great explanation! but when you shoot in lowlight you'll benefit from full fov since the sensor noise gets less due to the downsampling.

Excellent explanation, brings the matter straight to the point. I wonder why so few other reviewers noticed how blurry the Mavic 2 Pro videos at wide angle (full FOV) mode are. Some reviewers compared footage from Mavic 2 Pro with footage from Phantom 4 Pro and just ignored how much less detail there is. Even the Mavic 2 Zoom seems to be considerably sharper. So at the end of the day, the Mavic 2 Pro makes only sense for photography, for videography its better to take the Mavic 2 Zoom.

Haven’t tested the Zoom so I can’t say for sure, but I like the look of HQ and I always shoot HQ. And the Pro also has 10-bit footage, so I wouldn’t say it’s useless for videography. It’s just that they probably wanted to make the sensor as big as possible so they had to compensate here and there. Thanks for watching! :D

Where did you get the numbers for the sensor? I couldn't find any source for the true maximum resolution the sensor could provide, only for the maximum the Mavic 2 Pro will shoot photos in (5472x3648). By the way, the 1" diagonal line is just wrong. 1" is a reference to old tube cameras, where a 1" tube would yield a similar amount of light input. This 1" sensor measures 8.8x13.2 mm, which means the diagonal is almost a centimeter short of one inch.

You forgot to mention that Full FOV mode has a terrible distortion that looks like GoPro footage. It’s very noticeable when you shoot horizon line

Yes, that’s true but I mainly wanted to focus on the sensor aspect of things. I have a video on how to properly undistort the image in Premiere and Resolve! :)

Not really 5.5k downsampling. The FOV quality is the same as 2.7k mode.

You failed to state what f-stop and focusing technique you used for the test. Both of which obviously play a key role in perceptible sharpness also!

It doesn’t matter which f/stop and focusing technique I’ve used if I’ve used the same settings and techniques for both HQ and Full FOV shots. What matters are the differences in the picture quality, all the examples were shot at a constant f/stop and with AF focused at that is digitally zoomed in! :)

@@Karlo_m There is no gaurantee AF has hit perfect focus. Only way to create a fair test is too keep everything constant via manual settings. F-stop should have been stated for proof of this.

I’ve used AF on the beginning of each shot in one mode, then turned to MF and recorded the shot in the first mode, then switched to the other mode without touching the focus and recorded a clip in the other mode. Nevertheless I provided a lot of examples and even if the focus isn’t spot on in some of the shots, the difference between shots is very visible! :)

hi. is there a chance on m2p to programme some knob on the controller to have like kind of zoom which clicks between fov and crop mode, while recording, without any interruptions, changing video profiles etc? have to dive deeper into this once, but didn't do it so far.. and other question: how do you cope with focusing in video on m2p? i found this part little bit tricky, especially with open apertures. do you use some pre-set focus and leave it there?

Hi! There’s no feature for zooming unfortunately. The way I focus is, I always use the autofocus to roughly focus on where I’m filming, and then switch to manual focus. I almost never use Continuous focus. You can also turn on Focus Peaking in the settings! :)

I’m sorry if it bothers you that much. I don’t upload in UHD, but I’m working daily with 4K media. If my points are irrelevant simply because the video isn’t UHD, I guess you should look elsewhere :)
