I just wanted to update you and anyone else watching this. THANK YOU!!! I did the 91% alcoholic bath on my drone yesterday as suggested and let it dry overnight. Wow!! It actually worked. I just flew it for a test run and everything worked great. I had to recalibrate, but full functions. This thing sat in the top of a tree for a week and a half with heavy rain. I am so excited. Even got the snow shot that I took before the crash. The key was letting it dry out after recovery for a week. Thanks again for your video!

Very nice to hear that! Congratulations 😊👍🏻 Just be careful with the poetically damaged battery, I would not use that one anymore! Too dangerous and the risk that it explodes while charging is high. Also it could suddenly quit service in mid flight.

Rain contains no salt so no big deal...
@MattShonan3 жыл бұрын
@@matheworman6308 well that depends, corrosion wise water has always a bad effect but you are right that salt water is the worst. However conductive wise it is almost equally as bad and it depends on how quick the power source could be cut off the submerged electronics after the accident. The recovery chance is high of the power source is cut industry. Asked a few minutes being submerged with power applied to the boards, the electronics are most likely damaged.

Mavic air 2 went into the ocean very shallow maybe 3 in for 7 seconds. Pulled it out and propellers still spinning. Got it to shut off by flipping upside down and pulled battery out. That night put it in rice bath for 2 days. Took it out and tried to power it on with same battery and nothing. Tried another battery and everything turned on fine however after being on for a little bit it started smoking out of back vents. Shut it off and then an hour later turned it on and it wasn't smoking and did all the pre flight twitches on the motor and gimbal making it seem like those are fine but It won't fly though because all sorts of sensor errors. Alcohol bath or disassemble and try and clean components individually? Or some certain hardware that needs replaced?

@@MattShonan looks like esc board is fried. Ordered a new one. Cleaned corrosion with spray alcohol and brush. Think I should get it a fresh water and then alcohol bath?
@MattShonan2 жыл бұрын
@@HappyMoneyFinance Yes, that is correct and how I do it. Also JB said that this is his preferred method somewhere in his videos. Besides that, first unplugging battery as quick as possible and if submerged under water, unplugging when it is UNDER water still is the best way to avoid damage. Then washing it as soon as possible down with a lot of fresh water. After that, the alcohol bath and washing all moist and water off the board bushing water out of any place it could hide creating issues when powering up again. Point is that alcohol has 3 great functions. 1) is drying off much better than water 2) not conductive 3) has a good cleaning characteristics to get minerals and other contaminations off the boards, which will cause corrosion if not removed. It is never a guarantee but the best chance for recovery I can think of when following these steps somehow. Until now I have good results even long term after doing this recovery process.

I crashed my mini in a swampy area, and unfortunately couldn't reach it due to deep water. It was getting dark and I had to return the next morning to find it. It was not submerged, but was somewhat wet. I removed the battery and hand dried, then set in a container with rice. It turns on and gimble seems fine, connects to remote, but still says ESC ERROR and will not take off. Is the alcohol bath/replacing ESC something an average person can do? Could anything else be ruined by water?
@MattShonan4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your story! Sorry to hear you had bad luck. Well water is bad for electric and damage is likely if the power source is not disconnected immediately. The rice container method can help but more efficient would be doing the alcoholic bath. Biggest issue in your case might be that you were too quick to turn it on again. If there was rest moist left it could cause further damage. Try to not use it and let it dry out completely. At least a week I would say. Rest water can hide everywhere. If nothing works and the ESC error doesn’t go away, you could try to replace it if you are confident doing some soldering. Also I would retire the battery with the moist exposure. It is not safe to keep using that one. I could recover my Mavic but the battery I retired even it seemed fine. Good luck and have a great rest of the day 👍🏻😊

well, not really as a final solution. However if you need to wash off salt water and there is nothing better you can find it could help. Water no matter in what form is still conductive. Well, you have to make sure to disconnect the battery immediately when you get is out of the water and you have to make sure that you do not try to turn it on. Then you take it apart as much as possible, or as much you are comfortable with taking your Mavic apart. When giving it the alcoholic bath, at least around 80% alcohol but best would be going even higher.The last step would be drying it out for at least 24h. How you perform each step will determine how high you chances of recovery actually are. Well, it is important to dry out 100% out before trying to turn it on. The „try“ is destroying likely some electronics. You can try to do what I did. However, only one day letting it sit to dry is not enough time. It takes at least a week in dry air after the alcoholic bath if you like to have the best chance for recovery. But even you chance might have dropped by already trying to turn it on. You still can try to recover by going through the process. Always worth to try! Good luck 👍🏻

6 months, is it still working? No wobbly flights? Uhm, about the drone. After I flew mine, it had solid droplets form inside, like small little droplets that were hard (I think this was rest water). Any tips?I'm thinking about doing an alcoholic bath cause there seems to be a bit off rust forming. How do I open it up (which ones to remove)? Also, do I just leave it there for 15 minutes? Others said that it's better to soak and brush. If so, how long should I soak it if I brush it? Still 15 minutes?

Yes, mine is fine!! No corrosion or any other issues visible. It flys fine! Well, it gets increasingly difficult over time if the electronics were not cleaned immediately. However, I would try, there is not much to loose. I think doing a longer bath might be better letting the alcohol do its cleaning job. I personally don’t like brushing since that can damage the electronics. The body is clipped together. You will have to work your way carefully around since the plastic is quite thin. In your case you also can try to do this without dissembling, just doing a long bath over night. Then drying it out for several days. I personally would say at least a week. Just had to stop by and add my story. I have a Mavic Air 2 that unfortunately took a dive into saltwater. It was submerged for maybe a minute no more than 2 minutes. I immeditately rushed home soaked it in isopropyl alcohol completsly assembled. The next day I disassembled down to the motherboard again gave it an alcohol bath this time gently using a toothbrush to clean the boards and left it to dry for a day. Using a new battery she fired right up. I know the future risks but ordered some corrosion X HD and also gonna brush on some conformal coating. Has anyone tried this yet?

Did it work? What was the behavior once powering up? I usually let the electronic sit for about a week or 10 days after the alcohol bath.

Not to sound dumb, but is this rubbing alcohol?

Michael Meyer Just regular 77% alcohol anything will do. Best is to get the highest purest alcohol. That would enhance the chance of success.

you can get pharmaceutical grade alcohol from a pharmacy. I got one 99% 1L bottle for $12,-

Good day. Do i need to disassemble it first? If yes do you have a video tutorial for it thank you so much!
@MattShonan2 жыл бұрын
No need to disassemble if you are not comfortable with that. The shell is just clipped on. If you work around the edges carefully, it will come off. The advantage would be that you can dry it out a bit quicker after the alcohol bath. Good luck with the recovery!

@@MattShonan do i need to remove anything from the drone aside from the battery?

the more the better, it will make the cleaning process more efficient

Why did you use alcohol bath?
@MattShonan4 жыл бұрын
Alcohol is a not conducting liquid. The bath pushes out all water which is hiding between circuit boards. Also alcohol vaporizes much faster than water would. That also speeds up the drying process.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Only submerged about 1.5 mins

I sprayed my mini with spray paint on the mother board. So its water proof
@MattShonan4 жыл бұрын
that is also a good way to protect your electronics. However a dedicated water proofing spray would be even better. 👍🏻

I wouldn't recommend this as it can cause it to overheat
