Note to future myself. Do NOT use the included STUPID screwdriver. It will strip the screw heads and U will be in bad situation. Buy a PH00 screwdriver and don't cheap out on it. The screws are glued from factory so a few seconds with a soldering iron on top of the screw heads helps too.

The very first accessory I got was a lanyard for the controller, when I was doing some on my first flights from on a bridge and realized I was resting my forearms on the railing with the controller held out over the water. 😄It's been super useful though just as a way to free up both hands temporarily. I did just get some ND+CPL filters in the other day, but I know they're not a magic bullet and am looking forward to learning how to use them for better cinematic shots.

Thanks for one specific tip. I first saw it on one of your other videos, but not on anyone else's reviews. Hand Catching. I'm fairly new to drones and was wondering how I can launch/retrieve from my 15ft rigid inflatable boat. Nobody else explained how the motors shut down when the drone is flipped upside down. I definitely will be practicing on land before taking it out on the boat. Thanks again!

I have the StartRC prop strap with "anti-trip installation" as well. My one concern and I may just be paranoid but the first night i put it on and took my mini out in the morning, I swear the props were "not quite the same" sounded off and as I applied and removed the strap I noted it was tight and possibly gripping and distorting the blades? Either way I've not used it since. As for a temporary use item it appears fine, but I'm hesitant on long term or warm/hot storage situations myself

On the bike mount, could you flip the part that mounts to the remote around so that the curved piece is going the other way? From looking at your videos, it looks like that might shift the center of gravity an inch or two forward, which might make it more stable on a bumpy road.

I am looking for a carrying case/harness to strap the RC unit and a few batteries on to my waist or back so that I can run hands free with the drone tracking me. I don’t like backpacks to store the RC unit for running. I don’t like to carry the RC in my hand while running. @@KeithFolske ND filters are good for Videos and if when properly used (as said in the video) When shooting pictures we loose details so better not to use (they are exceptions of course). The importance is planning and knowledge in Video and Photography principle before getting there. Hence ND filters is certainly not the first thing to add in the setup.
@pdbruce
@pdbruce Жыл бұрын
@@GordonChaffin ND filters are light blockers. They allow slower shutter speeds in brighter conditions. There are times you want a slower shutter for a still photo. Blurring the water of a waterfall or a stream you need a longer shutter speed to show that effect. If what you’re photographing is still or not meant to show blur you do not need a filter. With video, if you’re close to objects while moving it’s more cinematic to show some blur in those objects. To do that, you want a shutter speed about double your frame rate. So, if shooting at 30FPS you want a 1/60 shutter. On bright days, the only way to use that setting without overexposure is an ND filter so you can block the excess light that wants to enter the camera. If you are flying higher, the blur effect becomes lost and so the ND is not necessary. In the end, it’s a tool that once you learn to use it is helpful but not needed for general use.

I disagree with the landing pad. This is good for take off because the drone kicks up a lot of dust, foliage, moisture, etc. It largely keeps these things away from the drone elements where they can get inside and cause wear. The same goes for landing, though I see that the hand catch is a good method I will try out.

Thanks for the tips. I DID buy a set of not-too-expensive ND filters with a polarizer since I'm accustomed to using them in my normal still photography. What I have discovered is not that they are useless but that DJI's attachment method is not foolproof. Yesterday I was out in my driveway doing a time-to-climb test and was going to shoot a 360 panorama while I was at 400' and since it was a very bright day I stuck an ND32 on. I discovered today that there was an empty spot in the filter case so I went to remove it from the drone and store it and it wasn't there either. Rummaged in my backpack and it was not to be found. Oh well, it's only money. Weirdly this afternoon I was outside and on the sidewalk I spied a tiny rectangular black thing. Somehow the filter had gotten dislodged and fell on the sidewalk rather than in the grass. This was perhaps 20 feet from the takeoff/landing site and all I had done was a straight-up and straight-down so it had to have fluttered down with a breeze. Double-checking filter attachment from now on!

Hello, today an unpleasant thing happened to me. The drone lost its signal, or rather the controller, while taking pictures. The drone is great, it started the return at the given flight level according to the settings, unfortunately the controller did not even report this, on the contrary, it disconnected, lost the signal and could not restore the connection even when returning. Nothing responded and so I witnessed the drone landing uncontrolled. When I was looking for the problem, many people wrote to me that it happens during photography, mainly at 48 Mpx.

I was going to buy a prop holder thingy but then I just started using a face mask ear strap instead. it doesn't move and is easy to stretch over the drone to hold the props in place. Your tips on hand catching couldn't be more wrong too - Turning the drone over places undue stress on the motors whereas had catching can easily be done by simply holding your hand out so the sensor thinks the ground is there and just initiate the landing process and as it falls you catch it.

Thanks for the tips but your hand catching techniques need some work. You CAN indeed hand land by simply holding down the the left stick - no need to grab and flip. What you do is position your hand directly under it and keep holding down the left stick. The drone will see your hand but after a moment or two it will assume your hand is the ground and come down on top of it (hold your landing hand still for best results). Once it hits your hand it will disarm the props and you're good to go. Again, no need to flip so this method is much safer. This works for pretty much all DJI drones so I'm pretty surprised that you don't know this.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker Жыл бұрын
That’s all true, but I’d argue (pretty strongly), that method is actually far less safe. I’m any sort of windy conditions, moving platform conditions (boat), etc - it requires you to hold your hand out and wait as the drone slowly comes down, often bouncing around due to wind/seas, increasing chance it’ll hit you or your face. Whereas this method is basically foolproof. And given the most likely scenario for using a hand catch is more difficult environmental scenarios, it just seems silly to increase risk.
@thelocke1084
@thelocke1084 Жыл бұрын
@@thomza I think it's funny that you believe just because you're going in to grab the drone, all the wind in the world will just magically stop and there will be no impact. What happens when the drone is whipping around in the wind and you reach up for it and miss, and you accidentally grab the props that are spinning at 8k rpm? with my method you're watching the drone come straight down and can immmediately back off if the wind starts whipping it around. Better safe than sorry, unless you don't value your fingers.
@thelocke1084
@thelocke1084 Жыл бұрын
@@Dcrainmaker See my comment above to Tom S about wind. Both techniques will be negatively impacted by wind so it might be a moot point. However, in calm wind conditions which I would argue (strongly) is the majority of the time, the grab and flip method is unecessary and reckless. When you flip the drone you're introducing a risk of dropping it and esentially throwing the drone to the ground. With something like the Mini 3 it's less likely, but people do fly bigger and heavy drones (think Air 2S, Mavic 3, etc.). Why do this? why introduce an uncessary risk when you can just land it on your hand and maintain much more control. The grab-and-flip is more "show-offy" than it is practical and very bad advice to give to new pilots.
