Hello, thanks for your interesting video and thanks to share it. I need to ask a question please. I only make documentaries in 4K 50p on sunny days. Since it doesn't make much sense to use an ND filter with high framerate and Automatic Exposure, I was thinking to buy a CPL filter and always leave it on, without removing it. I like an image that is a little more contrasted, crispier and with more colour. I use D-Log M, do you think I'll get what I want with CPL filter? Thanks
@loicba
@loicba 10 ай бұрын
If you are filming in D-Log on a bright day, I don't think the CPL filter will change much. I would color correct the video afterwards to get the most colors out of the shot. The CPL could help with reflection but won't really change much else on a sunny day. I actually think a ND filter would be better, it will help lower the automatic shutter speed and the nice motion blur will be more noticeable. With that being said, there's no right or wrong. If you like the look of a CPL, go for it!

Nice and a lot of info her you got!!! I bought also some filters, can you explain what is the difference between CPL, MCUV and ND ? And does the automatic iso have to be off when using - I have a hunch the automatic iso compensates some of the filter effect.. or? Thanks for an easy explanation.
@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
CPL = Cross polarization filter - It allows to remove reflection (in water, windows, etc.) and produces more saturated green and blue colours. MCUV = Mutli-coated UV filter - Most people simply use it as a lens protector because it has no visible effects on the image. The only advantage it that it will reduce flare from UV light. ND = Neutral density filter - It used to remove de amount of light that comes in. This allow to respect the 180 degree rule (double your framerate) to get natural motion blur. No, I use the automatic ISO all the time and it works great. Just make sure that the metering (top left corner) is at 0.0. If it’s above or below, you need to change your ND filter.

I am wondering when I should use nd filters vs nd/pl filters. Then there’s different filters 4k series, E series etc. I am confused which one should I buy. I am totally new in videography. I need filters for Dji pocket 2.
@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
Neutral Density (ND) filters = sunglasses - they make the image darker. This is mostly used to respect the 180° rule (double your framerate) to create natural motion blur. Polarized (PL) Filters = remove (some) reflections and make the greens and blues in the image more saturated. If you are totally new in videography, don't buy filter yet. What is important is composition, storytelling and understanding how every single setting on your camera impacts what you are trying to tell. This is a commun mistake for beginner that want all the best equipment when starting without first taking the time to learn how to tell a compelling story (it's definitely a mistake I made!) The day you will need these filters, you will understand which one you need and why 🙂

So we can't have motion blur and a perfect exposure at the same time, unless we use an ND filter?
@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
@ddc5872

@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
@ddc5872

@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын

If you have the Pocket 2, the wireless microphone seems to compress a lot the audio, it's already better if you plug the microphone directly in the camera. It definitely will be better using an external microphone and recorder. I know most people don't know about the 180° rule but they definitely should care if they are making videos! @@MrRaychard123 If you planning to buy the Zoom H1N, I wouldn't buy the DJI Pocket 2. The main reason to upgrade is the wireless microphone but the Zoom H1N will deliver better audio. The Osmo Pocket also has more depth of field, better active track and easier colors to color grade.
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 4 жыл бұрын
The Pocket 2 internal mics are excellent for capturing a 360 degree soudfield, and rotating it to match the angle of the lens. The pickup pattern can be changed to front, or front and back, or all round. There's also a quite useful audio zoom function and you can also choose mono or stereo or wind noise on or off, plus level control. Chief issue is that there's no easy way to avoid wind noise (though some have sucesfully used DIY screens). Personall I have tried an external stereo mic with 'dead kitten' and it worked well, and I am about to try using a Zoom H2N with its five mics producing surround sound like the built in mics, but it will accept a normal 'dead kitten' over the whole unit. You can use it as a mic only, or as a recorder. A zoom H1N will give you good stereo sound with your Pocket 1, but you will have to combine the audio and video afterwards - not really hard, but somewhat tedious. Choices, choices...

I wonder how did you get getting great photos with it. I just don't know what is wrong with Pocket 2. I've been using it for a week now, so I'm using the latest firmware update. But I found out that the photo quality is horrible. I have tried using every best mode it has, use the manual mode, setting up to the best result it can give, just to make sure I'll get the best quality out of it. But sadly, the result turned out to be so bad. It's so grainy, lack of details and not up to the supposed quality at all. Even my Poco F2 Pro in auto mode can give me much better result than the pocket 2. How is that? Yes, we get great results for videos, but for photo, it produces bad quality I just cannot understand. Please help. Thanks!

The picture quality straight out of the camera for photos is pretty bad. I use the RAW and post-process all the photos I take with the Pocket 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGHMnKeOhNt0qdk. Also avoid using the 64MP mode, use the 16 MP. The reason is that when you take a 16MP photo, it uses pixel binding which mean it merge the value of four pixel into one making the results a lot cleaner!

As the video progresses, he reveals his settings - 24 FPS and a shutter speed 1/80th of a second instead of 1/50th. He comments that it’s overexposed as he drops the shutter speed from the correct exposure of 1/120th of a second to 1/80th - having watched your video, I thought “he needs an ND filter”. I don’t mean to criticise him (I’m not - I’m learning from you and him) but I’d appreciate knowing if I’m right - are the cars and water choppy in your opinion? The video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWS9eKuQmL6cj68. Thanks. Keep up the superb videos.

Thanks, it's much appreciated! 😊 I just checked and you are right, he definitely needs some ND filters to make the timelapse look better 😉 I see two errors with what he has done: 1. 1/80s doesn't blur anything, the water and the cars are relatively sharp (for comparison, my timelapses had a shutter speed of around 1/4s to 1/2s) 2. When using the RAW photo recording, the minimum interval is 4 seconds. Combine that with a shutter speed of around 1/80 and we are missing almost 4 seconds between every photo. With that much time, the cars don't appear to be moving: they pop in and out of the frame. It's an annoying limitation from the DJI Pocket 2 but it's important to keep in mind. For example, in my timelapse of the sunset or the waterfall, it wasn't a problem because nothing moves fast enough and the blur "hides" the fact that we are missing frames. It's not perfect but it also works on the highway shots because the fast motion + exaggerated blur make it look chaotic (but still natural) because our brain process it as us moving really fast!

Oh also, when making a timelapse the rule of "double your framerate" doesn't work anymore. I usually go around 1/10 to 1s second depending on the amount of blur I want. The faster the output of the timelapse/hyperlapse will be, the longer the shutter speed should be to create more blur.

@@loicba Thanks. See, I’m learning from you! As you say that when using the RAW photo recording, the minimum interval is 4 seconds, I’m intrigued to know how you would have performed the same time lapse (the one of that bridge and river). Would you have done it in something other than RAW so that you could select a shorter time interval? If so, roughly what settings would you have used? Also, I’m not sure what you mean by “the faster the output of the timelapse will be...”. Do you mean the faster the objects are moving (in this case the river and the cars) or the shorter the time interval between frames? Thanks for educating me.

Nice to hear that! I am still learning too; I might not be 100% right on everything I say. If I have something moving fast, like cars, I don't use RAW but it's okay with the water if you use a ND filters. There are two solutions: 1. Use a 1/25s shutter and use a 0.5s interval. This should be enough to slightly blur the cars and the small interval will avoid having huge gaps. 2. Use a 1/2s shutter to create lots of blur and use an interval of 2s. You will still be missing frames but everything that is moving will be quite blurry making it look a lot better. I meant that if that if you are taking a timelapses (let's say 10 minutes), you will need more blur if your interval is higher (let's say 10s - output 2s video) than if your interval is short (let's say 0.5s - output 50s video) because everything in the first one will appear to be moving a lot faster, hence more blur will make it look a lot more natural!

@@loicba (This comment is really for anyone like me who is learning). Here’s another example of someone apparently getting it wrong - a time lapse of Hong Kong. It’s interesting seeing the difference (in the same video) between the time lapse of boats (moving slowly so the video is less choppy) and cars (moving fast, very choppy). It’s interesting seeing your advice in action - or not in action in this case - and seeing the effect. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqbYaGtvopiWnbM I’m only coming across these videos as I’m watching them to learn.

I really don't understand why people prefer motion blur. Even the snow looked fantastic falling down with no blur. Many promote that brand, but many of us don't have the money. I will go with PGYTECH.

It's an historic reason of how films have been always made (it's the closest to what the eye sees in the real world). With that being said, if you are like a gamer, they always prefer no motion blur and faster framerates...

@@loicba Thank you for your sensible and intelligent response (as opposed to some other responses I've read). I tried this yesterday, and it still did not work. I am traveling now (in a place where purchasing another phone is not easy), so when I am back home I will purchase a Google Pixel. Fortunately I found someone with a compatible phone so I can at least *use* the DJI Pocket 2, but for someone new to purchasing this type of tech, I feel that making this point in review videos will help new consumers make critical decisions.
