I admit these are not cheap batteries however their features and build quality and smart features make these the best so far. In Australia these batteries cost AU$229 each or AU$429 for two including the battery charging hub which alone is AU$70, so the fly more kit is two batteries and one charging hub for AU$429. I purchased an extra four sets of the fly more kit so now have eight of these smart batteries - so all up around AU$1,840 for the four fly more on top of the AU$1,600 for the FPV combo kit which also includes one of these batteries. Never cheap out on batteries for these high power / high drain devices like drones as its simply not worth the risk personally or hardware wise.

Thank you for the great topic and video. I am not quite sure about the 3 days term, when after this time the automatic discharging is triggered. I am used to fly RC helicopters, where the LiPo battery sets are also very expensive and thats why I immediately charging my all batteries to the storage level (3,6-3,85V per cell) after getting home after flying, like it is recommended by LiPo and LiOn producers. Than the lifetime is greatly improved by getting at the storage level as soon as possible (not in days, but in minutes). I have asked my DJI dealer about the automatic discharging of DJI FPV batteries and he says, it is supposedly after 10 days for DJI FPV batteries. The mentioned 3 days are allegedly at e.g. DJI MAVIC , AIR batteries ... I had no time to check it yet, but it is no problem to find it out by measuring. Anyway, even the 3 days are very long time. If it should be 10 days, it is very bad for their lifetime. The same with charging - it should be done immediately before flying. It simply means, not to let run the chemical processses in batterries in fully charged state, when it is very strong and it shortens significantly the batteries life. And conversely, also not let them fully discharged. This little care is money saver, even it is sometimes a bit bothering.

So i heard that with DJI batteries, the last stage of charging balances the battery. If you only charge back to 50 percent, aren't you leaving the cells in an unbalanced state during storage, and is this detrimental?

Hi Mad, thanks for an informative video! I assume most what you said is also valid for the Mini 2's batteries? One thing's is particular to the Mini 2 though, if you have the Fly More combo with the 3 bay charger be aware that it doubles as a power bank and can charge stuff off your flight batteries. But do NOT leave your batteries in the charger when long term storing them since they will not then self discharge!
@algreen746
@algreen746 2 жыл бұрын
Can I just add a note about cancelling the auto-discharge? Correct me if I'm wrong; assuming the lipo cells act like traditional lipos, keeping them fully charged for an extended period of time can, and likely will, cause the battery to swell and potentially ignite. Cancelling the auto-discharge is doing exactly this, so anything over a week or so isn't advised. If you're not going to be flying any time soon, just let the discharge happen and recharge when you're ready to fly.

You've done a nice summary on the batteries. Several years ago, I got a phone call from an LG Chemical sales manager who worked at the headquarter. He asked me the possible use of Li-Polymer or Li-ion batteries for UPS system for broadcast transmission sites. I asked back to him 'What's the optimal operation temperature for Lithium-based batteries?" He answered me without hesitation. It's 25 degrees Celsius. Below/above 25 degrees, you could face the reduced battery capacity with no exception. You'd better change your comment with 15 degrees in the video.
@PaosElectronicDreams
@PaosElectronicDreams 3 жыл бұрын
this is an excerpt from a Sandia National Lab report, USA. Even the sealed lead acid batteries are designed to operate in 25 degrees Celsius with no exception. The optimum operating temperature for the lead-acid battery is 25°C (77°F). As a guideline, every 8°C (15°F) rise in temperature will cut the battery life in half. VRLA, which would last for 10 years at 25°C (77°F), will only be good for 5 years if operated at 33°C (95°F). Theoretically the same battery would endure a little more than one year at a desert temperature of 42°C (107°F). core.ac.uk/download/pdf/195152718.pdf pp.9

I think your misunderstanding what I am saying, Yes I am well as wear of 25c is the sweet spot but isdeal reange is 20-30C for Lipo packs, the DJI Smart battery will prevent take off below 15C, between 15-20C it will allow flight but you need to let it warm up and be easy on the cells. Yes in the ideal world you would not flt below 25C but that's not realistic and the batteries will self warm to 30C with use as well.
@PaosElectronicDreams
@PaosElectronicDreams 3 жыл бұрын
@@MadRC Sweet spot of the battery cells are relatively narrow for Litihim-based rechargable drone batteries. It would go much worse in less than 10 degrees Celsius. Warming up the battery by hovering could work but the overall life of the battery would go into vain. I didn't said that you are wrong. 25 degrees Celsius is mandatory for normal use of all the batteries. That's the limitation of early 21st century technology.
@PaosElectronicDreams
@PaosElectronicDreams 3 жыл бұрын
@@MadRC I made a long conversation with drone-related battery warmer developers here a few years ago. The battery should be kept cooled and warmed inside an explosion protection hard case with temperature sensors on the battery placements in it. That was a big problem at that time. No product meets the high standard by now.

I might fly my DJI Fpv once a week. I check the voltage with a meter so I have 22.8V to 23.1V total with no load before putting the batteries away. Other DJI batteries I check the cells on the app with the motors shut down. It's not the best way to check them because the quad is still drawing some amps. I'd rather have traditional lipos with a balance plug.

This is a common LG Chemical MJ1 18650 cell datasheet. In the document, you will see the discharge temperature range is from -20 to 60 degrees Celsius. Just below the line, it was said that the cell will keep its life only one month under -20~60 degrees Celsius environment. As far as now, JAPAN's FDK is making NiMH cells which endure more temperature range with 1/3 of Li-ion cell voltage. Life time of high quality NiMH cells will live longer than 15 years (FDK had checked it no more than the years written on it. I have dozens of SANYO NiMH cells still working at home. SANYO was sold to PANASONIC and it became FDK under the umbrella of Fujitsu.). Lithium 2ndary battery technology is not so happy with the earth environment by now. The age of solid Lithium ceramic battery is coming with more than twice the energy density than the current Li-ion. TOYOTA. MURATA, Panasonic, Maxell , TAIO YUDEN etc are running hard for the full solid batteries now. Japanese companies occupied more than 50 percent of the full solid battery technology with patents back in 2018.

Hi, i plowed my drone into the ground at speed, only breaking 1 arm which was fixed with a liberal application of glue, but the 4 cells compacted into each other. This is evident from the new gap that can be felt at the top of the battery through the soft side covers. There is now about 1cm of space on the top cavity of the battery where the cell was previously. However, i have had around 50 flights since, with no issues noted. Is this ok to keep using? I'm having a similar issue. The battery that came with the drone works fine, but then I got the Fly More kit, charged them both using the rail and Im unable to fly with those batteries installed. The drone just blinks red with no errors. I've heard from lots of other people having this issue but I'm not sure what to do next to get them to work. Did you ever get yours figured out?

Smart batteries are what put me off investing in off the shelf drones. It’s not just the ridiculous price but the fact that once a company stop producing these proprietary batteries the drone becomes a paperweight on borrowed time. I understand that they make life easier and safer for those with limited technical knowledge but in seriousness £140 for a low C rated 6s 2000mAh with a simple BMS circuit is extortion. Bruce quite correctly coined it when he said that the DJI FPV Drone, and other drone reliant on similar batteries, are the inkjet printers of the RC world. They’re a cash cow for the manufacturer and destined to be prematurely obsolete.

It might be possible to refurbish the DJI batteries. Just replay the cells with fresh ones when they get too old to work. I'm not sure if this will work or not but I plan to try once one of my batteries go bad. The batteries are too hard to open. I've done it a couple of times. I always open the same pack since opening the pack leaves a blemish.

It depends on the winds and the speed your going at If I’m going 60 in windy conditions, the performance hit will happen at around 40% But if I’m going fast and slow and fast and slow just chilling it will hit at around 15-20%

Hi, you are showing nearly at the end a photo of an extension with another RC battery until now I couldn't find any photo or description in forums. Where is this photo from? Are there already more known battery hacks? I was trying to attach another battery to the controller and unsoldered the origin battery. First it was no Error by just pulling out the balancer cable. But as I unsolderd the + and resolderd the battery know ist just blinking with one LED and does not power the drone ... Needs to be further investigated :)
@ddegn
@ddegn 3 жыл бұрын
You can power the drone in parallel with the battery but the original battery needs to be connected. It uses a CAN bus to communicate with the battery. I haven't seen that photo before either but I've powered my drone using a bench top power supply but wiring it in parallel with the battery. I did this so I could download logs without needing to keep swapping batteries.
@EsShark2
@EsShark2 3 жыл бұрын

@ddegn
@ddegn 3 жыл бұрын
@@EsShark2 I did not fly with the benchtop power. I didn't get any warnings in the goggles though. I'll need to test more to make sure powering in parallel will work. I was mainly interested in keeping the drone powered while I downloaded its logs. I have since gone the easy route and only use the logs from the goggles. I have a Hackaday IO account where I've posted photos and other details about my experiments. I can't add a link but you can find my pages by searching for my user name. Put a period between Hackaday and IO to find the site.

@typxxilps
@typxxilps 3 жыл бұрын
that is not the right conclusion out of such experience. It it had worked then you have to be aware of the ambient temperature the battery had when you took off. If the temperature is lower then yesterday you will not get that same flight time at same speed and wind. If it gets warmer it might stay the same. Flying beyond 0% is a deadly mistake - and you might think that no one cares but do not forget that in case of any accident the police will call dji and ask for the flight data. I can tell you this cause someone had crashed his drone here on the highway last week and the police is on the hunt cause the pilot had been flying without the owners ID and it had caused a serious crash coming out of the sky and hitting a truck and crashing into the screen. the damage is roughly 100.000€ and now the police is on the hunt for all known flyers till dji will deliver their data and for sure the girl / guy will be found. Second case here. The driver survived but truck looked bad and the insurance is on the hunt too.

These smart features to be built into the battery are bullshit. These can be built into the drone and the battery could be cheaper. I fly RC helis, we alo have Battery capacity measurements, voltage, and current measurements built into the speed controller itself. So i know exactly that i discarged 2893 mah from the 5000 battery. They just want to make more money on batteries....
@ddegn
@ddegn 3 жыл бұрын
I wish the smart features where in the drone rather than each battery but having the smarts in each pack lets the battery drop the voltage for storage when needed. The logs include voltages of each cell throughout the fight. The batteries are crazy expensive but at least they come with some extra perks for the price.
