someone asked him about when he first used this tuning, and he played March of the Fire Ants as an example. If you haven’t delved into Mastodon, do so! Best band

Periphery's got some great 6 string tunings! They started using GGCFAD (so just 1 step down on the low E to make it an octave) on Reptile & Zagreus, open C add9 for Scarlet is CGCEGD, and then Wax Wings is in D F# A E A C#!
@Blackriff99 Жыл бұрын
Surprised people are just finding this 6 string tuning variant - Architects and I think even Mastodon have utilized it a ton!

Lmao mastodon been using this tuning for 25+ years. I'm also pretty sure mastodon is a huge influence for Misha but he's too afraid of the flak he'll get if he admits that because for some reason a lot of the metal community hates mastodon for some reason.

It's still the Mastodon tuning to me, damn it!

@@alexbrown4426 people who hate Mastodon are chuds. I get if you don’t like them.. but HATE them? Cmon… some of the nicest dudes in metal are in that band. Very influential and incredibly talented band too.

Been watching thick riff Thursday for last few weeks after stumbling upon the channel, thoroughly enjoying it but then you mention Periphery and DMM in the same vid. just upped the levels of for me. My two faves, DMM open tuning has fascinated me for years and I'm not guitar player on the slightest. Highly underrated you are and stoked for what the future brings you if you stick with this.

Guitar tone sounds great btw. MASTODON plays in this tuning too. Mark Holcomb loves to play around with different tunings to come up with different stuff just like you described, it really does work. Like, when you get a bit of writer's block, try a different tuning and let things open up a bit. I like to write Lydian stuff in that weird drop A tuning.

Well... Following up on your video from two weeks ago, even though you said it is not, my brain has decided that acoustic guitar has True Temperament frets and cannot unsee, but I digress... I do not know if you are familiar with them but a band that was/is highly influential to Periphery is the band SikTh, who makes interesting use of non-standard tuning (predominantly G# - G# - C# - F# - A# - D#). Pin and Dan, the two guitarists, are wizards and play off each other rhythmically in creative ways, often based off of drum patterns such as paradiddles for example. While their music isn't for everyone, I find there are many interesting ideas to take away from their music. Thanks for this series, it's always fun and interesting to witness one's approach to creating music.

I watched the recent periphery gear video and They say that they have (not all) the guitars in GGCFAD. And they all got evertunes because of the low G. So not like standard 7 but like drop 7 tunung minus the 6th string. They use pitch shifting for other parts which go lowet down to F for example

If you find David's old tuning weird, it's easier if you think about it as 7 string drop tuning, (the periphery Ab tuning) and you only look at the bottom 6 strings, and you raise 2 of them by a whole step. This way it's much easier to process. Even most of his riffs can be played on the normal 7 string tuning, I think he realised it and now he just uses the normal 7 string drop tuning.

New to the channel, but if you like cool tunings, I have a suggestion to try out that I've been jamming with recently. If you have a baritone, it'll play nicer, but EAEADF#. It's like an 8 string without the top two strings, but I find myself playing differently than I would on my 8 string.

as a general statement you should syncopate the drums more. the drums could compliment the guitar parts so much more. i believe putting better beats in the song will increase the quality of guitar parts. try adding the drums without the metronome playing. that can actually mess you up
