Very good explanation, and good job of putting it in context. One of my early photography profs, almost 50 years ago (yes, I'm old) liked to tell his students, "I want you to learn the rules, practice them, master them, and then forget them. If all you do is follow the rules, then you'll never produce anything but boring cookie-cutter work. Use the rules to enhance your skillset, but use them in the service of your vision".

I think it depends how you want to use the video. For cinematic effect, yes I agree the use of ND filters. But some of my drone filming is of steam trains, another passion of mine - and I often like to extract frame from video to make a still photo which works well when shooting in 4K. In that case I prefer high shutter speed. So all depends on intended use for the video.

Would following the 180 degree rule but raising the frame rate and shutter be an option for in-flight adjustment if you find the light alters? Say 60fps at 1/120th, or even 120fps at 1/240th? Would these still provide motion blur?

For photography the ND filter allows wide-aperture lenses in bright light without overexposing, shallow depth of field and selective focus effects while under lighting conditions that exceed the shutter speed capabilities of the camera. For video the ND filters allows you to reduce your shutter speed in order to follow the 180-degree rule while maintaining proper exposure. Always use the double of the frame rate to set your shuttle to avoid too much motion blur. Unless you want to create some visual fx. Note: When filming spinning things, you need to calculate the spin cycle to avoid strobes even if you use proper shuttle speed. Spinning things are the only things that you must film several times to get the right shuttle speed. Also, higher frame rate will fix most of strobes. 30 fps was the wrong frame rate to film the wind maxine. Remember that Frame rate, Shuttle speed and Subject direction/spins works together to avoid strobes/jerks. Good explanation and simple!
@n0w3lly90
@n0w3lly90 7 ай бұрын
F/2.8 is a very fast aperture, especially on a very bright, sunny day. This will sometimes mean the camera will only allow you very fast shutter speeds, and that can be problematic in videography as you won't get natural motion blur in the peripheries of the frame as you, say, pass by objects, buildings, or when things pass through frame reasonably close up. Similarly, photography, you might want some softening of static subjects, e.g. trees, or, some motion in the ocean, so to speak, if doing a coastal shot. Polarising ND filters are good too to remove unwanted reflections/ glare, saturation of colours, as well as motion blur, but they need to be used in a particular way (e.g. not into direct light sources) and need to be set up carefully
@isaaclo1016

One thing I don’t really understand about getting everything dialed in perfectly is as soon as you tilt the gimbal down or fly in a different direction all of a sudden you now need to make adjustments because your footage will most likely be too dark. If that’s the case something has to be kept in auto whether it’s the ISO or shutter speed. I am new to this so between the two what is better to keep an auto?

That video just made me more confused although you explained everything very well. On comparison I see that after stopping video the image without filter is sharp and I can see the details, with ND32 filter it's just blurry. So what's the goal? To have that blur or try to get rid of it? As a rookie operator who just started adventure with drones (got the Air 2S) I'd say that without filter image is way more sharp which would be my goal. Could you explain that in few words?

@@TECHDRONEMEDIA I think I noticed the clue after watching that part few times. Without a filter it was quite dodgy when looking at it. And looks like I have to visit few places once again to make new recordings 🤣 Thanks!

If you are coming from a Photography background than it is hard to understand because you always want to keep it as sharp as possible but in video it becomes too sharp and makes some things flicker a bit so by adding a bit of motion blur it smooths things out a bit.
