Stupid, yes. Did I know, no, otherwise I wouldn’t have wasted my time, so sharing my experience of being stupid with other stupid people. An external drive for core files on the Mac Mini M4, might as well get an Asus. We buy the Mac Mini M4 because it’s tiny, most of us want to keep it that way.

It works pretty well, Ulanzi, and SmallRig make a cool version too, it's worth checking out.

I have about 50TB of external storage, video and photo, which is fine, and it's stuff I backup, use now and then, and write to every few days. I don't mind that at all. What keeps me up at night is the idea I have 40GB of free space on the main disk, what if I need to install more applications? Sure, I could add an external disk and instal to that, but then the whole point of buying this tiny piece of Apple wizardry is to keep it contained and small, hence why I sent it back and went for the 512GB version, so I can sleep better at night knowing it is self-sufficient and will not run out of space a few months down the line.

Been using them for ages, in pretty nasty weather, doesn't make a difference to me at all.

No, shame on YOU for judging me. I bought the Mini M4 with 100% faith that I'd be able to fit the applications and user data, so the core elements that it needs to tick over with 100GB+ to spare. It may have been a spontaneous decision, but I was very sure it would all fit. The fact that I did not check my disk beforehand is my stupidity, but that was due to the fact that I couldn't fathom the idea that applications and core user data could weigh 200GB. This is ONLY core data, no extra editing files, nothing. I bought this tiny little desktop computer so it would stay that way, and that's why I sent it back and bought the 512GB version, so I can sleep at night. You think making a video, which so far has made $5 in revenue, and wasting a week of my time exchanging a computer is my goal in life? I can tell you, it is not. So before you go judging people, think McFly. I speak honestly, I speak my mind and this was me warning others not to make the stupid mistake I made.

Yes! They have the full version with number pad and touch, I use the tiny one though to keep things tidy.

Yeah, I’m a user who wants all this to be in the tiny box it’s sold in, which is the point of such a small desktop. I don’t want my computer to come in different parts.

I'm not really a tech KZbinr, I do like tech, but I'm not crazy about the techy details, more the day to day details that make more sense to me. Thank You for being here on this wacky ride of mine.

I think so, the cover is pretty loose inside so they should be ok. Really easy to take on and off though.

I think people, like myself, buy Apple for the ios, the ecosystem, the simplicity. I use Apple as it’s just the best for what I do.

What is this, 2004 with a water cooled Windows desktop?! External is fine for editing files, not for basic core files the computer needs to tick over. For browsing the internet it’s amazing, for people with apps like me, 512GB is minimum.

Yes, correct. 100% to be exact. I had too much faith that the applications would definitely weigh less than 100GB, I was, as you say, clueless. Great film. Good times.

I’m a creator, and more from the creative side, less from the technical side. So I have no idea, and I’d also like the Mini M4 to be self-sufficient, without the apps or user profile on an external drive. I can keep files to edit on externals, but not what it needs to tick over.

@PhillipSkraba Here is an idea, the intrnal drive is an ssd. The more you use it, the more it deteriorates, so would you like a brick on the table or a usable system?

Well, no, not really. I have about 50TB of external disks. I had a guess of about 100GB max for applications. I was wrong. I thought the mouse would be fine, I was wrong, haven’t used one in years. I basically made a few spontaneous purchase mistakes, so I’m sharing that. It’s nice everyone is on their high horse though, as if not one of you has ever made a stupid mistake.

Exactly, I agree. I don’t want any external disks running the basic needs, they’re fine for editing files, but not for basic apps and user profile.

Yeah, but a lot of us don’t want external drives running our system, hence why I went with a larger disk.

Absolutely. Funnily enough, this was a toilet purchase. Sitting there, both my kids banging on the door, I was like, F it, it’ll be fine, “add to basket”. My spontaneous stupidity hopefully gave some insight for other toilet shoppers.

@PhillipSkraba In reality, you are not. You just put everything on a system drive, deteriorating it daily.

I think that's theory, as in actual real world use I don't see any problems with my SSD drives, and I am constantly, daily, rewriting GB's to them.

I am the kind of user who doesn't care much about the actual tech inside, but about what it can do for me, and I'd like it to do it with as little extra hassle as possible, so nvme isn't something I want hanging around. I'd rather pay the extra, have it all inside the Mini M4 and be done with it. All my editing drives are SSD drives which I connect to various Macbooks, that's fine, but I want the core to be on the main disk inside the Mini M4, that's all. I think there are a lot of people like me, who just don't want the hassle, so it's not about being smart, it's about being comfortable. For me, for my peace of mind, it's worth the money.

Absolutely, though I think I’ll sleep better knowing the Mini M4 is independent of any external drives, other than editing drives which I plug into different computers. Luckily I only play games on my Xbox, the computer is solely for editing.

There was around $400 extra, yep. I can wait the extra 30 seconds for a Final Cut render though, that's not a problem, the Mini M4 is fast enough, hell, my Air M2 is fast enough.

It’s not clickbait actually, I was around 99% positive the applications and my user profile would not take up that much space. I also have external SSD’s, BUT I want the main disk to be self-sufficient to run with nothing attached. All files for editing will be on externals, sure. So, no, not clickbait, just sharing my personal experience, maybe I was just naive that I the applications would weigh less.

It would have been easy for you to check in advance what the space requirement was for various folders on your existing Mac. Newbie mistake.

@dough.9241 not newbie, first Mac was in 91. Just silly faith that the folders would be around 100GB, never thought they’d weigh in at 200GB. My stupid mistake, yep.

@J4ckCr0w my business isn’t knowing how much my apps weigh, and believe me, back in 91 I had 256MB drive! That fit Quark Express, a load of weird programs, maybe 200 Pamela Anderson photos and some games. My business is photography and filmmaking, I unfortunately didn’t make it my business to find out how much applications take up nowadays, otherwise I’d have gone with the 512GB straight away. Yes, the prices skyrocket as soon as you start stepping up the Apple add-ons ladder. I’m hoping the 512GB 16GB Ram version will be enough for my use case scenario. Fingers crossed.

That would be perfect! Amazon oddly enough only sell the 256gb and 512gb, no idea why.

I’ve seen it running on the base model in some videos, if that can handle it, the Pro will have no problems.

@@PhillipSkraba Yeah, if it's just buying a new module, taking the old one out, and putting the new one in, maybe. But I don't think anyone would be comfortable replacing multiple NAND flash storage chips on a module.

I’m saying what my personal experience is. IF you’re browsing with Safari it’s a fantastic deal. IF you want it to run with the software I’m using then it’s too small, and I recommend the 512GB, it’s not a conspiracy 😂

Well my argument is that I want to have the Mac Mini to solely work with the apps and user profile on its own for peace of mind. External disks will be for files it doesn’t require to run with.

The video is solely designed for clicks/views to differentiate from the flood of M4 Mini vids on here. Nobody in their right mind is paying the Apple Tax for storage with their own hard earned cash when they can plug in a perfectly affordable TB4 SSD, and they’re portable too…

Yes, it was a stupid move on my part as I didn’t even check the main disk files I had beforehand, I just hoped for the best.

No, it's not. It proves I was under the impression that my application and user profile folder was much larger than I initially thought, and it was my stupidity that I didn't check before-hand. Now considering our world is getting stupider by the minute and there may be more people out there are stupid as I am, I thought I'd share my experience of being an idiot with other idiots, so they don't have to look like idiots.
