Theory: Would a better alternative to "Making You Feel Bad" for harvesting Little Sisters instead be to make Jack slowly turn into a Splicer each time he harvests one? Like, the interface get's blurrier and it get's more difficult to use the more intelligence-based abilities like hacking and cameras?
@asthmeresivolisk3129

No. The ludonarrative theme is "Do what is best for you, even if at the expense of others". Instead, each time you save a little sister it should spike up the difficulty. It shouldn't give you a big Adam reward for helping the little sisters. In fact, you should get 0 Adam for helping the little sisters. The game should stomp your balls for helping the little sisters. The game should drive you to rationalize being a depraved child murderer to make things just ever so slightly easier. To help yourself, even if at the expense of others.

@@asthmeresivolisk3129 Wasn't the entire arc about Ryan having that attitude and how it ruined his little paradise? Wouldn't it be the narrative's goal to be: "Being selfish is bad"?
@asthmeresivolisk3129
@asthmeresivolisk3129 3 жыл бұрын
@@thebighurt2495 Yes, yes it was... in layman's terms. Essentially the message was twofold. The meta narrative (formed around the gameplay itself) is that you're a slave to the game's objectives and to a larger extent Frank Fontaine. The ludonarrative however tried to marry your desire to survive at all costs in this hellish landscape with the game mechanics supporting the opposing ideologies of altruism and objectavism. The key word here is tried. The game shouldn't make you feel bad for killing the little sisters because of 2 reasons. 1. Any sane and decent person would find it obvious that killing a child is pure evil. So making you feel bad for doing so is unnecessary. 2. In order to hammer in the destructive effects of objectavism the game should PUSH you to compromise your morals to achieve your goals, without making you feel like a monster in the moment. Video games give players the unique opportunity to experience a story in a more personal and active fashion. You are the pilot behind the scenes in a game and YOU make the decisions. By making the choice to spare the little sisters exponentially more burdensome for your character or would reveal "who you are in the dark". If you transformed over the course of the game the message would feel more like you were being hit over the head with an anvil, obviously killing children is wrong, you don't have to make my metaphorical transformation into a monster that blatant. Instead it is far more effective for a player to be pt in the position where they justify and rationalize their child killing tendencies with the concept of "the ends justify the means" so that at the end of the game, when their victory is hollow because killing little sisters makes you a physical god and nothing in the game challenges you anymore... then you can reflect on the monster you've become. Was all that bloodshed necessary? Did you really think what you did was okay? At that point you'd pick up the game again and trudge through the experience anew, with a new goal. To save the kids, even if it makes the game insanely difficult. You would experience the themes of the game first hand, the power of a megalomaniac thirsty for power and objectivist to the core. And that of an altruist who silently suffers to save something seemingly "insignificant" to the "big man". That's why I say make the game crush you for making the right choice. Because doing the right thing is obvious, but it's also not easy.

@@asthmeresivolisk3129 I don't get why people think the theme is "Do what interests you" instead of "Because some rich fucks don't have limits, you don't have a choice". If anything, the difficulty should spike up and you should harvest the girls not for your own benefit, but to complete the mission you're obligated to complete.

I think what Bioshock said in the end is pretty clear. It is and was meant to be (especially with addition of Burial at Sea) a game about personal redemption, repaying debt, and everyone's capability of both good and evil. But the rest of it - fascism, religion and political commentary is pretty much fluff that may be was meant to be something more but ended up as a decoration. And at the end of the day it is a great story of redemption and personal choices. And a very fun game.

On hard difficulty with Vita chambers disabled i feel you get the truest form of bioshock. You can turn off Vita chambers so when you die you redo the level. Obviously if youre struggling at one part the game doesn't want to totally reset because you died, but some people prefer that kind of punishment because those players understand they made a mistake and they can do better. It's not a difficult game, its a well balanced game with scaling difficulty. And thats why i love the first bioshock...

Booker being reborn into comstock after all those atrocities he commited just ked to more of the same atrocities. If we forget the past, we are condemned to repeat it. that's not really what "ludonarrative dissonance" is about, though - harmony isn't about having choice, it's having the gameplay and story support each other. LISA deliberately undermines many of the choices you make, but it works since it goes to show you that you don't always have very much control over the sort of person you want to be.

I know you probably aren't reading comments over half a year after its release, but I would like to throw my hat into the ring and share what I personally think Infinite is about and how It's gameplay can, in a certain point of view, support the story To me, the over the top nature of Booker's backstory is in an of itself satire. Satire on the edgy nature of game protagonists. And the whole "There is always a lighthouse etc" is a reference to shooter games in general Most all have the same base story beats and mechanics. You are some special character, be it a special forces operator or a mythical being. You go to exotic locations and fight crazy enemies that are just as over the top as your character. Guns are all pretty much fitting the archetype of "Sniper, Pistol, Rifle etc". Those are constants Variables are the gimmicks. Leaning, ordering a squad, fighting on a different planet, fighting in a sunken city. The thing to me that makes me view Booker as a unique character is that, for all his flaws as a character, he tells a compelling message. All other shooter games, the protagonist shoots or stabs or strangles the bad guy and goes home. But no matter how hard Booker fought, he only made things worse for both him and his daughter. So by the end its Booker accepting that he cannot win and simply to die that truly he beats the game. He stops perpetuating the violence that ruled his life, and goes out relatively peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. To end the cycle. To end the cycle of repetitive games with nothing to say The DLC, Burial at Sea however hits an important note. No one event will end that cycle. These games will always be made, so long as there is demand. But hey, I'm no professional critic. We are all allowed to have different opinions

I enjoyed 2 over 1, because the story was much more simplistic, and made sense. You are a slightly famous outsider, kidnapped then turned into a monster, but your one tie to your humanity is your little sister, who so happened to be the daughter of a major cult leader within Rapture. Each step you take within Rapture towards your adoptive daughter represents you attempting to rebuild your identity that was so wrongly stolen from you. Each of your moral actions have more of an impact on your daughter than on you, as you are the only positive man in her life. So you can play the diver as either a determine survivalist who will use everything he has to survive so turns your daughter into a survivalist who sees others as simply tools to be used, or you are a Christian who saves those who hurt you, and sacrificed what little you had to those who need it, which turns your daughter hopeful in rescuing the other little girls from their conditioning within the cult. This even colors your aggressive actions within the game. Are you the kind of man who strikes after a threat has been determined, or one who strikes when he has an opportunity? These things line up with your character choices. Still, I see why players did not like the game over 1 or infinite. Both have meme moments that players still remember to this day, but suffer from significant flaws. I still don't care for infinite's story or what they tried to do with it, as it destroys all of Bioshock's lore.

As a long time fan of the series, this was beautiful. Not only did you explain what the series did… which is a commentary about beliefs taken to the extreme (and that’s putting it simply). But you narrowed it down to the tiny things… Rapture having already collapsed vs. You’re the one who causes Columbia to collapse. I didn’t think of Ludonarrative dissonance and Bioshock being one of the prime examples of a game that falls into it.. but now I kinda see how it is the series that led to the term being coined. You also touched on an idea… Just because the game was a technical failure at what it was trying to accomplish… doesn’t mean we can’t love or appreciate it. So many people will bash a game without representation of another side

17:31 BioShock allows you to turn off Vita chambers and rely solely on manual saves. Focus on Big Daddies just before exiting a level so you're fully equipped and stocked as you can be for an encounter. Big Daddies despawn permanently after progressing to the next level so you can't come back overpowered with late game upgrades. Hack everything, especially turrets, they will tank some damage and add to your DPS against a Big Daddy until theyre destroyed. Hacking Vending Machines is important as well as theyll offer you alternate ammo types and discounts on others, improving ammo availability. Enemies respawn, so they can be farmed for loot without spending ammo by luring them to friendly turrets and security bots Kill everything in the vicinity so you can focus on a Big Daddy, preferably with Enrage so you can get some free damage on the Big Daddy while eliminating enemy Splicers. Be generous with stun attacks like Electrobolt, your eve is most valuable in denying damage rather than dealing it once you're in direct combat. When you first approach a Big Daddy, start the fight near environmental hazards like oil spills or pools of water to get in some free damage. You can use Security Bullseye to wear down Big Daddies while hiding using Natural Camouflage or just finding a good hiding spot. Finally, learn the position of all the explosive barrels in a level before a fight in order to chuck them at Big Daddies to deal huge chunks of damage to their health.

I love you cobbler, but I would say you missed the conclusion that bioshock was going for. At least in my opinion, on the internet, in a comment section. To me, the reason we met with Elizabeth and learned that there is always a lighthouse is symbolic and metaphoric. The lighthouse represents power and government, or control in general. There is always someone exerting control over the people. We see this with the fascist society in infinite or with big daddies in 2 or with, well, a slave obeys, in 1. I think bioshock is actually going for a message similar to "there is always someone in control messing stuff up" to put it in laymen's terms. That's the consistent issue in every bioshock game, the government being a bit screwed up. Elizabeth is showing us that in all these realities as long as there is a government we will always be screwed over and manipulated. And that's why we need to go anprim, join me brothers in returning to monke and dying of preventable diseases.

Love the video, but I disagree on the difficulty critique of Bioshock. I’m not big on Vita-Chambers, but doing the painful war-of-attrition thing against a BD for 15-20 mins on survivor is just as good as dying and resetting a few times when it comes to teaching the player to fight. Instead of throwing themselves at BDs over and over, players learn to use their environment thru hacking turrets/cams, environmental explosives, tripwires, proximity mines, etc., all to avoid a more painful fight. When I played on survivor, I saved before each BD fight and loaded the save if things went really sideways, as I found it faster than throwing myself at a tough enemy over and over. This fits perfectly into the rest of the gameplay and setting, as BDs are punishing and brutal, but can be beaten if you’re willing to fight unfairly and exploit their predictability

So I think the game is saying "if you justify all the evil things you've done in your life you'll end up a fascist" but it says that by using the trappings of Bio1. So instead of going into Columbia and immediately getting a valid question "is a man not entitled to the sweat on his brow?" Instead, you see that Columbia is already rotten to the core, and you don't fully understand who this Comstock guy is. The reveal that it's Booker is to say "see! You could so easily also become fascist dictator if you lied to yourself that all the murders you do are good!" (A very relatable premise) But essentially, this isn't a teardown of the concept of fascism the way that B1 is a teardown of objectivism, because hopefully, there's no reason to. On the face of it, fascism is evil. It's too obvious to refute. Infinite is more about saying "how close are you to betraying everything good and believing lies of superiority and violence?" And it does that through the Booker/Comstock/Elizabeth dynamic

The choice of saving or sacrificing little sisters would have been far more compelling if it actually COST you Adam to save them.
@someguy198
@someguy198 Жыл бұрын
This wouldn't really be possible gameplay wise. In this instance, one way to play, the proper way, is by restricting gameplay as much as possible. Being stuck with electokinesis and telekinesis for the entire game. Which would be boring. And if you still gave them plasmids the direction still doesn't matter. Also balancing would be an absolute pleasure to fullfil properly.

Would be horrible for game balance. Think for one second, they would need to make it possible to complete with few to no plasmids, and also make the upgrades less of a choice so you have a chance of obtaining them without killing little sisters; it would be interesting for a challenge mode, but would absolutely ruin the flow and feel of the game.

@Hung Low I really like infinite, i replayed it 4 times. The main reason (atleast i think why) why so many people including me like the game is because it doesn't really give the player time to think. you don't ask questions because you are to distracted by things happening around you, like setpieces, reality hopping and many combat encounters. And yes I enjoyed it because it didn't get semmy for me, but the people who can see past all the distractions will see a very messy gameplot with some glarring plot-holes. The poor things are hidden really well because of all the "smoke and mirrors" serounding it.
