DJI Mini 3 - Five Reasons To Love This Drone

A few years back, I had qualms about stepping down in size from the Phantoms I'd been flying. I bought the original Mini with the fly more combo and was impressed with all the feature DJI could put into such a small package. The camera and range were a bit less than what I'd been used to, but so was the price. Bought the Mint 3 last month and it appears to be the most capable drone I've ever owned. It far exceeds what I need in a drone today, and the price was affordable. DJI has a winner here.

Stephen, I totally agree and was blown away with the original Mavic Mini and still fly that one occasionally as well. The "Sub 250g" category has exploded ever since and DJI still leads the pack with the variety of drones they offer with these smaller air-frames. The Mini 3 in particular provides all the features you'll need for a price that's easy to handle.

Great take on the Mini 3 Rick; only thing you didn't mention was the fact that the Mini 3 doesn't have obstacle avoidance which I think is important to new Drone flyers !

But it doesn't have side sensors which are, in fact, the most important for safety reasons so it's not a big deal

Obstacle avoidance sensors are overrated. If you are going to be a pro doing risky shots then yes they are needed. My first drone that was not a toy was the original DJI mini and I used it for drone photography out in the open. As a beginner I did not go around doing risky manouvers such as flying in a forest. Furthermore obstacle avoidance doesn’t even work in sport mode.

Great video, Rick!! I took the plunge and purchased the Mini 3 with DJI RC (controller with screen). 😊 I still have my Mini 2. Do you think that DJI will make the DJI RC (controller with screen) compatible with the Mini 2? It would be relatively straight forward for DJI to do this, as they already made the DJI RC work with Mini 3 with “Ocusync 2”.

I personally don't think they will bc it's all about money, they want to you to have to buy the 3.

@@KateKosmo agree with you on revenue. That being said, I have the Mini 3 and would consider buying another DJI RC controller with screen for the Mini 2. There would be a number of folks with Mini 2’s that would buy the controller with screen.

@@kennethaiori I know they would too, but they want you to spend that extra hundreds of $ instead vs the lower amount for the controller & they know people would kick out the money to do that. Now if it was an American company they probably would offer the controller to be compatible.

With that prioritary function with the connection. If signal is completely lost from the drone to the controller, will it fly back home or not?

Yes. I've lost connection on a few occasions due to obstacle obstruction and or noisy wifi areas with my Mavic Mini 1, the original mini and it never failed to return to home. Same thing with my Phantom 4 pro. It has the older Light Bridge technology. I flew it out quite a distance and suddenly lost all connection. I looked up, lost sight of it, nothing on my screen as to where it was, I mean dead in the water lost. Panic set in. I tried to initiate return to home, manipulate the sticks, nothing worked. No connection. Pucker factor...10! About a minute or so later I could hear it and low and behold I caught sight of it heading home. Signal returned, video feed came up and all was good once again.

Kate, if the signal is lost the drone will instigate a RTH procedure and immediately elevate to the height you have set in the application, turn towards the homepoint, fly back and land pretty much where it took off. This will also happen if you fly the battery too low or have any other issues with internal systems like the IMU or compass. It's really a very safe drone and a ton of fun to fly. I believe just the mini 3 pro is compatible with the RC pro not the base mini 3.

Kate, I've never really tested it but had had a DJI Action 2 camera attached to the top of it and it flew fine. If you needed to carry more weight you might have to move up to the Air or Air 2.

The pro is for new flyers imo, people have it ass backwards when it comes to the two mini 3 drones. Obstical avoidance, the little follow mode and the other automated flights are all for the newbies that need help flying 😂. The mini 3 base is for expert experienced flyers 🤙😉

It doesn't have video+audio even with the RC controller. They need to fix that, as there are tons of reasons to have audio capabilities.
