Great comparison. The only one out of those i do not personally have is the Mini 2. As far as video quality, you can definitely tell which one is the Mini on each comparison segment. The quality of the Pro 2 surpassed of them..as expected. The Air 2 is my go to all around drone. However, was very impressed of the flight and video characteristics of the Mini 2. The day was sunny and the strong lighting allowed all drones to produce good quality images, but I believe that under different conditions, in low light, the differences would arise and the 1 inch sensor would produce images better than those of drones that have sensors minors. It's a bit of a fallacy that big sensor = better low light performance. Yes larger sensors are often better quality, but if you somehow put the tiny lens from the mini 1 on the 2 pro 1 inch sensor it would perform much worse than with the proper lens (still better than the mini 1 though probably) bigger primary lens = more light

@@RoyClaessen Yes as I said the 2 Pro has a better quality sensor and a larger lens, the fact that it has a 1 inch sensor is not the only thing in play. For example a poor quality 1 inch sensor and a small or poor quality lens will yield poor low light (and other) performance. I notice you mentioned less noise in the shadows, that is more about pixel binning than sensor size. A Quad Bayer sensor is the prime example here; by taking four seperate instantaneous readings and summing them you can substantially reduce the noise from the analog amp in each pixel, without any temporal or other artefacts: see alikgriffin.com/what-is-a-quad-bayer-sensor-and-why-its-the-future-for-video-cameras/

@@jon_collins the quad Bayer sensor is what is used in the Mavic air 2 to get the artificial 48 MP photos from the 12 mp camera. Yes it does work but it's not true 48 mp. And yes it helps with noise but the air 2 cannot compete with Mavic pro with regards to noise in low light. It's an apples to pears comparison.

The Earnie voice is remarkably soothing. This is exactly the video people want to see because there are so many DJI drones now. I have used the Mini 1 and 2 Air 1s. Lowering the highlights, increasing the sharpness/contrast and upscaling to 4k makes a world of difference for the Mini 1. The sensor is the same size, you can't beat physics. Also, the higher bitrates improve smoothness with less graniness. KZbin processing mutes many of the advantages of the better drones. Throw a warming filter on the both Minis and you might not see much difference.

I own the mini2, mavic2pro and mavic2zoom. The quality of the mini2 is equal to the m2zoom. the m2pro is still the best, but with the new EASA regulation only the mini2 can fly in urban environment without permits.

colors are just more saturated and a bit more contrasty on dji mini 2, if you edit or color correct the footage you definately don't want that but if you use footage straight out of the camera without edit than it's ok

There is no difference after KZbin processing and depending on the content of your footage. Also, people tend to soften overly sharp video to make it more "cinematic."

I could really see the difference between these drones, the gap between mini 1 and mini 2 is tiny but quite noticeable and the gap between mini 2 and air 2 also is tiny but in some areas air 2 clearly handles the exposure and saturation better but BOY the difference is huge between the air 2 and the mavic 2 pro, the mavic 2 pro just has that cinematic flat picture quality with high dynamic range, perfect exposure and crystal sharp image quality and really really good colour accuracy, that drone is hella expensive but it's worth every penny. I will probably get the mini 2 next year if it's still the latest in the mini lineup coz I really appreciate having that 249g weight as drone laws are stringent in my country.

Great video! My take... Mini 1: You don't lose much at 2.7. Very nice picture for the price point. Mini 2: Overly "contrasty" but looks good at a glance. Air 2: Very clean with great balance of lighting, detail and natural colors. Pro: Has that documentary-style sharp but flat look. A bit "contrasty" like the Mini 2. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them but the original Mini's Wifi transmission protocol makes it less desirable if you fly in more urban areas.

I agree. Because Air 2 has a separate HDR mode for extra color saturation, the normal mode is really more neutral. The Minis don't have an HDR mode so their "normal" mode is a little saturated, trying to predict user tastes. It is nice for a quick shoot and share.. But if you are doing a production, with footage from different sources and you want to do your own color grading to make them all cohesive, best is Air 2

Thanks for the fair comparsion. I have a Mavic 2 pro almost for one year after having 2 years of experience with previous Mavic Pro. I did some nice shots. It has many features including a lot of sensors, incredible lens and many other good stuff but to be honest, If your intention is not making a professional production that you will be marketing on TV, Mini 2 and and Air 2 are just good enough for your amateur works. Mavic 2 pro is just real bulky for an easy "go out and shoot", expensive enough to make you cry If you lose it, crash it and so on... For the next couple of years I don't think I'll buy a new drone but If I decide to buy a new one again, I will definitely prefer DJI mini series.

I own a Mavic 2 Pro for reference. I find the Mavic Air 2 video best directly out of the camera without color grading in standard mode. It's very sharp (almost too much so) and reasonably colorful without being overdone. Mavic 2 Pro is next, the camera is the best but for whatever reason the standard profiles tend to be soft and the color isn't pleasing to me, but of course the real beauty of the drone is filming in a flat profile and then color grading it yourself, adding sharpness yourself in post etc. but many people don't want to do it. Next is the mini 2 which looks very nice to me. Very sharp, reasonable colors but a bit oversaturated. To be honest for someone who doesn't know how serious they plan on being with drones, or just want a drone to take on vacation this is THE choice, especially with occusync. Occusync is THE feature you want. The Mavic mini 1 is in last and by a mile to me. The image is dramatically softer upscaled to 4K, the colors are very unnatural and oversaturated and finally the lights are blown out and the shadows crushed. Overall? Someone who wants B-roll for vacation films and maybe to fly a drone on rare occasion? Mini 2. Someone who is serious about drones and wants more safety features, autonomous tracking, very good out of the camera images (but doesn't want to do a ton of post processing)? Air 2. Someone who is serious about drones and wants the highest quality camera image, in particular in low light but absolutely needs to do post processing to get it? Mavic 2 Pro. For me if I was buying today I would likely get an Air 2 rather than my Pro 2 as I find the post processing all the time a bit tedious (I do love the results however.) I am considering getting a Mini 2 just to truly have a "packable" drone for trips but then at that point I'm afraid whats the point of having my 2 Pro, I just don't use it enough at home!

The mini 2 has a lot of improvements, but I bought the mini 1 a few weeks ago on prime day--the fly more combo for only $400. In my opinion, the $200 (50%) price increase in my case doesn't justify itself for just 4k, occusync 2, and better wind resistance. I'm very happy with my mini 1 so far and I really couldn't afford $600 anyways lol. I also noticed that since the 1 and 2 use the same sensor, the footage looks virtually identical.

I started with the DJI Spark, then two years ago upgraded to the Mavic Air, and finally picked up the Mavic Mini last year for portability/convenience for vacations. While the increased wind resistance and Occusync of the Mini 2 are nice upgrades, I generally don't fly in windy conditions and the connection for the Mini 1 has been good enough for me. Also, 2.7k is more than enough for a hobbyist so I will stick with what I have for now. Of course, if I crash or lose a drone, I'll be looking seriously at the Mini 2 for sure.

Thanks for all the comparisons, that must have been a huge inconvenience to transfer out of 4 SD cards. I noticed the a huge difference in the first shot. #2 and #3 looked really good and #4 was really blown out and #1 was just okay; I'm sure with some post production loving the Air 2 and Mini can look amazing. Got to say KZbin doesn’t do the footage any favours, I’ve just bought a pro 2 and I am stunned by the footage when played direct onto the TV however once KZbin as gotten hold of it, it flattens the profile and loses detail. If it’s only KZbin footage you want then in truth the Mini 1 is good enough, however if it’s something more you want then get a 4k

Ok, I’m watching this in an LG OLED and the differences are pretty noticeable! I could know instantly which drone was in each case except for the last one cause it was a very hard scene with very deep shadows and I thought that the Air 2 (the first scene) was the mini 2 and then I understood it was a very difficult scene cause even the Pro 2 had troubles catching the shadows. Of course with D log the Pro 2 should he amazing but, considering the price difference I think it’s totally worth if you buy the Air 2 instead the Mini 2. I was thinking to buy the mini 2 as my first drone but now I’m going for the Air 2, thank you so much.

It's been a good 2 years but I'm looking to upgrade my OG mavic air in the near future so right now I'm wondering if the mini2 is a legit contender or just spending the extra $$$ is worth it for the air2. The vid quality seems to "get the job done" on the mini and the portability is a definite + but also the air2 seems to be best all around drone. If you go used Air2 vs new Mini2 I would go Air2 for better wind and active tracking. If you are just recreational, then the Mini2 is a nobrainer- so small and light.

I have the original Air and love it but flight time is getting worse so I'm really leaning towards the mini 2. I also take as many, if not more pictures, the one thing that has stopped me is there fact that mini 2 doesn't do HDR. Most of that can be fixed in post though so does it matter??!!! @@jaysee2213 I'm leaning towards the mini2 right now because like you mentioned, quality of photos can be manipulated in post. The thing that can't be adjusted in post is the pixel density so the depth of field in photos. although, after seeing a few youtubers results of photo quality after post production and yeilding amazing photography, I'm pretty convinced that it's more than enough to check all of my boxes. For me, (pre covid and hopefully soonish post covid) I travel a ton as my job is remote. So portability is a must. Coming from the OG air, I think the video/photo quality will get a small boost but the ocusync and battery life are the biggest upgrades as well as portability when traveling/hiking with the drone. If I was more stationary with my living/traveling situation, I'd probably opt out and get the air2.

@@natelutz1987 couldn't agree with you more. The Air and the M2 have the same sensor size and I've never been upset by stills from my Air. Took a few photos the other night with and without HDR and even through fog I managed to get pictures that were just as vibrant without it after 10 minutes in the lightroom app. "Toms tech time" has posted a review and also a few pictures and videos that are straight out of the camera that you can download and mess with (only in jpg but whatever) in all honesty the pictures that he has put up are fine without any messing in my opinion (I'm far far from a pro so I don't expect the world to be fair) just seen a review from Ian in London who I trust with his reviews and tbh, I'll be surprised if I don't order one before the night is out

I think the white balance was not setup the same on each drone. I can easily spot when the footage is coming from any of the mavic mini, however the mavic air 2 and the pro 2, I think had a green tint for some reason. Still, considering the size of Mavic mini series.. its incredible !

I found the Air 2 & 2 Pro to be the more natural looking tones, personally. Felt the minis just weren't quite warm enough.

in some videos i picked differently, so i would say any of them is good. so choosing should be based on other factors.

Thanks for this detailed comparison Aldryn! I’ve been wanting to buy a Mini for ages but really got put off the WiFi signal as here in the UK we have a lot of interference with telephone masts etc so a lot of people have reported connectivity issues Now that the Mini 2 has Occusync2.0 and 4K30 I’ll definitely be picking that up as I’m a beginner You can definitely tell that the Mavic 2 Pro and Air 2 have much better quality but your average consumer wouldn’t be able to tell

Great video! Oddly, to me, viewing on a 2 year old iPad, the sharpness and brightness of the Mini2 seemed best (pad screen small?) I’m curious about how much louder the Air 2 is vs. the Mini 2 vs. the Mini 1? The Mini 2 is only $100 more for the fly more than the Mini 1 at the moment, so no question I’d go with that... the Air 2 is also an option. The Pro is too expensive, heavy and not worth carrying... i mountain bike, road bike, hike and want some follow me capability and the less noise the better... the strike against the Mini 2 is the lack of object avoidance and lack of active track... so let me know on the noise... are any of these 2% louder or quieter or half the noise? Great videos.... seen a few in the past. Thanks!

Awesome video - thanks so much for doing this. I have a Mini and my dilemma is whether to get the 2 or get a Pro 2. I do want the 4k and, for. me, the reason to get the Pro would be to get the increased dynamic range, which you can see the benefits of in some of your shots. I've. had problems with my Mini flying off in strange directions and it's made me a bit nervous of losing it - which would be particularly devastating if it was the Pro 2!! Food for thought, but seeing the footage side by side is such a help - thank you :)

the only thing I could notice was saturation on any of the videos. only other things was the speed that they were moving at. I was guessing that the faster movers were the larger drones. I could not pick which was which on the videos until you listed them.

Good video, thanks very much for doing that. Could use your opinion when pixel peeping, what did you see. The mini 2 color looks a little hot but maybe they think that's what people want. Hopefully they adjust it a little.

Without color grading, are there settings on the Air2 that can make it look like how the Mini2 looks? For people who don’t go in and color grade, the Mini2 looked the best. But was just curious if on the Air2 you could tweak some settings and have it look similar to that of the Mini2?

Yesterday i tried Mavic 2 Pro. Whoa, super stable, so silent and fast to find GpS. And i use Phantom 4 Pro + and while it is somewhat more agile at sharp turns, it is nowhere near as silent or smooth to fly.

For me, the main reason I ditched my original Mavic Pro, then air, and went with the mini was the magical 249g. The "hassle" of having to write an exam and pay a registration fee to just have to fly a drone for fun was not worth it for me. From an image quality standpoint, unless you're making $ from your videos or are a huge pixel peeper, the quality of footage you get from all of these drones (in relatively good conditions) is simply amazing. I picked up the mini 2 mainly because of the occusync (and I've always hated the old controller). If somehow DJI is able to add a couple avoidance sensors on the mini 3...I think they'd have a perfect drone for 99% of the population.

I did expect bigger difference in video quality between mini 1 and mini 2. Now only real advantage between these two is ocusync 2.0 and raw photos.

I like the color profile of the Air 2 and Mavic 2 Pro. Mini 2 is very good though... I'm glad it doesn't have as much sharpening as the mini 1. DJI adds a lot of sharpening to the Mini 1. It looks good when you are showing off home video footage straight to TV... but not so good if you are trying to match the video up with DSLR footage or color correcting in post. That's why the mini really is good if it's for fun and the Air 2 if you are trying to push your videography skills further.

Still contemplating if I should upgrade to the Mini 2 just for the raw photos since I love my Mini 1 or I should take the leap to Air 2 but I love the quality the Pro shows in the videos. In my recent comparison video I synced my mini 2 remote to the air 2 drone. It worked. I would assume vice versa will work but have yet to try

I like the color of mini2. Straight from it no need to edit and color grade. But if you need stability and reliability of any conditions Then go for pro 2. Air 2 is if you have budget constraints but you have to learn to grade it the way you like it, tune the specs and do manual toning of its capture.

Seems like both the Mini 1 & 2 have their white balance set a lot cooler than the Air 2 and 2 Pro. I'm sure it's default setting, but as someone planning on buying one, can that be adjusted in the Mini 1 or Mini 2?

and yes, a bit of a reddish tint on both mini's compared to air and Pro. other than that they almost identical. Supprised with mini 1 - 2.7k seems not much different from 4k especially on my new 4k LG screen.

Hey Aldryn, great video as always I wanted to ask which drone you would recommend between the Mini 2 and the Air 2 for photography?? I have the Mini 1 and love it, but ive nearly lost it quite a few times due to the WiFi signal, so i want to have a backup drone i can get if i loose the Mini 1. Im tempted with the Air 2 because of the 48mp sensor, but the mini 2 having Ocusync and being a little more portable has stumped me a little bit. The weight limit doesn't bother me. I know you probably get questions like this all the time, i just wanted to ask because DJI has put me between a rock and a hard place, and i ain't complaining
