I can confirm that turning the Obstacle Avoidance and AirSense off does not save you any power, letting you fly further. I did a similar test to you with four batteries over four identical flights, with those features on and off and it surprisingly made no difference whatsoever. The conclusion being that those features may as well be left on all the time as there is no benefit in turning them off. The light function is not really a factor since you wouldn’t normally have the light turned on, and in Auto mode it only comes on when landing in dim light. What I did find was that the Air 2S has about 5 mins less flight time than the Mavic Air 2. Since the obstacle avoidance makes no difference to battery duration whether on or off, I can only put the reduced flight time down to two possible reasons: either because of the 25% faster flying speed in normal mode (15mph v 12mph) as faster flying drains the battery quicker; or the other possible reason is the larger 1” sensor camera of the Air 2S uses more power than the smaller camera on the Mavic Air 2. The only way I can work out which one gives the Air 2S less flight time is to run more tests, flying the Air 2S at 12mph to match the Mavic Air 2 and then see if the flight times are more similar.

Wow, the DJI Air 2S did very well! Dustin you went up to 4.2 miles and the reception was still solid, amazing! The only thing that really limit this drone is the battery at that point. Awesome review Dustin as always! 🤙🏼

This was NOT a range test, this was a battery test. To do a real range test with the Air 2s, do the following. 1. Pick a predetermined spot to land 4 or 5 miles away where you have a friend waiting with a fresh battery to replace it. 2. Take off (this automatically becomes your new return-to-home landing point) and keep going for the range test to see how far your controller can reach. 3. When you turn around, you only need to reach the 4-mile landing spot where your friend is.

Wow, nearly a 9 mile range! Your Mini 2 test showed about 4.5 miles, so nearly double! This is interesting considering they quote the cameras with similar flight times. I'm just getting into drones so I just got a Mini 2, but this sure seems like a sweet drone.

Watching this video shows just how far technology has advanced, he's recording this all with a tiny action cam, while using his phone to fly a drone, and at the same time, recording what his phone's screen sees and the drone is recording at the same time as well!

Brave move sending the drone out that far. Pretty incredible the capability. Experienced some less than ideal conditions with terrain/foliage that have slowed the video feed but OS3 is a significant improvement over OS2. I'm not so brave but cool to know the drone will get out that far. Thank you.

I’ve had my air 2 out to 7.2 miles round trip. It’s a good drone. Probably sometimes this wk I will order the air 2s combo. The battery life sucks. But during the 25 mins or so I love it.

Here in North Carolina I know of a guy who got 2.6 miles in distance while below the tree line with his Mavic Air 2. Around here it's hard to go any distance without going below the tree line while still remaining under 400 feet in altitude. We are in the Appalachian foothills here and he was flying from a flood plain, so needless to say there were plenty of trees between him and his drone. There may even have been some hills between him and his drone. This brings the point home that even in less than ideal conditions, both the Mavic Air 2 and 2S have great range. In this area, it's even difficult to decide where to put spotters as they need enough of a clearing to be able to see the drone until the next spotter can see it.

Watch his range test on the Air 2. In that one he went almost 5 miles at about 65 ft in altitude and came back with about 15% battery. It makes me feel better about not coughing up the $1000 for this one.

Yep, the thing is the occusync 3.0 could take your drone further but the battery won’t allow it. Battery is always the limitation.

Want to get the new AIR 3 coming out very soon, I hope? Was going to get the DJI mini pro 3, but I like the meat on the bones the Air 2s has. I've had a cheap bugs drone with gps but never had great range. Of course, the price tag will be expensive but this will be my ultimate drone to last me for years if I live that long. I've been a quadriplegic (spinal cord) for 40yrs(injured when I was 17} and I'm 58yrs old so I hope I can live long enough to be able to enjoy my last drone.. Great videos you put up on your channel. A mile is 5,280'. My dji phantom maxed out at about 2,600'. It was on my housing estate with trees and a signal booster. I might get me one of these.

Same here. I have a P4 Advanced and the signal in an urban environment isn't that well. I just picked up a 2s and the signal is great.

All radio transmission uses line of sight same with the GPS con which means ground position system

@@tytom5856 Technically wrong, although above around 30 MHz it's pretty much like light. VHF signals will reflect though, which means you can sometimes fly bvlos. Also, GPS is GLOBAL positioning system, stop spreading misinformation. And you only need one receiving antenna to receive the signal, not 3. The triangulation is done at the satellites, not the receiver.

My test in a noisy area it got less range than my mavic air 2. I ended up liking the air 2 better for its looks, weight, flight time and photos. I bet my air 2 would go further there because it flies longer than the air 2s. Thanks for all the test you do.

Of course the Mavic air 2 is a very dependable drone, it eliminates the butterfly’s in my stomach when it preformed it’s duty in long distance flight and returns home successfully every time. The on board computer is great and informative.I flew 8 mi. Round trip. Aloha, Dustin! I am SO GLAD you did this range test! Thank you! I was genuinely curious as to how far away I could fly my new Air 2S. This is my second drone and it's so much better than the Ruko F11 GIM2 that I first bought which would get glitchy and start to lose the signal after about 1,200 feet or so. I'm from the suburbs of Wilmington, Delaware and sometimes fly near the city so I think I can get away with a couple/few thousand feet with my Air 2S and not have to worry. It will return automatically if it loses the connection with my phone or controller, won't it?

Nice test! The signal strength outlasts the battery flight distance so can’t complain about that! Of course if you need a longer flight time you’ll need a bigger battery and hence bigger drone. I think this hits the sweet spot for an average prosumer like me. The image quality is awesome!

Had the DJI Air for a long time. Loved it. The mavics have been too expensive for me. I crashed my air two years ago, lol got too cocky and clipped a tiny tree branch and it fell down a cliff, still turns on and nothing broke but something internal is stuck/freezing. anyways, I missed have a drone, I offroad/camp/hike/fish/travel and am driving across the US alone in a couple of weeks. I needed something to record all the adventures. Drones are something else haha your phone only does so much! I went to best buy and bought this Air 2s combo lol. I am surprised with all it came with and all the positive reviews. kinda bought it blindly but i didnt want to spend another 1k on a mavic 3 lol. after watching this, im severly impressed with the camera and distance haha. I would take it maybe 2k feet out haha not 4.5 miles hahaha. Drone has literally saved my life by finding a hidden trail to lead me home. so i love all things about drones. also go team air lol. eventually ill get my Mavic Air back up lol still a good drone for practice haha. sorry for the long comment! i just get excited!! :)

I did compare your own range test with the air 2 and air 2s and I noticed that the air 2 went further at 7.9 kilometers while the air 2s went only at 6.8 kilometers. Maybe the additional weight on the Air2S is the reason for the shorter flight. Anyways Thank you for all these range test. It gives confidence to owners on how far can it go. I can only get it about 500 m until the signal drops. Guess that's what you get in a more urban setting with physical obstacles in the middle, but it's still a bit disappointing. I wonder if those antennae sold online that can be attached to the remote help at all. If anyone has experience with them, please let me know!

As someone who is always liked parrot, since they were one of the first to bring consumer drones to the market. I realize they can't touch ocusync. With that said, there are a number of methods to focus or boost any signal. If the parabolic reflectors or yagi-uda antennas don't give you the desired results, you could look into Alien Tech, but be warned they are pricey and a pain to install.

Up to last month I had a phantom 4 pro, (which was ridiculously noisy, not to mention rather dangerous due to its size), then of course found this wonderful DJI AIR 2 S, which is just amazing in every way. I love the way your Air 2s stays solid at 300 feet height in every way, and I have to say I was impressed how you let the drone take off in your hand, something I have yet to be able to do. The image quality at 4k 30fps was superb too, and I am envious that you have all this wonderful terrain to be able to explore. We have nothing like this in the United kIngdom. Well done for achieveing 4 miles, 21120 feet, before turning back at 50% battery. This makes me even more assured what an amazing drone this is, and you are very brave sending your "baby" out this far. Got my air2s combo last Friday. Haven't flown it yet either the phone I use for drones won't connect to dji fly app. My tablet does so had to order a dji tablet holder and longer cord lol at least the weather has been bad while waiting and I have inside drones lol
