Very useful info for drone starters. If I were to get one, I'd be okay with the Mini SE. Budget-wise, it's a really good deal for a decent mini drone.

Billy, thanks for the review. I watched this after i got my SE. Purpose for the drone is why i bought this one. Im a gold prospecter in Australia, i use it to look for good ground. Park the car on a track surrounded by trees. Lift off above the tree line camera pointing down. Fly around till i see good ground then bring it home.

I think the price is right in that sweet spot where beginners who just want a stable camera in the air can justify the purchase, and if the lower performance increases the life of the motors that could be a bonus to some.

It's just a cheaper version to reach more customers, Occusync is just amazing here in the UK so it's mini 2 all day long here.

I had already bought a refurbed Mini off eBay for $199, arrived a couple days ago, haven't opened it yet (and wanted to hear your review before I opened the package). Main reason for purchasing: taking drone pics and video for real estate. Another review on KZbin of the Mini options (Stewart and Alina) suggested that the Mini was adequate for real estate. The Mini was less than half the cost of a Mini 2 so I decided to start cheaper and try things out. Yeah, the Mini 2 sounds like it has some nice additional capabilities. I may not need them to take property photos and videos at close range.

I’ve got a Mavic and I have an SE coming from eBay. The Mavic was a fly more combo, which I paid 219 for the SE is not so much a combo but it has some other features to it and that I paid 244 so let’s see

I think the SE needs to have ocusync 2 to put it slap bang in the middle, at present it's more closer to the mini 1 rater than in the middle

The mini se flies much much better in the wind. I think that's the biggest difference.

Good review and good points as always. I still have the original Mini and use it for close flying like roof inspections but not on windy days and not very far away lol. I use the Air 2S for cinematic and professional grade footage. I think that DJI had a bunch of spare Mini parts and decided to put them together and as you say we have the "Frankenstein" Mini SE. The SE wasn't supposed to be sold in the US but the price made it an affordable option.

my mini se i got for christmas came with all the goodies, 3 chargeable battery packs with charger and a bag sd card all cords, spear propellers manuals and all . I think you got the cheap version? i love it! i think they done a good job building it

The Mini 2 is great but I just hate the large controller as it defeats the purpose of portability while I can just slide the others in my pocket without issue.

I don't like the connection with Mavic Mini or SE. I was flying between trees and I could see the drone it was like 300 meters away and I lost connection. Switching to Mini 2.

Concerning the Mini SE, There is a fly more combo. 3 batteries, the hub, case etc. All great Mini drones though.

It is likely the SE uses up stocks of the soon to be obsolete controller and other parts. The Mini 2 Occusync is going to control.

I think the SE had one purpose. Market share Everything was in place to produce the SE, development was paid for and it really didn't need any marketing. If you put out the most reliable drone for a very low price you get the new buyers that might go for a Fimi or Hubson. I know if I was getting my first quad I would go for the SE just for the reliability. Why take a chance on a quad that was released but not fully developed (Hubson Zino pro) or a Fimi x8 which you have a 75% chance it having issues when you can get a very dependable DJI for $300 and some change? And yes, DJI did intentionally hold back on features. If it performed like a Mini 2 even though it's capable nobody would buy the Mini 2.

So they more like release the SE to consume the stock they had from Mini1 like PCB, camera and gimbal setup with all the cables and electronics from Mini1, fitted into the new adapted Mini2 case and batteries with new motors as well. Smart move if you ask.

Maybe a parent wants to get the kids into flying but doesn't want to blow $600 in case of an accident, etc. Or maybe a college age amateur photographer thinking about getting some aerial photos but can't quite shell out for a mini2. Going to jump off topic here - Question: the camera on the Spark, is it the same that is on the mini series? There are times I feel like the photos/footage look better coming from the Spark. Mini SE is good for beginners, besides the specs are not the same as the mini 2, but it can still be considered to buy a mini SE, because dji products are always the best for releasing drone products.

I think the reason for the SE model comes down to one thing. The original is so terrible in even moderate wind that they felt the need to make an urgent fix for that terrible flaw.

Pretty sure the mini SE is about getting more people to buy one of their drones. All the big electronics stores sell drones around here. But I've only ever seen 3 drones fly around. And two of those where those professional big ass drones. One from some tourist company, and the other was the water and heating company, flying around at night, looking for leaks with thermal. The last was some elderly dude, just wushing about on a field. Drones haven't really caught on in my part of the world. So I'm guessing they need some cheaper alternatives, that's still better than those really cheap toys.

Hey dude!!! I love love love the Mini 2 for the OS2 and Smart Controller compatibility. It worked great for me in Scotland for the 2 weeks I was there too! So stealthy and capable.
