Great tips! Thanks!! FAA Part 107 states that the drone must always be in line of sight so this is good advice anyway. For the Spark, I would also add one more tip that I learned the hard way: be careful when enabling the backward flying and tracking mode. I was flying in an underground mine for commercial reasons and forgot to disable the backwards flying capability and flew it right into the side of a cave which clipped one of the props and caused it to fall 30 feet which ultimately totaled it. (The Spark has no rear collision avoidance sensor)

I would add, for the Spark at least, keep monitoring the number of satellites you have. Make a habit of doing this when you check your battery, which you should do about every two minutes. One thing I would also mention - check the K index.

Question: I’ve lost 3 drones from them just falling out of sky. What’s up with that? I let Home Point get set, latest firmware, then they randomly just fall out. Not the battery as good crash footage on SIM card? I’ve recovered two. Glad DJI replaces for $40 but still is like to know.

Regarding calibration, my friend lives about 30 km from me. If I take the drone to his place I should recalibrate, right?
@DroneSupremacy6 жыл бұрын
Only recalibrate if your drone asks you to. No need to re-calibrate every single time you move, even if it's 30km away. I've flown 1000 km away from my last calibration and it was just fine :)

Hi Mike, catching you here on this video. Just got a good deal on a Spark and a bunch of accessories and am learning to trust it. Had it out about eleven times in the last week. Right now I am sticking with my Mavic Air. My Mavic Air is getting ready to get some cliff footage of Northern Ireland next week. I do not dare take the Spark over the ocean in another country but your tips in this video are the basics to common sense for flying any GPS drone and your contribution to educating folks on this is appreciated. I am going to see what else you have on the Spark to get all the tips I can. I hope others do as well. Doing the OTG cable and your tips as habit already. Keep up the good work and let's see more beautiful footage. M2

Yup, miss understanding here. I thought that you suggested us to calibrate every single time we fly the drone. But the fact is you suggested us "to not calibrate it" every single time we fly it, just once, which is the proper calibration. Honestly, I calibrate my drone (Mavic) every single time before fly it, even in the same point of location. I ever flow my Mavic on the top of the mountain which is lots of magnetic field. It's very hard to calibrate the drone. I tried so many times before finally it succed. The flight was not smooth, but yeah I tried my best. Anyway, nice sharing, thanks! 👍☺

Great Video. some good points given which most first time pilots take for granted. After auditing more than 500 telecommunications pilons id say interference is low to manageable on most Microwave dishes as well as RF antenna, this after flying (3-5m) away from active radio equipment. This goes for the DJI p4 and Mavic pro on the spark the interference cases connection issues basically every time if you get too close (+-10m) from the antenna. Id say if someone is continuously crashing newer drones they should really reconsider flying drones, there are so many safety features preventing crashes that you have to absolutely screw up to crash a newer Phantom or Mavic. Word of advice, listen to the warnings the drone is giving you it easier to land and reconfigure or check the drone rather than to crash and destroy a complete unit.

Kind of a question/ comment here. I use my apple I-Pad when flying my drone, which is much better to use then the small screen on the android phone. So my question, when flying my DJI Spark, I tried using the RTH button with remote icon, but says the mobile signal is to weak. Guess that would work if flying in a more wide open area? I live here in Washing state west of the Cascades and have lots of tall trees surrounding our house.

Very good information.. I would just like to add to things that you may have forgotten, you should always download a good app like UAV forecast it is in the iOS and the Android market free and it gives you another user interface that you can look at one important thing on that user interface is the KP index, it's a scale from 1 to 5 and it shows the electromagnetic solar flares that are thrown by the Sun at different times during the year if the KP index is above let's say at 3 there is a greater chance that your drone may lose GPS and go into the dreaded.....Atti mode! With the yellow flashing leds....😡

I've seen some cloud surfing videos and that is something I would like to try with a drone.

I think 400 feet is the max. 500 feet for GA over sparsely populated areas. That gives a 100 hundred foot separation.

My Soark is so little that keeping it in sight, say when it's out 200 m, is impossible - I simply can't see it (nor hear it). I hard-wire my controller to my iphone, watch the iphone video to see what's ahead of it and, use RTH to bring it back. I like my RTH altitude to be set at 60 m - out in the rural areas where I fly, nothing is up that high. I prefer not to bring my battery lower than 60 % if I'm flying it on a straight line away from me - I like to have enough battery to RTH. Of course, if I'm flying it close around me, I can ake the battery down farther

@reconnaissancesquadron2226 жыл бұрын
Looking up they are all dark grey, and it doesn't really matter because you see the shape rather than the colour against a bright sky, or you see the LEDs if it's dark. What matters is which is easier to see if it has crashed. Avoid the Meadow Green! The Lava Red will stand out against most horizontal surfaces you might make an unplanned landing on.

@DroneSupremacy6 жыл бұрын
Hello Cesar! I have flown the Spark indoors a couple of times and it's really stable, one thing I can recommend is to put on the propeller guards, for more safety. And I wouldn't advise you to use RTH since that's GPS-based, it would be safer to fly it back to you manually.

It simply means you can set a new Home Point - if you choose the first option (the arrow) the new Home Point will be where the drone is located exactly at the moment, whereas if you select the other option (the person with the remote controller), then the Home Point will be stored as your current position - where you're standing with the remote controller. I hope that gets it more clear for you :)

No you got it wrong again, if you choose the option person with controller the Spark will follow the controller, this is useful if on a boat or car, bike or moving.

Question for you Drone Supremacy, what do you do while it's flying and all of the sudden it turned into atti mode? Thank you
@brmmrb57806 жыл бұрын
Wayne Rumambi i had that problem i had my drone 3 days and i had a fly away. It went up and it went in to atti mode, i saw that it was not doing what i was doing with the remote and i saw it fly away, i was 92 meters high. Living in Europe my remote only works for 200 maybe 300 meters. So i started to run behind the fly away drone and pushing the remote trying to lower the drone.. it came down to 60 meters. I kept on running behind the spark. And about 900 meters, i got cotrol over it again. It also found the gps again. I could not see what was happening on my phone because there was text that i did not know how to take away from phone screen. I think when gps came back it would have gone back to RTH, when battery was low. But not sure. I did not know what atti mode was. I calibrated compas and IMU and have no problems anymore. So i did the right thing, running after it and trying to be near drone and trying to bring it lower. I think i was near to an iron bench when it went up and the compas was not working well, stay away from iron. My drone went with the wind. If you can see on your screen where you are try to find yourself and try to fly to yourself. Maybe you can see my fly away here kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKXKoJiCnZhpfJI
@reconnaissancesquadron2226 жыл бұрын
This is how I lost my first Spark. I was in a clearing and I could only see a small patch of sky. It went from Tripod mode to Atti mode and it went haywire. I tried to make it go up to avoid a crash. WRONG. I should have brought it down. Crashing into the treetops would be better than flying away never to be seen again. Did you know that a Spark can fly at 20 metres per second? It can't. But my flight data said that the lost Spark did. I assume it changed its mind about where the Spark was and deduced that it must have flown 20 metres in a second. If you are flying in the clear and it goes into Atti mode just don't panic. Let go of the controls. Wait. It will usually go back to GPS mode in a second or two. Exit Tripod mode if you were in it because the difference between Atti mode and tripod mode is so severe it really messes up your reflexes. Recently I was flying with the Spark about a kilometre away and it went into Atti mode and stayed in it (I think it was in the path of a beam from an antenna mast). I didn't panic. I just looked at the screen and started to work out which direction to head back in manual flight. I started back in the right direction and it returned to GPS mode so I engaged RTH until it came much closer again. Try to work out which direction is home, find a landmark nearer to home and fly towards it hoping to get all your GPS functions back. In another occasion, I was flying over some private gardens and it went crazy. The degree of control was very limited as the sensitivity to control movements was extreme so that I was lurching crazily across the sky. I could aim broadly away from the sensitive place I really didn't want to crash in. Fortunately, there was a large field nearby and I could aim at that as it was so big it was hard to miss. I just brought it down as fast as I could before it could go away across the fields and beyond the range of the controller. Fields are good. If it missed the field I would have tried to hit a tree (hopefully a gentle glancing blow), this is not as good as a field but is better than it just flying away never to be seen again.

Having your drone in line of sight and setting the RTH altitude has nothing to do with fly aways. Furthermore, i think you mean ElecroMagnetig interference (EM) instead of magnetic interference. That a miscalibration of the compass is the cause of fly aways is highly unlikely. When it is really off, the app will warn you. The rest of your tips...well they are not spectaculair are they? You missed the most probable cause of fly aways and that is hard wind .Especially when you fly high (above 1000 meters ) the wind may surprise you. The app warns you, but it also does when there is no real risk. Or a cause can be a technical failure. No interference, but the bird just crashed. Just like your iPhone does.
