DJI Mini 2 ND Filters - How I use Drone ND Filters. This is how I do it. It's easier than you think.

So, exposing with ND filters on your drone. It's simple. IF you have ND filters for your drone, use the 180 degree rule, otherwise there is no point in having them. So, if you're on 25fps, double that for your shutter - 1/50. Use the lowest ISO you can, so start with ISO 100, during the day, if it's cloudy sunny stick on the ND16, if it's sunny ND32, if it's overcast quite badly ND8 or lower. That's basically it. This is an artistic choice (to an extent), so if you want a blown out sky, go for it, if you want to silhouette the trees with a moody sky, go for it, you're in charge! Any questions at all about this, hit me. No I don't use zebras on my drone, no I don't use the histogram on my drone, ever. I set it so it looks good to me. I hope this helps.

You mentioned in passing that the shutter speed and ISO are fixed, so it's probably worth emphasizing that the camera needs to be put into manual exposure mode to use ND filters, rather than rely on auto-exposure mode, which is the default mode in pretty much all point-n-shoot cameras - including those in drones. If the camera is auto-exposure mode then it will simply compensate for the presence of the ND filter by reducing shutter speed and/or increasing ISO (or, more rarely in drones, opening the aperture), so highlights will still be blown out. It's also worth emphasizing that if ISO is greater than 200 at the desired shutter speed with a given ND filter then use a lighter filter to get ISO down to 100 (e.g., if ISO is 200 and SS is 1/60 with an ND-8 filter then switch to an ND-4 filter to set ISO to 100).

@@PhillipSkraba So I was checking out ND's for ND/CPL's and came up with something that might interest you. I take before and after shots of my work, but the sun screws up half my shots with the glare as I apply coatings. I have no choice to take a strait on shot of their house so my angle is predetermined and the sun does not take orders. I bought a CPL for my DSLR and figured I'd get some for the Mavic too. My customers will love the aerial shot of their house as a bonus but the glare sucks. I noticed other guys were pretty much saying land the drone to get the polarization right. Waste of battery and more importantly, time. So I just got my cheap Skyreat ND/CPL's just now and started messing with them. I figured you already know the angle of your shot you plan to take of the subject/work as the altitude is irrelevant with the CPL. So what I done was use one of the other CPL's to get the angle that I figure the drone will be while leaving the CPL mounted on the gimbal to cut down on fiddling/damage as Im reckless. (Yes, I land in the snow too as its Canada). By standing at the approximate angle you want of your subject/work with the spare CPL, then find the sweet spot to set the CPL on the drone with the matching mark without ripping the mounted CPL off the flimsy gimbal. Works like a charm. Just thought if you ever do a CPL vid you might incorporate that idea. It was a bridge I was going to cross when I got to it, but solved it on the ground as long as you have 2 CPL's. Cheers. Love your vids.

If you're shooting manual, try doubling your shutter speed for a one stop decrease in exposure. It will violate the 180 deg rule and decrease the motion blur but still looks good. For example: if you've originally planned for 25fps/1/50, move the shutter to 1/100. If that's not enough, double it again. Try to keep it as a simple multiple of the frame rate.

@PhillipSkraba
@PhillipSkraba 3 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid not, I've tried a few different brands, and the only two I can honestly recommend are Freewell and PolarPro. I'd save up some money and get the 4 box kit for example, otherwise you'll spend 50% of what you would on the Freewells or more and be disappointed with the outcome. Bad glass in front of your lens will lower the quality of your image, that's why it's so important to stick good quality glass in front of your lens.

Great video buddy and just what I have been looking for. Excuse my ignorance but am I right in thinking that the higher the nd number rating the better it copes with brighter sunlight conditions ?.Also if I film in 4k 30fps do I just need to change the shutter speed to 1/60 with no need to change anything else ?. Hope that makes sense as I am a newbie 👍

So the all day package arrived today and I was able to get out and give a few a try. I was shocked to see so many CPLs, I’m a huge fan of NDs for my regular photography and rarely use a CPl. due to the brightness of the sun this afternoon, I had to use the ND/CPL32 and must have attached it wrong because there was horrible vignetting in the lower corners (not the top, which leads me to believe I didn’t have the filter set properly). I couldn’t see the vignetting while flying and realized I’d gone too aggressive when trying to get a few shots of some trees, so I landed and switched out to the ND16, those photos came out looking nice.. This was my first real photo run, two batteries was all my fingers could take (about -5C here today with wind). I am a photographer, not a video guy, so I had to get used to two totally different methodologies for shooting. For photos, I push the histogram and expose a hair bit to the right, looking for a correct exposure. The ND filter was great for the 180 rule but not so hot for photographs as I had to increase the ISO a bit to bring up the exposure. But this is all part of the learning process. I have to say, the video shots of a simple marshy field with a thicket of bare white birch trees, with a sole pine tree came out awesome. I’m still shocked. I learned that you really do need to keep the speed down for those “cinematic shots” one of my passes looked great, but felt wrong when I viewed it back home, it was too fast.
@PhillipSkraba
@PhillipSkraba 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, with the CPL filters you really have to put them on correctly otherwise vignetting is a problem. So what I advise is to stick them on, look at the phone screen and move the drone around so you see the sky, ground and check if there is no vignetting going on, especially in photo mode 4:3 as that is where it'll become apparent. So that's the best way to double check all is well before take off, it'll take a minute and save you the frustration of having to land and fix it. As for cinematic footage, yes, usually the slower the better. Slow, smooth cinematic movements. The higher you are from the ground the more speed you'll need to show any type of movement of course. I usually shoot my photos in the same shutter speed that I shoot video unless I need to freeze a subject or blur it. Yes, all part of the learning process, I'm sure you'll feel comfortable with it in no time! Any questions drop them here.

haha, watch out for those walls, bushes are okay 😂 Here in Europe it'll hit 500m, but I don't recommend flying at that height, I rarely go above 100m, it's just not a perspective I think is very cinematic.

I've watched like 3 different videos about ND filters and only yours finally clarified some things. So thank you! I'm only wondering if there's a sense of buying CPL or ND/PL? Are they really useful? I have CPL filter in my car's dashcam, and there I'd say it's just a MUST HAVE imo, because of the constant reflections on the windshield. But in the air on the drone? Hmm... I would love to hear what's your experience with these :)
@PhillipSkraba
@PhillipSkraba 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Well, I use them when flying in clear skies or over water, they get rid of some of the reflections and they pop the blue in the sky. I do need to dial them in on the ground and basically fly in a certain angle from the sun, but that's how a polariser works, on the ground of course you can quickly dial it in again. I find them useful and they make my images look great, so it's really down to you if and what kind of climate you shoot in.

Long exposures are say 1-4 second exposures, they are great to show the passing of time, so light trails or moving water. I haven't done a long exposure video yet, I'd need to find a day where the wind is almost non existent.
