There are some differences between the lithium Ion (LIon) battery and the lithium polymer (LiPo) battery. One battery rating is Watt Density. Essentially how much power you can get from a certain volume of battery. LIon's have a slightly higher watt density compared to the Lipo's. Your test showed that. You got just slightly longer flight time with the standard pack. The advantage to the LiPo is that it is more rugged and can take more abuse. LIon batteries do best in devices like laptops, tablets and computers. These devices have enough smarts built into them to monitor the battery and to shut down before the battery pack is damaged. If you run a LIon battery flat, it is an odds-on bet that it is destroyed. LiPo batteries can often be brought back to life by charging them. Lipo's also tend to be a bit safer, but either battery chemistry can catch fire during charging or if it is short circuited. Always keep an eye on your batteries when they are charging! Houses have been burned to the ground from fires that lithium batteries started.
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
I didn’t know anything about the differences in lithium batteries until I got this one in the mail. We had a computer battery that was swollen and caused a bunch of problems with our laptop. We ordered a new one and I was shocked at the difference in size of the new vs the old. We were fortunate not to be one of those house fire stats for sure.
@FredHarvey-wp2qy11 ай бұрын
@@WeretheRobertsOnce a lithium battery starts to swell, it needs to be disposed of! Its capacity is reduced and the chances of it causing a fire are much increased. A quick and cheap safety for charging your drone batteries is a terra cotta flower pot. Put the batteries in it while they are charging. The pot can handle the heat from a fire and won't set the table it's sitting on ablaze. You might get some smoke damage but that is all.
@conorstewart221410 ай бұрын
From everything I have seen most of what you said is actually reversed except for li-ion cells having a higher energy density which is easy to see here since the capacity is similar but the lipo batteries are heavier. I wouldn't say that lipos are more rugged (they tend to be less rugged, they definitely are easier to puncture or dent), lipos are pouch cells and the walls are pretty thin whereas li-ion cells tend to have a metal casing that is generally cylindrical. Also li-ion batteries can be discharged lower, most are rated to 2.5 V although you should keep above 3 V whereas the safe minimum for lipos is 3 V and you shouldn't take them much lower than 3.5 V in normal use. Lipos aren't really safe to bring back to life either, if you overdischarge them then you need to slowly charge them to bring them back but still it increases internal resistance (which means lower max current and more heat generated in normal use) and decreases capacity and can make them puff or swell, for the most part it isn't worth even trying to bring lipos back and if you do you should treat it carefully, like not pushing it hard, a lot of people when they recharge overdischarged lipos tend to keep them for slow flights or use them just as a portable way to charge other batteries. Lipos also have a lower cycle life than li-ion meaning they don't last for as many charge cycles. Li-ion tends to have higher internal resistance and lower current ratings but in a long range or high endurance drone that isn't an issue and you want the higher energy density of li-ion. This is why freestyle or racing drones use lipos but long range or endurance drones (like DJI) use li-ion. Also you can get protected li-ion cells with built in protection but you don't get protected lipos although you should never rely on a li-ions protection (it is meant for if anything goes wrong and is hence set to the limits of the battery, so usually 2.5 V for the overdischarge protection) and you should add you own protection too but it does mean you have an extra layer of protection. The reason li-ion was used in laptops is for the higher energy density, although laptops and phones now tend to use lipos because it is easier to fit a pouch cell in than a cylinder since it can be thinner.

Thanks for that Kevin. It good to have a lower priced battery because DJI batteries do wear out. I had the clip break on one and found out there is a 1-year warranty on it. So, if the actual flight times are about a minute's difference, and if there is a minute longer in the estimated that seems to mean their flight times could actually be pert near the same. The KZbin algorithm popped this one up on my homepage and I watched it. I also took a look at the demonstrated product at the link provided. Two things come to mind: 1. The Powerextra Pro battery was actually $20 dollars more expensive than the DJI intelligent flight battery both as currently advertised on Amazon. You mentioned $25 less in the video and I could not find that. 2. With everything else the same, the Powerextra Pro is not a DJI "intelligent compatible" battery for whatever that entails Why would we want to spend more money for an aftermarket battery that provides essentially the same level of performance but is not "intelligent compatible" with the manufacturer's specs? And lastly, what's up with the title on this video "DJI Mini 4 Pro Hidden Accessory / Is It Really an Accessory Though?" The title attracted my attention so that worked but the video content did not seem to relate to the title....at all. Is this your normal mode of operation or did you have some sort of brain fart by mismatching selected video with selected title?
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
Im glad the algorithm popped this up on your homepage. I don’t think anyone can figure out how that thing works. Seems random to me but I’m not a KZbin expert. Lol. I appreciate your insights here for sure so I’ll try to address them the best I can. The price differences I was referring to were between the powerextra pro plus battery and the DJI Mini 4 pro plus battery. The Amazon listing for powerextra pro showed $71 and DJI has their battery listed for $95. The Amazon sale may no longer be in play but also, I learned through another comment that $71 sale price is only for prime account members. The regular price is $85 which is still $10less expensive than DJI. But your point about buying an aftermarket Margery that’s not “intelligent compatible” is spot on. I still have some testing to do on this battery for sure. Ok now let’s tackle the thumbnail or title. I like the brain fart possibility lol. Actually, I was told I’d probably get some negative feedback on the title here. I was referring to the battery as the hidden accessory and the reason it was hidden was because it was behind the word “or” on the thumbnail. Some may say it’s not an accessory so I figured I’d ask if it was really an accessory. Ok, I admit… It was more creative in my mind than on paper I reckon. Lol.

@@WeretheRoberts I went back and looked again and you are of course correct, the DJI Intelligent Flight Battery Plus is indeed listed for $95. I was honestly expecting the battery to die as soon as I launched and then the drone would land in the pond. I wasn’t sure if the battery would cause a crash or if it would safely allow the drone to fly around. I called it an accessory and sent the original thumbnail to a buddy to give me yay or nay. He said some people may not look at a battery as an accessory hence the “is it really an accessory though” part. Regarding the “hidden” part, the battery was hidden under the word “or” in the thumbnail. Lol. It made sense to me when I made the thumbnail and title but there’s a few of you who have me questioning my intelligence now. Hahaha. You gotta remember I’m not the most creative person. Lol.

So does this battery cause the Mini 4 Pro to send RID, or is that just caused by the DJI + battery?
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
Dave, that’s a great question and I’m going to look into this. I use iPhones so I don’t really have a way to check this out, but I bet I know someone who has an android. Expect an answer in the near future. Lol.

So with that battery have you gone over the 250g limit ?
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
Hey man! Yea this plus battery puts the drone over the 250 gram limit. I seriously had no idea I ordered the wrong fly more pack either so I have 3 DJI plus batteries. Lol. At least that mistake worked out so we could compare plus batteries right?

Li-po does not have the high energy output Li-ion does, BUT it also doesn't have the voltage cliff face to deal with at 3.30 volts like Li-ion. I'm willing to bet you can fly it longer, lower voltage, and not drop from the sky or doing damage to the battery. I can usually get down to 16% and have to land with my Plus batteries, Li-po should do 9%? In theory.
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
Oh wow that’s cool. I didn’t know that. As you can tell, I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to this tech stuff. I’m just glad someone else has the smarts so it’s possible for me to play with drones! Haha. Quick question though. Will the flight time increase or decrease with added flights and recharging cycles? I guess I’m referring to a break in period. See? I don’t even know what question I’m asking. Hahaha

@@WeretheRoberts Li-po tends to lose time as you cycle, but maybe(?) 2 seconds every 10 cycles? (200/10)*2=40 seconds a "lifetime". I have limited personal experience but have a ground racer friend who tells me things. LOL

A Lithium-Polymer (LiPo) battery is in fact a lithium-ion battery. The more correct name for it would be 'lithium-ion polymer' battery. The significance here is that the electrolyte exists within in the from of a polymer gel instead of a liquid. The group of battery (often referred to as the 'battery chemistry') is 'Lithium-ion' with LiPo being one of many subtypes.😊 Cheers!

Swapping a Mini 3 battery into a Mini 4 Pro, a window pops up noticing that the drone is over the 249 gr weight.
@WeretheRobertsАй бұрын
Oh that’s cool. I don’t have a mini 3 pro but the batteries we use with our 4 pro are all the plus batteries. I’ve never seen the pop up for the plus batteries come up but it does show that the remote ID is working when they’re in it. Also, unfortunately regarding these aftermarket batteries, DJI has disabled them so we can’t use them anymore. lol. Shocker, eh? A message pops up that says, “Non DJI battery” and it can’t even take off

Question: is the PowerExtraPro a Plus? So do the make a non Plus Extra Pro? Is it a Pro Minus? Is it Smart? Does itvauto discharge? I have (many) questions. It was 63 seconds less airtime . So about 3% less, on it's first discharge. Puts them VERY CLOSE. If its a LOT cheaper, I might buy a couple as extras. I have 4 plus and 1 standard already.

Lol so many questions! John, do you really think I know any of the answers? Haha. I’ll give it a shot. Yes, this was a plus battery and I was able to compare a DJI plus battery to the Powerextra plus battery so that was cool. I haven’t seen anything listed in their stuff for a regular battery, but that’s not to say it doesn’t exist. As far as the smart feature, I saw a comment where someone mentioned it was not smart and didn’t have the auto discharge function. Also them recommending to not use it for updates is another indication it’s not a smart battery. I saw on DJI website their plus batteries are listed for $95 and this one was on Amazon for $71. I’d say it’s a pretty good deal. I was skeptical at first, hence the title. I was betting as soon as I launched and got over the pond the battery would die and the drone would go in the drink. Lol. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for watching as always, John. God bless!

Kevin, interesting battery comparison. Which battery is better, Li-On or LiPo? Both lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries are suitable for robust and high-power use. Nevertheless, lithium-ion batteries are more effective and prevalent than lithium-polymer batteries. This is because they possess higher power levels making them fitting for massive usage. However, lithium-polymer batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries due to their robust packaging.

I did a little bit of research on the differences and all I could find was one was liquid and one was gel based. Lol. I may not know much about this stuff but I’m glad someone does. Otherwise I wouldn’t be playing with drones. Haha

Dang I was afraid of that happening. Several months ago, DJI decided to restrict aftermarket batteries with certain drones like the Mini 4 pro and this battery no longer works with my drone. I’ve tried it with each update since and it still doesn’t work. I contacted the company and gave them a heads up and they were supposed to get back with me with a possible resolution. I guess this was their solution. lol.

You likely do not realize this, but you're forgetting the name of the manufacturer of the battery and have to go and get it and then say the name of the manufacturer, including saying it incorrectly and then correctly, that actually will cause people to remember the manufacturer much more. Be careful, Dwight has pushed into 107 weight territory, and the FAA is going after youtubers left and right. Even if it wasnt overweight, your channel is still monetized which, regardless of weight, requires 107 certification.
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the heads up, Matt. It’s always cool to have people looking out for you, eh? There have been a few comments letting me know different things about the 107 requirements and we definitely appreciate it. Our channel isn’t monetized and although Dwight is over the 250 gram limit, my understanding is we are still good to go. Our channel is for recreational purposes only. I have the drone registered with the FAA as required due to the weight and he emits the RID when flying with the heavy batteries so we’re compliant with that. We do have a call in to an FAA rep trying to get further info about KZbin because of the reviews and possibility of “promoting a business” aspect of things. So far the rep told us we seem to be all good but he’s going to do some more research to give us a complete answer soon. I’ll keep you guys all updated on what they say. You’re 100% right though. We could avoid all this stuff if I’d just get that license. Lol. Thanks for watching, brother and again for the advice. God bless!
@Matt_McFaul11 ай бұрын
@@WeretheRoberts actually, being over 249grams puts you in 107 regardless of commercial or recreational intent. The weight aspect is there because if the damage that the kinetic energy of drone impacts at that weight, can cause.
@WeretheRoberts11 ай бұрын
I guess it may depending on your location. In the US the only requirements if your drone weighs more than 250 grams is to register it with the FAA and put your assigned registration number on the outside of the drone for identification purposes. If your drone weighs more than 55 pounds though you’re in a whole different level and I don’t know the requirements for that. That’ll probably require more than a 107.
@Poophead111 ай бұрын
@@Matt_McFaul This is inaccurate. The weight of the drone has no bearing on Part 107 vs flying under the recreational exemption. A person flying a full size Mavic can do so, as long as the intent of the flight is for "recreational" purposes. The registration requirements are based off the weight for recreational pilots. Any drone used for commercial purposes however will require registration & compliance with Remote id.
@Matt_McFaul11 ай бұрын
@@Poophead1 negative, anything over 250 grams now requires a Remote Pilots Certification. Look it up, this question is in the exam. But intent outweighs actual weight, in the event that your intent is to make money with your UAS. Even still, anything under 250 grams still must be registered, and the operator must have a certificate indicating that he has passed the Trust exam.
