At weddings I normally play to the 50+ year old guests early on. I have found that they tend to have longer attention spans, go home earlier and like to hear complete songs. Half way in I will then begin transitioning to the younger guests with quick mixes. That seems to be a good formula as it always works for me. Everyone is happy.

That’s the truth some people love it some people hate it. I go by what the client want I don’t go by my skills or ego. Plus it truly depends what part of the country your at and the crowd but more over what the Client wants.

I started DJing in the early 90's. I did get into for the music and the mixing. I hated when it started becoming about being the "entertainer" with the games and cheesy stuff. I always wanted it to be about knocking people out with good song choices and mixing. I'm glad it has come back to it's roots.

I think you can still do that today but with shorter attention spans and unlimited entertainment - it’s not enough for 4+hrs. Less than an hour set - still possible!

I agree with you in most of what you're saying, with a few exceptions, or rather add-ons. I'm 55 and have been a DJ since 1985, so the first thing I do agree on is that you need to evolve the way you mix, or you're out. In Sweden we have a culture difference, compared to the rest of the world, which means that in general people are only dancing to what they can sing along to. If you've been playing dance bangers, no one 's dancing and someone's asking you to play something they can dance to... then you know it's something they can sing along to they really mean. i mean, even our most famous artists in the club scene like Avicii and Swedish House Mafia, look at which their bangers are... and they've done a lot of non vocal tracks that are insanely good. Swedes in general have no clue these songs even exists :) . This makes quick mixing a little more of a challenge, because if you cut down the songs people really like to sing along to, they do get mad eventually. I prefer to play dynamically, which means that you need to know which song are OK to quick mix and you need to have a feel for when to let a song play out. I play for university students a couple of time every month on their campus Wednesday club and there's a lot of international students attending. A good night there's more than a 1000 people partying wildly and I have to give the non Swedish students some attention because the rest of the night I will play Swedish songs in Swedish. To get the Swedish students to tag along I have to find the right mostly latin and English songs that everybody knows, like Justin Bieber and his Baby... A song I never paid attention to when released, as J B was kind of lame back then... So I cut it off before the famous rap part and quick mixed in to something else... BIG mistake. The whole dance floor kind of went silent and everybody +- 500 ppl stopped dancing, to a song that usually makes people go crazy, and it took me a while to get things going again, which normally never happens in there. I made that note in my mind not to play that song again... but later I got Baby requested again, and when i said it's already been played, she replied ''yeah, but not the best part, so we wanna hear it again''. ...so I deleted that note I made before and actually played Baby again, which don't happen often, and voila, the rap part went nuts, so now I play the whole effin song, and they sing their lungs out every time, and this still is a song I can't get what's so good about it, which I usually can. But there's this saying that applies to most businesses ''The customer is always right''. Listen, adapt, evolve. A side note: This starting on the 1? I don't get. When I get in there quick mixing, most vocals don't start on the 1, and if you cut the start of the vocal, it sounds shit, as if you skip the phrase mixing. If you have beat grids you can set the start cue on an empty beat to start on the one, but I often play on older gear like the first Pioneer CDJ-2000's, which shows no beat grids. Then you need to be able to start the song as if you were singing it, and I've noticed that a lot of DJ's have trouble doing that. If you like me play a lot of radio versions, there's a lot of singing as the song was never made for us DJ's, so at best, I only have the last bar of a chorus to make the change over to the next song. From one vocal to the next, often from one chorus to the next chorus, unless a song has a very famous intro you just have to play, like ''One Direction - Story of my life''. That one I usually start with the instrumental intro on an outro, and then dropping the beats when the vocal hits. Works every time, and that is also a song you can't quick mix into, because the best part is the last vocal break down and the last chorus, when people goes bananas... I was fortunate enough to have a tutor that told me to practice a lot with 7' records to get the speed of my mixing up, and to make sure I still mix in beat, which is a lot more important than beat mixing, done within a resonable BPM frame. That was 38 years ago... Quick mixing is not a new thing, it's just been a lot easier doing with all the new tech we all have access to.

Facts man, I've been quick mixing in the exact way you have been describing, with all the right song selections and it's like shooting fish in a barrel. I get photographers/wedding planners asking for cards, saying they don't normally like the "DJ's". I'm booked May-October with weddings every weekend. So many "DJ's" get into this craft for the wrong reasons, and you know what? They just make us look BETTER!

I agree that mixing is a must. But I’ve had couples ask me to play more than one verse of each song. They told me they’ve been to weddings and the Dj only played a minute of each song and they hated it. So, I don’t know. I’ll do one verse mixes on an older hip hop, euro or select other sets, but generally people want the 2 verses.

Quick mixing, combined with the right song selection works real well. I don't recommend it every song. Read the crowd and if they are getting into it than it's okay to play the songs a little longer. Grab hot cues and it's okay to skip thru to the best parts of the song. There's certain songs for example mr brightside , yeah 3x , dynamite and Starships intend to play almost the whole tracks. Yet otherwise I tend to agree with everything you've said :)

I get the quick mixing especially with longer song , and lack there of energy songs. Plus a lot of stuff seems more condensed today and minimal in general. You see a lot of places where the DJS play from 9:00 to midnight. That same regular business/venue, bar, club, lounge, tavern..no longer has a DJ come in from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am. It's 9:00 p.m. to 12 am for one DJ, and 12 am to 2 am for the other DJ.

I've found that early in the night to play some full songs then as the night goes on i start throwing in quick mixes and toward the end I'm doing quick mixes and I'm booked every weekend thru October of 2023 and make more per gig than everyone else in my area. I found the niche that works in my area and out book my competition.

I was thinking the same. Older songs for the older people can play out a little longer. Newer songs at the end of the night for the younger guests with no attention span should be cut shorter.

This is coming from a real wedding DJ who is booked 3 weddings every weekend for this current season: I don't think I've seen very many comments here that suggest that the DJ should watch the crowd and see how they're responding and reacting to what you're doing. Eye's up, not down. Are they singing? Are they dancing? Then keep doing what you're doing. Are they not? Then change what you're doing. Song selection is more important than how fast you're mixing. This RULE that you shouldn't play full songs, or that the hugest most ginormous amount of songs played by the end of the night equals best DJ set ever, straight up not true, and there are more than a couple exceptions to songs that can be played all the way through. However if a song is only good enough to be played for less than a minute, then that my friends might just be a crap song and is potentially not worth playing unless requested by the B&G or a guest. You're fine to mix out of most songs in the 1:30 to 3 min range, unless it's just crushing, then you can continue to play it past 3 min and phrase it properly into your next track at your discretion. In fact, I would recommend a hybrid between quick mixing and more extended mixes, and watch your crowd. Also if it's true that you can mix too slow, then it's also true that you can mix too fast. If one DJ plays a set with 50 songs, and within the same time frame another DJ plays 100, the 2nd DJ's set is not "twice as good". Is it even "better" at all? I dunno, were the people dancing and having a good time at both? Then it doesn't matter how many songs were played. And this extreme black and white view that you're either playing full songs and have no idea how to mix, or you're playing as many songs as possible and are in super saiyan form, is completely missing prioritizing the reaction that your crowd is giving you. Assuming that quick mixes are the be all end all in every situation leads to turtles all the way down... like if I played 10 seconds of every song by that logic I'm the greatest DJ ever cause I will have played nearly a thousand songs within a couple hrs. lol, also its genre dependent. Are you quick mixing country, slow dances, or even most rock? forget about it. Hip Hop, pop and dance music you can get away with more quick mixing. Younger people are more prone to like quick mixes, older folks not so much. I hope this helped some people.

I had a big destination wedding in 2017 that I was really nervous about. The grand entrance was 16 couples all to different song edits. I nailed it and the coordinator was blown away. I was SO happy how it went. There was about 15 minutes left at the end and I still had a ton of requests. So I thought, why don't I just play the best parts of these songs to get them all in before it's time to go. It completely BLEW UP and they loved it. That was my first experience with quick mixing.

Quick mixing keeps your audience ENGAGED to what you’re doing. Keeps them locked in and entertain keeps your dance floor busy! I mix quick mix, 45 seconds to 1 minute per song with some acceptions as he mentioned Maybe some dj who play full songs don’t have a large library to support quick mixing and they’ll run out of songs. Nick you are spot on
@TheLordyorkshire
@TheLordyorkshire 2 жыл бұрын
Being a DJ , you keep your audience ENGAGED and keep the dance floor busy. If you Quick Mix, then the term ‘spraying & praying’ comes into play. You don’t really know what to play or lack confidence so you play a lot of songs hoping something hits, with the back up of it doesn’t you’ll be playing something different shortly. We should call that style of DJ’ing ‘Playing & Praying’. As for comments about the music library. Every quick mixers only go though a few hundred songs in a night whilst others go through about 100 full songs. Every DJ has enough songs, your just looking for a negative where one doesn’t exist. As said elsewhere, sometimes you will do some short mixes, sometimes full songs. But the balance should be dictated by your audience and your ability to be a good DJ.

@@TheLordyorkshire no because people have short attention spans, we are DJ not jukeboxes , Quick mixes keeps the people wanting to dance to something new and fresh, nobody cares to hear a song 4 mins long and you can’t expect them to have the same vibe and energy from the first drop to the last beat of the song that’s just silly talk.

I like to pivot off of two verses. Two verses is the home base. Depending on the songs, I may do some one verse quick mixes for a bit, then back to two verses. For certain classics, I go three verses. At the end of the night I average about 2 minutes per song, 30 songs an hour. It's all about balance and harmony. I should note that I'm primarily a 70's funk/disco DJ. I definitely quick mix through the funk, almost like a breaks dj on 45's. But when it comes to disco classics, especially ABBA, those are two verse minimum for sure.

At my last club gig where I was the opener I did 12 songs for the first hour (Deep House), and 50 for my second hour, tech house and some future rave. The way I do it is, I always pre arange my sets and I try to keep the same motif for 5 songs straight. 5 songs, one minute each, but the feeling, groove and the energy stays the same, then I break the energy with a long breakdown, vocal only mostly, rinse and repeat. Everyone was extremely happy about my performance!

A few commenters made the point already but just wanted to chimev in. I learned from my cousin in the late 70s early 80s. I would do parties and school dances. It was always about the mixing and reading a crowd. In the late 80s early 90s the Entertainers came out of the woodwork and made it all about party games. It took away from real DJs. I got back in to the system in 2004 until about 2014. I still have some of my equipment and like to play my own parties and when i get behind the console its about the mixes for certain songs and letting some of the good ones play through, as you mentioned. My long time friend and business partner stil DJs and kicks it really good these days. When you're good at beat mixing, reading a crowd and MCing, you can stay relevant and make great $. Nick, watching you brought back my interest in returning to the art. Thanks!

Or, do you have any KZbin video's that you'd recommend. Yes....I've watched many. But none of them (that I've found) really help. (sorry lots of questions) Do you have all of your songs set up with cues points so you can easily load a song and know where each and every chorus and verse that you know need to be played? Do you have a video on your approach? You may have a video on this, I've watched many of your videos but not all of them. (and they are all awesome)

Nick you are so right buddy ... I used to DJ in the mid 1980's so indeed whole songs and mixing into the next vinyl ... ;-) Recently, like a year ago, just for very small parties sometimes anniversaries I play music and I bring the whole shebang (tops, woofers, pioneer turntables, laptop, internet steaming, lights) and yes I confirm ... people are satisfied but as you said I got one big remark ... Everything's cool but your songs are too long ... and indeed a couple of times I lost the dance floor I got them back but I would have been nicer if it were not scattered. I'm going to deep dive into beat & quick mix ... not easy for me in the beginning i guess but I'll get there for sure. These posts are great ... ,much appreciated

OK ... I just saw this video again from when I posted two years ago. I respect what he is saying and I know that he has done as many weddings as I have. So here is what happened. I teamed up about a year ago with another DJ and we do weddings together. It's great after being mostly solo for so long. My strong point is music knowledge and my ability to read the crowd. His strong point is quick and other fancy mixing. The crowd loves him when he gets into his groove. It gives the wedding a club like feel. When I play I mostly focus on playing the right songs at the right time. Both of us can pack the dancefloor and keep it packed. In the end we are probably about a tie when it comes to rocking the dancefloor. In other words he is not that good at reading the crowd and his music knowledge is not that deep. But he makes up for it with his mixes. The opposite is true for me. Either way we both get things poppin!

He eventually passed on his 1210s to me and I got a gig in a bar playing latino house music and the records were about 8 mins long and everybody danced all night (back when a phone was just a phone). People's attention spans have shortened these days and I loved that phraze 'pity dance' lol .I am only just staring to learn how to mix hip hop/ RnB and how to scrach, Keep up the good work work !

Great content, Nick! ...and you are spot on with your assessment of DJing in the modern era. Back in the day when I was doing mobiles and clubs (the late 80s through the Naughties), a DJ would attack things from a different perspective. Generally speaking, it was verse > chorus > verse > chorus > out. Of course, back then you were either using turntables or CDs, so you were more limited in what you could do and more tied to the structure of a song. It wasn't as easy to jump right to the section that you wanted to play as it is now, but with modern controllers, there's no excuse NOT to quick mix. My advice... Listen to Nick. Get on your decks and learn what they can do, and in case Nick didn't make this clear enough... PRACTICE!

Thanks Nick for share your knowledge. I think the younger people likes the quick mix style. I have tried with older people (around 60 or 70 years old) and in most cases they complain about the quick mix, I am talking about cases in my country (Mexico) they are used to listening to a large part of the song but in the end I agree with you it is to reinvent ourselves as DJs, if we want to stay in such a competitive market. The key is to practice and prepare as you highlight in the video. Greetings! Alberto.

Watching you in this video I understand why you'll play only one verse of each. The diagnosis was discovered for over 100 years ago. DJ-ing was not a word on that time. Can you please also give us a giglog of a real wedding where you are playing your one verse mixes at 3x speed? Thanx aloooooooT.

The reception is a party and they want it to be a club atmosphere usually.....you better bring it......I told a young man just 3 days ago that approached me at a gig and said I was playing some nice music he was thinking about getting some software.....my suggestion to him is to become familiar will all genres of music and learn how to quick mix and how to transition smoothly......It's so much fun to control and read the crowd.

Rob Swift helped me learn to mix. I learned to scratch before learning to mix because I thought this was what a DJ does (mostly). Now I quick mix mostly because Im tired of hearing the same old songs. LOL! The same wedding stuff to get to stuff I want to try out. LOL! Great vid as always bro!

Great info Spinelli. I’m with you on this. Q: are you using Serato Flip to cut to the best parts of the song? Or are you simply using hot cues?
@patmer2087
@patmer2087 11 ай бұрын
Wish he replied but I just started back after a 20 year hiatus and stems and hot cues is a game changer for me when it comes to quick mixing (I usually have 3-4 hot cues) 2 for mixing, 2 with just acapellas for just playing the best parts. Hope that helps 😅

I set cues and Flips. Gives options to jump thru songs. Began using hotmix (quickmix) format in clubs in early 80s after hearing WBMX Hotmix-5 DJs in Chicago. Hotmixing done right pumps the energy.

Yes! The key is finding out what is the BEST part of the song! Hate when djs cuz lil Wayne off at the end of "Back That Ass Up" also the "no hands" best part is when it goes "rain rain go away that's what all the haters say" music.. some songs where it's Drake, Nicki & Weezy I tend to let it ride cuz they all kill their verses. But great point Nick! These kids attention span is ridiculous now days.. I'm constantly learning & trying to mix faster..

my particular style, is mainly two verses. to give people time to enjoy the song, their part, get up and move to the floor, sometimes i play 1 verse then the next song. i know some-people that play like 30 seconds of a song and move to the next 30 seconds, then the next song for 30 seconds. that's not my style, but hey some people love it. before i finish this video, i'll say i'm older. (mid 40's), attention spans aren't what they used to be. so 3 minutes of a song, ...people start to get bored with a song. hell,, when i was a little kid, songs were 7-8 minutes long and whole albums had 6-7 songs max. hell, my older brother had his music on 8 track tapes. no re wind or fast forward at all lol

On a serious note, do you have any tips for those of us who play parties that are culturally diverse and have to play a wide range of music? I have to do everything from country, reggae, hawaiian, spanish. guamanian, pop, top 40, old school, freestyle, hip-hop, 80's new wave, etc.

Quick mixing all the time can be boring, it’s like always playing the same songs or always doing the same thing, I like to switch it up depending on the crowd. I will definitely never quick mix at a corporate event 😂🤣

Your advice for playing the best part of songs and not most of the song is only for tunes everyone is familiar with. And even then it isn't necessarily better to quick mix. It depends on the situation. You are entitled to your opinion. If a song is good, people won't get bored if you play most of it. So if you need to quick mix a lot, then that could indicate your selection isn't good. There is a time and place to quick mix.

Again, I agree with most of what you're saying. Not disagreeing with you but... we've been quick mixing from jump street. Our crowds here in Cali can be brutal. If you don't get down, they let you know! Skipping isn't done that much. Straight up... that's where skill and recognition is key. Freaking TIK TOK MAN! Evil necessity.

I'm a OG DJ I did quick mixing in the 90's. I was forced/discovered quick mixing because I was never a club resident dj. I did guess spots with a 1hr set. I thought it sounded good & I would get good reviews after. I took that new skill & rocked a lot of college fraternity parties & eventually became the resident for them. It's a necessary skill to have & it should be easy these days because I used vinyl, mixing was done by ear no laptops, controllers, or serato.

Love your style! You have and give energy! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I find you true your Instagram account. Totally agree whit you! Mix old and new! One good tip for beginners, is get to know your songs, and for beginners have a playlist and learn the BPM. Do some research and ask who hire you what kind of music they like. Is it most young people ore is most of them 35+ is also helping what kind of songs you choose. Learn and sort your music by BPM. Feel the crowd.

I would love to see a full length video of one the weddings you quick mix from the beginning to the end of the nigh. I know KZbin may flag it. But if your playing just a few seconds of the song KZbin should let it fly. But the Video has to show you and your dance floor at the same time also no video editing. I guess if you edit a video I guess you can call that quick mixing also.
