Nice honest review mate, the yaw tumble still exists with the drone so its still not 100% safe but can be avoided through how you fly the machine. Learning to fly FPV with this one has been an absolute blast the last year, ease of use and battery care were the big selling points for me also. Its nice if someones walking up you can just switch into normal mode, have a chat and give them a quick view inside the goggles before carrying on.

I've been flying the avata, mostly for freestyle, and I find it to be a lot of fun. It's easy to take everywhere and its just a new experience. There is something about throwing around the weight and ripping it that other smaller quads haven't been able to do. The prop guards also make it metal pole proof, which has given me more confidence than a carbon fiber frame. The one major issue with the quad is that the software prevents motor shutoffs in normal or sport mode. I have had many times where I crash and accidently put it into normal mode, causing it to drive itself into the ground until it turns off. I have been flying and building fpv drones before this, so this is not my first fpv drone.

Yeh I know exactly I love how portable and easy to use it is. Tbh yes this is a gripe of mine as well. In manual mode you can just shut of the motors on a switch like a traditional fpv drone but like you say when the drone goes into normal mode because of ab incident it's unable to do the same and you have to try and land it like a Mavic. This is something they should address in my opinion as sometimes it safer to be able to just shut off the motors, even in normal mode

Glad that you made this video, almost everything about this avata is good from safety, batteries , good features and easy for me to bring along for travel oversea, the only problem is power and noise. Ive struggled to make it balance during flight even just cruising not freestyle. The wind are not really that strong sometimes but yet the view ive seen from my goggle went slanted.
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 10 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. Yes I agree but I guess it is a cinewhoop at the end of the day so not really made for windy conditions. Probably DJI were marketing this one more for the indoor flyers and the DJI fpv for the outdoors people but as the DJI fpv sucks everyone was hoping the avata would be decent outdoors which it Is in the right conditions

what every video that has reviewed the avata has failed to say is that it is in fact excellent if used how it is intended i.e. slow and low not freestyle or carrying extra load. I saw a reviewer ignore high wind velocity messages as he took off and proceeded to say it flys badly in windy conditions. The problem with seasoned pilots is they expected the avata to be an all in one drone which doesn’t actually exist in the diy hobby and that’s why people have 2.5 inch cinewhoops to cinelifters to cover different aspects of their work but somehow expect the avata to freestyle as well as a 5 inch whilst being able to cinewhoop like a shendrone squirt
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 10 ай бұрын
Yeh you're exactly right. Cinewhoops have their purpose as do 5 inch, as do Long range etc. I guess something that would be amazing to see is if DJI can bring out some kind of modular fpv drone where you can take ducts on and off so we can have better flying outside in wind. I know that's something very tough to manufacture and get right as both cinewhoops and unducted drones require different tuning but I guess if anyone can do it it would be DJI. Let's see, maybe one day 😂

Hey, great video review! I used to have a CineWhoop from Rotor Riot, which was amazing to fly but very inefficient in terms of battery life. I even lost it in the rainforest due to a battery malfunction. After saving up for almost a year, I'm thinking of buying the DJI Avata. By the way , what software do you use to stabilize your action camera footage when flying FPV?

Haven’t flown the replacement much since, not sure if it’s a common problem with them…

I had to download 2 DJI software to activate the remote controller 2, even with goggles connected it doesn't detected at first time, its very unstable to start . Ive been told that 20hrs practice in Virtual flight is really needed! I've never flighted an FPV. Another thing is the goggles battery. I have an Avata and something really frustrating for me is that I can't fly at my apartment. I just cannot have any control over it when I don't have any GPS signal. Searched a lot in the internet and that seems to be a normal behavior. As it is my first drone and it is far from cheap, I'm kinda frustrated with the experience as a whole. If you're new to FPV, and drones in general, the avata motion 2 is the best drone you can buy. If you're an experienced FPV pilot you probably wouldn't have much use for the avata unless you just like the video quality. It's nice because anyone can experience FPV flight at a manageable speed and relative ease. In sport mode, we actually use one to film ground RC videos and anyone can keep even a fast and darty rc in frame with it. But I also do see the points you make in your video. It really just depends on experience and intended use, like any RC or photography product. Personally I think it felt like flying a plane in FPV with the motion 2 controller.

Nice review. Regarding the yaw and potential loss of control problem, would it make sense to have slightly wider spacing between the front situated drone rotors as opposed to the rear ones? Thus improved horizontal leverage should in principle reduce yaw and the effect of center mass (battery c of g) that is placed closest to the rear section of the drone. Just a thought, albeit that I'm not sure about this from a technical perspective with regard to drone designs.

I fly in areas where you need authorization. Found out real fast that they DJI won't allow you to fly in manual mode even with proper authorization. I escalated it all the way up to their Flysafe department and they said no. Without being able to fly in manual mode, most of your footage is at the mercy of the 1 axis gimbal and sideways footage due to it trying to hold its position. With the newest versions of Betaflight, GPS rescue has gotten really reliable. If I ever purchase from DJI again, it won't be a FPV style one. It's silly to have to get authorization to fly under 100' and then be restricted to normal or sports mode once you go through all the hoops. I can understand for long range exploratory type missions and drones that are going above the tree line.

What you forgot to say is that there is an option out there, from Axis Flying, which transforms your Avata into a quiet and powerful drone. OK, it requiers some building skills, but the result is awesome :)
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 10 ай бұрын
Yeh true that but I feel like buying a ready built drone that you then have to spend money on to completely modify is a bit counter intuitive. Having said that since I don't mind building quads it's something I may try out eventually. I've seen some videos say it doesn't improve it by a great deal and the noise level is similar but then yeh some other have said it much more improved. Have you managed to modify yours with the axis flying?

Thank you for this. The insane noise has a simple solution…$2 ear plugs from Walmart. Cheap enough to distribute to clients. I didn’t see many people to be bothered, but regarding the noise as an indicator that there’s a drone in the vicinity, standing in the open with goggles and a perceived explosive detonator offers clues as well. I agree that the quad under performs. However, comparing a lithium ion battery to a lithium polymer battery is apples to oranges. Regards

Very accurate review. I have an Avata and generally love it for the ease of use, but I'm thinking of moving to a traditional 5" due to the tumbling issue, which I trigger all the time with the way that I like to fly. So far I've always been able to catch it, but it's really annoying. Also I want more power! :-)

@@pavguliani I might be wrong, but to my knowledge the sticker on the "inside" of the battery says "Lithium Ion Polymer Battery", which means the technology is the same and comes with the same risks as every other LiPo battery. In RC cars it is common to use hardcase LiPos, but for anything airborn weight is normalle the priority. But yes, as mentioned in my earlier reply, if you have a moderate crash you might be better off with the hardcase protecting your LiPo. On a hard crash you never know what happens to either. On FPV drones the battries are normally exposed, which is not a great thing in general. But I fly with the intention to not crash, but this very much depends on flying style and risk awarness.

Would argue the DJI self-discharge feature is junk and probably doesn't do anything to help with the "safety" surrounding the battery. Have a P4 that I didn't fly frequently, and the batteries that I had both self discharged until they were completely flat and swelling. After the second battery failed with only 4 flights and just outside the warranty window, I decided to not even bother anymore, not at the insane prices DJI charges for those things.
