I bought my ZV1ii a few months ago and can’t return it 😭. I actually really did like that camera too, but now it’s permanently mounted as my top down camera and never seeing daylight again 😂, the Pocket 3 is easily the better choice. Who do you think would be able to come out with something to compete with DJI? I think Insta360 has the best shot since they already have gimbal tech and know how to develop good software.

Before I went out to do the testing, I honestly thought that the A7SIII would crush it, but the Pocket 3 proved me wrong lol. My favorite comparison is with the slomo, the Pocket is just so smooth. Glad the video helped you out 🍻

It’s funny because I filmed the intro before I did any of the comparison test and I was absolutely surprised how well the Pocket 3 did. Definitely an improvement over the 1 & 2, but I’m most excited about the tracking in the Pocket 3. The Pocket 2 was almost unusable and they never updated it. The Pocket 1 even had better tracking than the 2, but it had that tighter focal length. DJI nailed it with the Pocket 3.

Thinking about getting the OP3 to shoot automotive B roll like rollers and bringing with me to car meets. Would you recommend getting it or getting a gimbal for my A6400? Mainly just want something fast and easy

Tough one. I haven’t used the A6400, but I used to own the 6500 and 6600. I think you can do more with those cameras especially if you have the lenses. If I had to choose, I’d rather shoot stuff like that with the A6400 and a gimbal. The Pocket is great for what it is, but I think you might feel limited with the 20mm lens on it. BUT, if you just want something that’s quick to pull out and start filming, it’s hard to beat the Pocket.

Everything you see was straight out of camera with no editing of the image or sound, EXCEPT for the LOG footage. I converted those images to Rec709 and then adjusted the highlights and shadows a little bit to pull the details out. Let me know if you have any other questions 🍻

I didn’t use the low light mode on the Pocket 3 in the night shots, just the regular video mode with everything on auto. And in the LOG test, DLogM isn’t available in low light mode. I was pretty impressed how well the Pocket did at night.

Most of the video was shot in auto with default settings straight out of the box. For the LOG footage, I set my shutter speed to 1/50 and max ISO of 1600 to reduce noise. Color corrected using the LUTs direct from DJI.

@@Razorcrew_Cole haha, no worries, we all have been there. I’m not that great at color correcting myself. In short it’s adjusting the shadows (dark areas) and highlights (light areas) to make the washed out look of the LOG footage look normal. You want to shoot in log because it keeps more details in those light and dark areas, but it has to be corrected in editing. LUTS are just a quick way to adjust all that without needing to do much work. You don’t need LUTS, but they’ll save you a lot of time.

Welp, I hate to be the bearer of bad news… but from the footage you just shared there’s nothing between the two. Add a touch of softness in post to the OP3 footage and it will be indistinguishable from the Sony footage. Of course you can add fast lenses to the Sony for super blurred out backgrounds; but other than that they look about equal. And I watched this on a 90” screen. Even dynamic ranged looked little different. However, the audio from the pocket was way better than the Sony. This is good news. These advancements will save us tons of money.

I’ve gotten a lot of suggestions to drop the sharpening in the Pocket 3 (lowest to -2) and it looks really good. Yeah, DJI made something amazing with this camera, especially at that price too.

Good question, it's essential to know these things. The Pocket 3 on that last clip was less noisy but I suspect that's due to internal noise reduction that wasn't applied in post for the Sony. A better test would be to have as many identical settings as possible.

Everything is shot at 4K/24p, in the very last clip, the Pocket is at SS 1/50, ISO 1600, AWB. The A7SIII at SS 1/50, f2.8, ISO 3200, AWB. I’ll try to upload all the footage over the weekend so people can download it and mess with it.

As soon as apple and Samsung comes with a good 1 inch sensor in their phones compact cameras is dead. I see the banding and high noise reduction but still pretty good detail on dji.

How do you record the dog running using pocket 3? Are you using underslung mode?

My camera setup is exactly like the thumbnail. So the Pocket 3 is kind of in an underslung/“flashlight” mode. I was bent over some, so it was parallel with the ground to get the low shot of my dog. I’m not exactly sure how to explain it. But exactly how it is in the thumbnail, or in the beginning where I’m showing the camera setup.

What a fantastic comparison, thank you! I have to say, the Sony does have a really nice look in a lot of the clips, but not all of them. In some of them the Pocket 3 actually looks a lot nicer.. However, overall I think the Pocket 3 is the clear winner, as it ticks so many other boxes, and the look is perfectly fine. I don't know what your sharpness and noise settings are on the Pocket 3, but I like to have the sharpness all the way down and the noise reduction at -1, this helps to de-digitize the image somewhat. The Pocket 3 really is an insanely good camera, and when you factor in all of the additional gear required to make a typical full frame camera deliver the same stability, audio capabilities and low light performance... It's kind of a no brainer to me! Full frame cameras will always have their place in the world. But I think that "place" is quickly getting smaller and more specialised. There simply is no need for anything that bulky for your typical vlog / solo film maker gig, when the Pocket 3 can perform this well!

Hey! Thanks for the tip on Pocket. For these shots sharpness and noise reduction were both set at zero, but I have been turning them down some in my personal usage especially the sharpness, but just to -2. I’ll have to give your settings a try. And yes, the A7SIII definitely has its place. They filmed The Creator entirely on the FX3! But you’re right, for normal consumers, the Pocket 3 should easily be the one to pick up. It does so much and for a fraction of the price. I’m excited to see what other innovations will be coming up in the camera world.

It was in normal. Everything was in auto, but I normally avoid using low light modes in cameras because I like to tweak everything myself in post editing. It is still great to have though for everyone not crazy about editing like me lol

Won't it be better to have an option to adjust the sharpness of the footage in the iPhone instead the need to film with such huge file size just to able to get lower sharpness footage? It can already change the picture style to be warmer or cooler right, hence its good enough, do third party app like Black Magic and Filmic Pro can change the sharpness directly? Do these apps record raw signal or only able to access processed data like how some apps on Android didn't get optimised to get the raw signal but direct screen capture like the Instagram app?

It’s only when shooting Pro Res Log on the iPhone 15 will get you get pretty much the same or close to the image quality of the Osmo Pocket 3. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and the image quality is not as good. You only get true log with the 15. There are no controls for sharpness IIRC in Flimic Pro or the BMD app. The OP3 is a MUCH better shooting experience though than an IPhone - so good that I bought a second OP3 within 24 hours of getting my first one!

Yes, I think the 15 is the only iPhone with log. I haven’t used Filmic Pro, but I don’t think there’s a way to adjust the sharpness in Blackmagic (I could be wrong). I don’t consider the D-Log M on the Pocket 3 a true log, it’s more of a rebranded D-Cinelike. It’s not as flat as D-Log, but it’s still a decent log to work with, just not as adjustable.

Been getting into video and my goal is just to get home video style for travel, nothing cinematic or anything. Yet I have to get a gimbal so I don't throw up watching the footage, a mic to get audio that doesn't sound thin, empty or affected my the slightest wind and ND filters so my aperture doesn't decrease so much that any type of dirt on my sensor or lens no matter the size, doesn't get focused on. So much stuff in order to get what I consider decent video footage. At first I thought the Pocket 3 quality seemed too bright, as if there's no shadows compared to the A7 but the Log footage is extremely close. The stabilization test of you running... was amazing how smooth the Pocket 3. On a device the size of a hand and no where near the footrprint of a compact gimbal like their RS 3 Mini. I don't know how you did it, holding both cameras at the same time at almost the same angle, great work because of this!

I think you should use the gyro stabilization on the A7siii to do the comparison. For hand-held footages gyro stabilization is the only way to go. Maybe also use a focal length wider than 20mm on the A7siii+gyro side, to give space for the gyro cropping.

I didn’t do that this time because it takes a while to ingest the footage and stabilize, and I since I was using auto most of the time, I assume anyone using auto isn’t going to take the time to use Catalyst Browse. But you’re right, I’m curious how it will match up with the Pocket 3 with gyro stabilization.

As a wedding videographer I'll be slapping a Pocket 3 on my handheld rigs (GH6's), this will give good tight and wide shots simultaneously, I already own Cinematch so I'll be using D-Log M and V-Log L with a simple match and Log to Rec 709 Lut

Great test. The gap between them was surprisingly not as large as I would have thought. I thought it would have been easy to pick the A7S3. Interesting the pocket 3 even did hold up pretty well in low light environments. The pocket 3 also appeared to have quite the edge when it comes to moving footage. hmm! Food for thought!

That was exactly my thought too when I loaded the footage on my computer. Recently I mostly use the A7S for just locked off shots, but if I’m moving, the Pocket. And sometimes if I’m filming alone, I’ll use the Pocket because of that tracking. I don’t have any problems mixing the footage because they’re both just so good at what they do.

The Pocket 3 shoots in Normal, HLG, and D-Log M. “D-Log M”isn’t a true LOG, it’s more like a rebranded D-Cinelike. It’s definitely useable and great to have, but the latitude adjustment isn’t as flexible as it would be if it were a true LOG profile.

What a great comparison - nicely done and thanks! The quality and performance of the Pocket 3 is scary. Add the wireless Mic 2 and the many hidden features of the Pocket 3 along with the size and it's pretty amazing for any grab and go applications. For professional photos with a tripod , it will be hard to beat the Sony and other comparable models from Canon or Nike.

I own both and IMO they fulfill different objectives. If you want a camera for cinematic shots, if you're doing capital F "filmmaking", if depth of field is important for your style and storytelling then you should go with the Sony A7S3. If you want portability, hands-off low-light functionality, and something that easily points and shoots video, the Osmo Pocket 3 is fantastic.

I think it depends on what you’re trying to film. If you want to capture yourself and your adventures, the Pocket easily. If you want to make at home tutorial videos, or wanting to create short films, the A7S. You can get away with the Pocket with those shots too, but I think the A7S will allow you to grow as a filmmaker. I honestly have been using my Pocket more than my A7S recently. Even in my recent travels, I’ll bring both and the A7S gets left behind because it’s just heavy and cumbersome.

The Pocket 3 is pretty astounding! I just got mine a couple of days ago. Still, I love my Sony a7C which I think is similar to the Sony a7SIII in some ways. Both are amazing! I also have an Insta360 X3 which I bought only for the above 360 angles and so on. With the X3 the best results are when in the single-lens mode, for sharpness, etc. But about an hour ago, I tested it against the Pocket 3, and I couldn't believe how much nicer the footage from the Pocket 3 was!

It does better than I thought it would. I do still struggle with it when it’s super dark (my recent vlog using it in the teamLab museum, I could not recover anything in the shadows). But I still think it does a great job when you have a decent amount of light

I’m curious who will build the first camera to compete with the Pocket though (I know other companies like Feiyutech and Think Ware have “pocket” cameras, but it’s not the same). I’m thinking Insta360 would be the best bet.

The Pocket 3 held up extremely well, surprised me honestly. Obviously you could put the A7SIII on a gimbal, change lenses, fine dial all the settings and come out with amazing footage, but head to head for normal consumers, I would go with the Pocket 3.

I feel the same way. I love the image from the Pocket 3, but something about shooting with my A7SIII, especially with S-Log3 and the final results I can pull out of it. I just love the A7SIII footage too much.

I’m hoping for a S35 version of the OP3 with a fast wide zoom 20-35mm f2.0. Add built in EVNDs, and use Sony’s new Exmor T dual layer stacked sensor. That will be the only camera I need. Oh, and give us the option for a Raw license. I’m done!

I would make the test so that both on its best setting for that specific scanaryo. Sony should he on its second iso (12800) in lowlight. I would add a footage with Sony attached to gimbal. I have also both. But thanks for the effort for this video.

In hindsight, I should used the best setting when I was comparing in LOG. I did have SS set on both to keep the 180 rule, but I had the ISO capped at 3200 on the A7SIII because it gets noisy after that until 12800.

Sony A7sIII under ecspose on Auto mode, you should go like 2+ on the ecspose. pokcet 3 is amazing but I am a bit conserne about the screen rotation problem the olready pop out for some users

I’ve been seeing a lot of people starting to have screen issues with their Pocket 3. Most of the ones I’ve seen are kind of stuck in that diagonal position. And I’ve seen one where the screen completely popped off (they were able to push it back in though). I don’t even flick my screen open anymore, I just guide it open and close. Hopefully this isn’t a normal defect with this camera

DJI' approach to right out of camera image processing is more progressive, while Sony' rather conservative, being said, Sony can get over by huge margin with proper postprocessing of RAW video files.

Obviously the DJI color science is not as sophisticated as the Sony, but the perception of that difference is actually quite marginal. I have the Pocket 3 and the Sony FX30. The Pocket 3 is the go-to for B-roll, and for vacation shooting I just take the FX30 for specialised shots like telephoto and big landscape, otherwise it's the Pocket 3 every time. The Pocket 3 is a fantastic little thing, easy to set up and easy to carry.

Picture quality is definitely better in the A7SIII. The low light SLOG3 could have better if I jumped up to the “2nd base ISO” of 12800, but I wanted to keep it close to its native base ISO. Still kept it under 3200 as it gets really noisy beyond that. You’re right though, for quick run and gun shots, I’m pulling out the Pocket 3.

The Dji's video will always be better than the Sony and the Sony will always be better with pictures. With ND Filters and settings locked in on the Dji it will be OP for video and O K for pictures.

I think this is a biased comparison made purposefully to make the pocket 3 look good. A7SIII is the indie movie makers favourite camera due to its high dynamic range and class leading low light performance. Then how does in your entire video, A7SIII has lesser dynamic range and looked dark in low light shots?

I don´t get that either. A youtuber I follow films with an Sony A7C. When I saw his latest upload I immediately could tell there was something quite obvious with the video quality. And soon enough it all came clear - on this latest video he said that he also tested out his new piece of gear: a DJI Osmo Pocket 3. It was a BIG difference that even I could see, beeing quite a beginner in the field of video quality.

@@tomask.3983 Pocket 3 is a great camera, and can create almost indifferentiable shots if it is used in the right way. Like, if it is used in good lighting conditions, with good background seperation, it becomes hard to figure out in a youtube video where there is already compression applied. But, in darker environments, or when there is high dynamic range being necessary, like if the sun is behind the person, then it becomes easy to know which is which. All cameras have their limitations. But an expert cinematographer can work around the limitations and even make a movie on a 10 year old smartphone camera. I love pocket 3 for its ease of use, and great picture quality and its stealthiness. It is akward to carry a proper camera in public.

Hahaha, auto everything (shutter, aperture, iso, white balance, etc) and no adjustments in post. It’s a great problem to have because it makes it much easier to mix and match footage. Maybe I should just shoot all my projects in auto from now on 🤣

Let me teach you something, next time, with the Sony A7sIII use this : Cine2 or HLG from 1000 iso, Slog2 at night from 12800, and the creative mode 1600 and above and you will not have grain in low light. you surely used a profile that was not in accordance with the parameters. it's a professional camera, not a toy. Osmo pocket 3 is nothing more than a small camera that has an acceptable image for its size, but not an image to be proud of.
