I don’t think MTA is swapping fleets. I truly think this is only temporary and most likely the same reason why an R179 ran on the M line first Communications Based Train Control testing on the Queens Boulevard & Culver Lines for future CBTC operations on the 8th Avenue Line & Fulton Lines. The entire fleet of R160A-2s & R160Bs will remain in Jamaica Yard & the R179s ENY & Pitkin Yards alongside the R211As plus CBTC will soon be active on the 8th Avenue line soon and I believe they just activated CBTC on the Culver Line I could be mistaken. So yea just going to wait and see what MTA decides.

It's not temporary, the 211's will completely be replacing all other rolling stock on the A and C line. They're not many 179's running around so they will be assigned as needed. The D and B will be next in line for the 211's for 8th Ave/ CPW CBTC action.

Great video! I'm surprised it's taken the New York Subway this long to get CBTC fitted. The Elizabeth Line here in London has had it for a while now, dual signalling. So it can run on conventional lines. The Thameslink network has had it for a while too. But good to see, and I'll definitely be photographing and videoing it when I come over in February.

We’ve had them fitted on the most isolated lines like the 7 and L but have recently had CBTC fitted on more of the Trunk lines. The problem is that a lot of the older non-CBTC compatible cars needed to be fazed out of service or move to other lines without CBTC installed.

I don't think the R179s will regularly operate on the F. This set is just a loaner to test them in CBTC territory. However, the M will likely operate them regularly, since now the fleets between the J and M can be interchangeable.

The R179s on the (F) will likely be temporary, they are doing CBTC testing and how well it does with CBTC and on Queens Boulevard line. This fleet R179 will come back to the (A) line once the R179 passes CBTC testing. This will be for the future 8th Avenue CBTC to activate in 2025. This will be the same thing with the new model called the R211. QBL will probably see some upgraded fleets.

I wish the MTA would restore Bergen St's lower level and de-interline the F and G. The G can stay as is and the F can run express until Church Ave. After that, modify the track layout south of Ave X to allow full usage of the center express track and run diamond F trains on it.

⁠Nope this is not permanent these are going back to the A once testing concludes. The MTA is making sure the CBTC is working properly so their are no issues when 8th ave CBTC is complete.

Temporary for cbtc testing This isn’t permanent. Once the test is over; these R179’s will no longer service the F and will go back to its designated Yard for A Service and Jamaica Yard will recieve its Order of R211A’s for service along with 2 5 car R211T’s for G service next year.

Or maybe the G line entirely will possibly be reassigned to Coney Island yard remember when the G line was based out of Jamaica Yard it had mostly R46s then before the major fleet swaps of Jamaica & Coney Island Yards in 2019. The G line was reassigned to Coney Island yard which removed the R46s and made the G line 100 percent R68s & R68As then the R46s returned to the G after being reassigned to Coney Island Yard and currently the R160s are on the G line since the G line is based out of Jamaica Yard. It looks to me that MTA might be doing the same thing they did back in 2014-15 where they reassigned the G line between different yards. But we’ll just have to wait and see what MTA decides going forward before jumping to any conclusions.

Perfectly useful trains currently running, they could just retrofit them to today's standards, like the PATCO. Old body, new insides. Reliable. Every time NYC gets new trains, there's always something wrong with them. That's why the R32 took a while to retire, they picked up the slack after retirement when the R179 Lemons came into play. Now the R211 order were also a few lemons. Lack of privacy chairs, forcing people to sit next to each other. Very inconvenient, especially if you're an introvert.

It doesn't matter how introverted people are, they should make some friends and stop alienating people outside of their zone. It costs more to retrofit cars than replace them anyway, and it shouldn't be a question whether or not old crinkly car bodies should be used for longer than they deserve

PATCO just kicked the can down the road with their retrofit, though to be fair, NYC’s subway system is getting CBTC, so it’s more economically feasible both short and long term to procure new train cars for this. Besides, every new train car goes through some issues when entering service. The older R32 and R42s also had issues when they entered service, like faulty controllers, poor motors, etc.
