DJI Spark has a serious issue: Spark flies away! UPDATE: read below video

Today, I received an email from DJI Support that this will be treated as a warranty case and I will receive a Spark Alpine White.
Thanks to DJI Support team for the quick response time!
But, question remains whether it is identified and will be fixed or if this might happen again?
From one second to the next Spark lost GPS signal mid-air: I lost the drone and could not find it. It was drifting away too fast at the altitude. After one minute i lost signal to remote because it was too far away. This has to be a serious bug!
Here is what happend in detail:
Firmware was updated to the latest version. Compass was calibrated.
1. I started the Spark, waited until it got a strong GPS signal, then took off manually and slowly with RC to have it record the Home Point safely.
2. After 23s, when I was hovering at about 5m height - for a split of a second there was one warning: "atti mode" which disappeared immediately and all was green and fine again.
3. I went up to 33m - hovered a bit, to see if all is well.
4. Went then further up to 50m. Halted to check again if all is well.
5. Finally went up to 100m. Turned the Spark slowly around to record the view.
6. Flew then approx. 20m to the front and flew 10m back when it suddenly switched to ATTI mode. Battery was at 71% and the second before it was seeing 15 satellites with very good signal strength. The app showed a warning about magnetic intereference and right after that RTH will pass an NFZ, but actually it was hovering only 5 meters away from Home Point, so there was no point to pass a NFZ which was way farther away. Additionally, together with ATTI mode the app showed a red title bar saying "Aircraft disconnected", but I was still able to see the live preview. At this time I was not sure if it was still reacting to the remote or not.
It started to drift away quite fast. It made 360 meters in 60 seconds. I was going after it and trying to initiate RTH, but this was rejected due to ATTI mode.
At this height it was impossible to see the orientation of the drone and impossible to gain back control. At a distance of approx. 400m I lost signal completely and shortly after this I also lost sight of the Spark. It just flew away with 60% battery at approx. 20 Km/h.
I was already quite cautious and alarmed flying the drone, after reading other reports about it flying away or fall from the sky the days before. This is why (thank goodness) after each flight I copied the videos to the laptop - because I was never sure if the next flight is going to be the last flight. And now, after 4 weeks flying the Spark it happend to me - "Flyaway Spark".
In my opinion something like this should not happen. It had good GPS signal and still it switched to uncontrollable ATTI mode at high altitude.

Surely if the Spark drops GPS signal and goes into Atti mode it should stay put, hover and respond manually to the controller!? Just land it if you have lost orientation, reboot and recalibrate it! It was only 5m away from your position but at high altitude. It seems to me a lot of these 'fly aways' are caused by pilot error and not understanding wind conditions at altitude are completely different to the wind speed at ground level. At the point where it disconnects surely it should RTH ? maybe not without GPS? But it should have some kind of failsafe for such an 'advanced' drone! My 'toy grade' quadcopter will RTH without a signal!

Yes and No. First, they tell you it's bad to calibrate unless the APP suggest a recal. The people in forums and DJI FB site tell you not to do IMU repeatedly or CC repeatedly. So what is it? My Spark was fine up until the last updates to GO and Firmware that was kind of forced. Since then, compass errors, magnetic errors (on the exact same flight path). The last time from my deck which i flew many times I get compass, GPS and "disconnect" errors all within a few seconds of taking off. Notice the reports all over. Many Spark owners are getting pissed off. First they take away OTG which worked flawlessly on most phones... leave it only to iOS users (kind of funny being they are in bed with Apple now).... and then the last forced firmware which has given hoards of reports of compass, GPS and AC disconnects. When you are 30' from the AC and it gets these warnings you never had before from the exact same takeoff area.... something is wrong.

I just got a spark and something similar happened to me today. I was already having a slight issue with the drone drifting slightly to one side when moving straight in sport mode so obviously all firmware, ios and app version up to date. Just did fresh IMU cal last night on a surface I verified was perfectly level, then this morning I wanted to be sure there was no interference when I did my compass calibration so I linked the remote and the craft then walked the drone to the middle of an open field away from my controller, away from my phone, keys, etc, then I performed a clean compass calibration. Flew it for 2 batteries and it was performing very well a couple minor drifts here and there but I think that may be normal for the spark because it's just so tiny and not as technologically advanced as dji's other drones so no big deal. Then on my final battery randomly when it was about 100 feet in the air just dropped all gps lock app had a ton of warnings, compass error was red on the screen and the drone just started drifting all over the place; I was lucky and the drone was very close to me so I manually flew it home but its sketchy man. I own a mavic pro and phantom 4 pro obsidian and have owned many other dji drones in the past and I am used to having complete confidence when I have one of their drones up in the air but honestly I just don't feel the same confidence with the spark. The spark is a cool drone and I mainly got it for practicing my actual flying skills/maneuvering and it's great for that purpose, flying this thing in sport mode close to you doing figure 8's and practicing circling and moving in and out of obstacles is a great thing to practice because you should never fully just rely on the automation and you should learn to maneuver yourself and maintain control and orientation however I think there is much improvement to be made on the spark. When I have my phantom or mavic up in the air I have no doubt it will not fail on me. Having duel compass and duel IMU is honestly a great thing and the spark only has 1 of each. Due to its small form factor everything is crammed in and not shielded very well and is more susceptible to interference, hopefully some firmware updates with come out in the future that improve the functionality of this drone.

Sorry you lost her. I lost GPS on my spark 1 time. It happened after I had it near my tape measure in the seat of my car. The magnet on the tape measure screwed it's compass calibration up a bit. So later that day, I flew her. She took off without any errors or warnings, but shortly into the flight I had warnings and no gps. I was able to fly back and land, glad the app didn't crash that time, LOS would have been impossible. I calibrated the compass and no problems ever since. I check the compass cal often now and avoid magnets.

when the spark goes into atti mode it can't hold position against the wind, it looked from the flight log that you were telling it to come down but not telling it to go anywhere. you have to manually fight into the wind when it does that. I had mine do the same and was lucky that it was only 50ft away where i could still fly it line of sight back to me. flying without a gps hold throught the camera is very hard to do when high up. It would be nice if you could manually switch to atti mode in the app like you can with the phantom in order to understand how it behaves without the gps. good luck with your replacement, remember: never stop flying the aircraft.

After analyzing the video I could see that it indeed react to the controller. But in the situation I was not able to see any reaction on the aircraft itself, because it was too far away. And the DJI Go app said that it was disconnected from the aircraft - which apparently was not true either.

Same thing happened to me, and yes I tried to control it against the wind, but I couldnt even control the drone before the screen turned gray and it lost signal. I was roughly only 120 feet away and it lost signal that fast. Starting to get scared about my spark.

I have nearly 13 hours of total flight time with the Spark in 4 different countries and this fly away only happened once. I got it replaced and did not have any issues since. It is definitely worth it. I would buy it again for the next trip to somewhere.

OMG, thought I was the only one experienced this. in my experience, as soon as I lift spark high up in the sky, it started drifting fast and disappeared from my visual. I lost connection and was in panic until it flew back by itself just before battery ran out. this happened twice, and never flew it since then because it was really scary moments.

I had a very similar case couple of days ago in Bremen, but in the last minute a got the control back. Spark was very far, it took like 5 minutes just to come back.

Robert C: Sorry to hear about the fly-away... But looking at your video, at 3:46, it looks like the DJI Go4 app is reporting 2 issues... 1st issue is the magnetic interference error, and the 2nd issue is that your RTH route is passing a no-fly zone... Did you check with any apps to confirm if you were in a no-fly zone... You can contact DJI and send them your logs and they can help determine what possibly went wong..

Henry Wong i was not starting in a NFZ. this message appeared after it switched to Atti mode. as you can see, i was not flying far away from home point. i basically just going up above it. and yes, the issue is, that it lost compass/gps and turned on the atti mode. at this altitude it is impossible to control the Spark in atti mode. it was drifting away with approx. 20 Km/h . I mailed DJI today.

Sorry my friend to loss your drone ...i lost my mavic air two weeks ago but because i did max range and i had very strong wind when back It was my mistake But i have some comments for you : 1- you got a message atti mode short time and disappear, you have to land quickly and don’t continue 2- you didn’t lost satellites but you lost gps mode and change to atti mode , that because the compas not because the gps 3- it is true that your compass didn’t ask for calepration, but you have to go to ac status and click the compas bottom to check how much interference on your compass in this area , i am sure it was a long yellow line 4- generally ( but not your case ) to avoid atti mode you have to check compass interference and also gps ( kp ) index and Gps ( sats locked ) This indexes you will get it from UAV Forecast App And be shur that ( kp ) less than 4 , and (sats locked ) more than 12 It is not only important how many sats you have ( Read at UAV Forecast App help about how much this two factors are very very important) Most of crashes due gps lost because this two factors Without gps or compass 90% will crash

Your video window shows that satellites were always there. Then suddenly it disconnected from GPS.

You can actually locate the whereabouts of the drone in its current position even when it is not in sight. Just use the radar on the lower left portion of the DJI Go 4 app in the screen. The arrow will tell you if the drone is in which orientation from the H point.

mike tippon I actually recently lost my drone while 400 feet suddenly lost gps and buggered off. I have the footage and it travelled a distance of about 6000 feet some how i managed to get it back via rth but it only had enough battery to get me back to 1600 feet and then it started to land... i saw going down eventually it dropped... i managed in the dark for 2 hours to search for it using the map and google maps and i could not believe i actually found it in a massive bush. The map does work if you persist but use google maps to track you to the DJI's location dont use the controller gps it doesnt zero in close enough.

it is certainly neither comforting nor encouraging for a new owner of Spark to read these comments about many fly away, often in open area without obstacles or interferences. Many went sudden into ATTI mode and took off fast. Why many lost GPS, even with 10-12 satellite signal? What have i do if Spark goes in ATTI mode? Do we must calibrate the compass before every flight? But i think this is not the solution......

Mine was only 8 ft from a landing and then suddenly decided to go up and I lost control of it.. Luckily for me, a tree in my yard decided to intercept the little bastard before it can fly away... an expensive device like this needs to have better ways of recovery to prevent fly aways or at the very least help you find it. Like reserve power for tracking only and sound pulses when you get closer.. If they can make something this hi tech, they can make it so we can get it back easier...

Hi folks, the EXACT same thing happened to me here in Norway yesterday. My question is-what is the best process to inform DJI Europe? I am a registered and licensed drone pilot and have never had issues until this. I come from the P2V+ and P3Pro and loved my Spark but only got to fly it 3 times. Used Find my drone but the last GPS coordinates were wrong. Was going to look again this morning but we are having heavy rain today so it will be ruined anyway. How do I best inform DJI?

You should try to stick the LOC8ING iBeacon tag on your next spark - it will allow you to look for it using only BT from multiple phones ( so that few people can look for it at the same time). the detection distance is about 200 ft in open space. i always fly my RC's with the LOC8ING tag as backup for any emergency.

We had severe solar weather that week. GPS systems are not reliable after a kp index of 5 or higher. It sounds like that was your problem to me.

My Spark lost GPS after about 60 seconds flying. No buildings, wires, towers around. Beach and marsh land and trees. Had 13 satellites. All of a sudden it went into ATTI mode and took off fast. i couldn't control it. Not an expert at ATTI flying. It hit the trees and then the ground. I have Refresh so am getting a new Spark tomorrow. I wish they'd come up with some way to help the beginner when the drone goes into ATTI. The consensus seems to be that we need to calibrate the compass before every flight. I'm scared to death to fly now. Will take it slow I guess and try to regain confidence.

Same happened to me. Got GPS from 16 Sats and then it just disconnected, screen frozen and thus no camera view. It was only 220 meters away, 120 meters altitude plus nice open field on the farm with no interferences. The "find my drone app" only shows to the point where it went into atti mode and disconnected - nothing after that. The log also stopped at that point when it all disconnected. I did use RTH before it disconnected. After searching for 3 days I gave up. Drone gone.

The video is from the cache on the phone. This is why the quality is lower than the original footage from the drone would be.

Around 3:43 it maxed out the gimbal angle so there was considerable amount of wind, possibly caught in a gust or draft. Did you manage to get anything our of DJI in this case?

i'm not sure where you see the gimbal angle being maxed out. I was performing a fast forward flight followed immediately by a fast backward flight. DJI sent me a replacement for the lost Spark for free on warranty.

This is a downside of a 1 compass drone, when the compass gets interfered, the GPS Disconnects. and goes to atti mode.

Looks like there is an issue with your compass orientation. If you look @2:35 the opposite shore of the "Maschsee" should be parallel to the bottom of the screen. However the direction the Spark is looking is way more to the north i.e. looks like 20-30° error. Your problems start the moment you move the stick forward. Now GPS travel direction and compass don't match and the bird goes to Atti mode. This does not explain way you loose GPS signal, but your phone got GPS problems as well (circle around you position) Glad for you that you got a replacement

Nice graph ;) Well i never noticed (or paid attention) to the "location marker" of the phone/remote on my DJI 4. But the light blue circle around the blue dot should show the "uncertainty" of the GPS signal. @1:20 its pretty big also @3:31 with your first full stick movement. Did you run after the Spark over the parking lot?

I had the same issue. I think we don't actually "lose" GPS. I think the Spark realizes the compass and GPS are no longer able to communicate correctly so it goes into ATTI mode.

My Spark had the same issue and was lost in the water as well. DJI did not honor the warranty and I will not buy from them again. Its dangerous and too expensive to lose a drone like this.

Agreed! He used left stick to lower altitude but never tried to bring it back. Even without VLOS, you can see on the map which direction the wind was taking it. Sorry for the loss, but at least he is getting a new one.

Hey , Robert . My spark did the same on my first outing after new software. Flew for about 6-7 minutes then off it went . LOST !! I have DJI care refresh so got in touch with them which was about 2 weeks ago and they are still not agree to replace . I think it is because I have lost all the data from the flight. Not happy

usually, all you need to do is just synchronize it with the DJI cloud and tell DJI your user id, so they can access it.

Hallo Zusammen, ich hatte genau das gleiche Problem gestern, die Drohne mit GPS auf 30m gestiegen und nach 70m Flug habe ich die Verbindung zum RC verloren, paar Sekunden zuvor bekam ich die gleichen Warnungen (Flugverbotszone u. Compass Störung, danach war die Drohne nicht mehr steuerbar und ist weggeflogen. Diese war auch nicht mehr aufzufinden. Habe das gleiche vorgehen mit dem Fragebogen zu DJI Support bereits hinter mir, jetzt wollen die eine Rechnung sehen. Hab die Drohne erst den zweiten Tag..echt Bitter sowas. Ich werde dann mal berichten wie es in meinem Fall ausgeht. Da ich in China wohne und die Drohne auch hier fliege, bekomme ich die Antworten recht zügig. Bissher macht der Support einen ordentlichen Eindruck.

Heute hat mich der DJI Support angerufen und bestätigt, dass es sich hierbei um einen "technical error" Seitens DJI handelt. DJI wird mir einen Gutschein für den Kauf einer neuen Spark ausstellen, dieser ist dann in den Shops einlösbar. Im Ganzen bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dem Service. Jedoch habe ich keine Ahnung was den Fehler verursacht hat und ob die Drohne nicht evtl. auf eine viel befahrene Straße etc. geflogen ist und mehr Schaden angerichtet hat. Wie bereits erwähnt, hat der DJI Support, den Fehler nur telefonisch eingeräumt, eine schriftliche Bestätigung hierzu habe ich nicht erhalten. Falls jemand mehr Infos hat was den Fehler verursacht hat und wie man diesen vermeiden kann, würde ich mich über eine Info freuen. Ansonsten bleibt ein mulmiges Gefühl die Spark wieder zu fliegen.

Just lost my Spark earlier today, very similar situation, went up around 300 feet, battery above 80%, very good GPS when suddenly magnetic interference error, drone is drifting away, connection lost and spark is gone. Opened a case with DJI.

Have same problem in Australia. This drone design is faulty and should be recalled world wide. My advice to anyone thinking of buying this drone...DON’T until DJI can gaurantee this problem is fixed. I am going to uninstall DJI app and reinstall, if this does not fix problem I will demand money back.

I can tell you from personal experience the mavic is miles ahead of the spark but the spark does have a specific purpose and fits the needs of some people that the mavic does not.

My one did this today. Exact same errors. ATTI mode and it started flying away. Lucky I got control of it else it would have flown into the mountains Strong gps signal. Then all of a sudden no gps. I did calibrate the compass before flying as I did travel 1300km to a holiday destination. Made sure of gps lock before flight ... Not going to fly it again until DJI gives some feedback on there matter

what about it? everything was calibrated before the flight. the spark simply has no redundant compass and GPS sensors. this is why it easily tends to turn into ATTI mode suddenly. just be carefull with the Spark.

Robert yea, that's weird 12 satelites i have issue with CE european law max range is 200m instead of 2.5 KM :/ trying to switch to FCC mode...

To be honest: I would not fly the Spark more than 200m away. You can barely see it from that distance and when it gets a compass error then you are screwed. It is almost impossible to regain control in ATTI mode when you can not see the Spark because it is too far away.

usually yes. but, not if it is in ATTI mode. then it will just fly away.

Aktuel vertraue ich der Spark kein bisschen mehr. Solange, DJI nicht irgendwelche Sicherheitsvorkehrungen trifft, um das auszuschließen oder abzusichern, würde ich die Spark nur 10-20m weit rausfliegen. Und auf keinen Fall über Wasser.

no, i did not switch to sport mode and i had it connected via OTG cable.

this guy says he had the itg cable to but it kept going in and out to the point where he simply connected his phone via wifi.. so did you get DJI to replace your drone? i heard ATTI mode, thats flying with out GPS, a no no!

what visual warnings did I ignore? There was no visual warnings until 3:43 when the drone switched off GPS and decided to go manual and fly away.

yer not meaning to offend you.. but if all checks were done in the area you were in, or a compass cal done in a clean area well away from where the flight was.. then the first 10 sec hover check, at the first sign of ATTI mode I would have landed and rebooted everything.. but who knows you could have a bad egg.. so not meaning anythng against you
