I watched carefully, it may be that the lower sensors are picking up the wake and it is in bypass, Matthew Brennan describes this issue. I have experienced similar things on land, albeit small islands and shallows in active track- with settings on brake, it goes wonky and starts flying all over but still tracking me- no obstructions, just the water.

Agreed. I couldn't tell, but did you move the drone in closer and lower at about 0:45 into the video? If so, can you confirm you have APAS enabled with bypass? I suspect it is hitting too low/close to the water and periodically trying to navigate around the wake when it gets low like this. If you did NOT move it down lower and closer, I have no idea what made it do that...

@@jeffmcclain I struggled from start to have the drone fly as low as at the end, but it promted "too low" time after time. That's why I had to start som high. Yes, I lowered it and closed in gradually. No, I am pretty sure APAS wasn't set.

I also had some strange behavior when using tracking as well and that was similar as this, sort of. It was ok for a long time, then the drone began to go to the side and fly thru some trees and stopped. I've been in contact with DJI support, sent them videos and logs and they are working on a fix if I understand them correct. Take contact with DJI support and provide them with the info they ask for.

I would say the tracking is not the best feature of this drone. Fails often. Maybe they could improve the software soon

Ya, the algorithm has it's own ideas of how it chooses to track, I've had it go metres from me even though i was completely visible. Glad you were able to bring it back to you!

I believe it’s due to the water under it and the distance between you and it when slowing down and speeding up. If you stayed at a steady pace I don’t think you would have had the same issue. Also, sideways flying is only a setting that stops the controller itself from being able to move the drone sideways. It doesn’t stop the drone itself from doing it in any tracking or automated flying. Nice video, thanks for sharing!!!

I'm not familiar with it all, but I was going to say it looked like it was trying to circle you at the same time as tracking you, but you were going too fast for it. Someone else has said about it combining moves. That would explain it possibly?

You probably have active track on parallel looks like it to me reason why when it catches up it tries to parallel track!

Also get yourself some nd filters to get motion blur as your video is very jumpy and the filters will make the videos more smooth like your eye's do naturally 😉

@@bryanbell7144 I have a complete selection of ND/PL Hybrid filters from Freewell. It was optimized at 60 fps when launching the boat in the shadows, but I ended up at 240 fps on open water. (This particular video is part of another small fishing video also on my KZbin.)

Excellent video! I think you've highlighted just how precarious these AI modes are, they're not perfect by any means and the technology is still quite crude. So don't depend on them to be 100% safe and work as you would expect. I've added your channel, hopefully you'll connect with another Mini drone pilot? Edit- maybe it was behaving how it's supposed to, doing sideways cinematic sweeps? Is there a setting for that?

Same happened on my mini 2, turns out it lost gps signal and it couldn't keep a lock on its location hence why the swaying. At least that's what I assume it must've been

Good call, I believe people have too much faith in these ai modes and they aren't perfect in every situation it has to perform under... good for short little segments only, long runs usually ends in disasters

I don't like when th Dji Fly app has become sort of overloaded, just because it will be able to use with several other Dji drones. I think it should be separated. You can only use one drone at the time anyway.

The tracking sw is running on the drone. The app is not used for tracking. The problem started When the drone was moved close to the water and close to the boat. This suggest that the drone saw the wakes from the boat as obstacles and tried to avoid them. The drone was actually behaving correctly. Avoid flying at very low altitude over water especially if there are waives. It’s also dangerous to fly low over reflecting surfaces for example calm water
