I got an MD after 11 years & found the civvie transition to be difficult, as that wasn’t what I wanted. As you said, the army gives you a “can do” attitude. Having been a team player, the thing I found really difficult to deal with as a civvie was the often encountered “minimum effort to get by” approach from many colleagues, that seem happy to let others take the strain on their behalf. I needed a change, so moved to Florida with my wife & daughter to buy a business. We’re still here 16 years later, & life is pretty good. Good luck with your future, I’m sure you’ll do well.

Congratulations mate! I only discovered your channel toward the end of my time in the green, but I actually took a very similar journey to yourself - joined in my early 20s with the express goal of becoming an Infantry Platoon Commander, ended up having a sick time doing it, and then promptly left at the end of my service obligation to go and pursue the next adventure. It's great to see that there are others out there with a similar mentality who still fondly look back on their time in the service, and I definitely echo your encouragement for anyone thinking about it to throw their hat in the ring and join. Great videos mate, and best of luck on your future ventures!

Just watched this and there's an awful lot parallels between your path and the one I took. I used all of my "youth" from 17 to 24 and made the same decision to leave as I'd lost the passion for the role despite being born and bread in green. It was touch and go in the first 18 months where my own mental resilience was tested to the limit. Now - 20 years on (left in 02) things are peachy. Happy to discuss and advise.

I joined the Army as a JL at 16. Best thing I ever did. The skills I learned have stood me in good stead and the friends I made while serving are still friends today. You never totally fit in to civvy street again. You'll never be a civvy, instead you become a veteran, which is very different. You'll notice much more self interest and individualism in civvy street and less resilience amongst your civilian peers too, which I still find hard to come to terms with. Having said that, it's not all bad and the money is certainly better. I used all the skills I'd learned in the Army to go on to become a socio-cultural anthropologist. I wrote my thesis on how civilians are turned into soldiers and how their identity is changed in the process of militarisation. I now work in the corporate world teaching business leaders how to understand people and their behaviours using the knowledge I gained in the military and at Uni. Best of luck on your future endeavours. Certa Cito

I was one of the first to leave, along with Scottish Spruce etc because I just wasn’t ready. I did enjoy the time I was there for, and I did regret it a little after leaving in August I am looking to rejoin in the near future. That being said, I felt lucky to have met such an amazing officer like yourself and I’ve enjoyed watching the rest of what would’ve been my platoon make it through training and the rest of your journey thereafter. Hey mate, now that you are leaving the Army have you considered trying to branch out and contact other influencers? Granted a difficult but huge audience would be Joe Rogan. You have real world, recent experience that could be interesting on his podcast and you wouldn’t be tied to the various rules and regulations of the Army

@@djrxp Gary, just a little thought for you mate. Just because someone signs the dotted line, doesn't then mean they have to commit 22 years service. I'm still serving in the infantry and have been in for 18 years now, but I know many people that served the minimum and then move onto bigger better things. Why not use the military as a stepping stone. Just because Dan served 6 years and is leaving, doesn't automatically mean that he hates the Army and shouldn't promote it. You do realise by making a comment like that, you're portraying someone who hasn't had the best of time in the military. All the best Gary :)

I'd have preferred an officer who'd served as a soldier or wasn't a uni buff. Every uni buff I had was a complete tool, all the other officers I had were like actual lads and I wanted to help and eventually work for. The uni buffs not once thought the soldiers could teach them anything which ended in them not being liked.

Basically what happened was you were not good enough to become a company commander and you decided to quit and seek a career outside of the army rather than become a 50 year old silver haired captain in charge of a toilet paper resupply centre in some forlorn base up north. You should have realised in advance that you can be a complete dunce but if you come from the right family background you can make major general by the time you are 50 years old, the army is still the place for the privileged classes & not for the peasants.

Short term commission, taking, giving little, living on I was a commissioned officer. Yes is dependant but, short term commission give very very little, often the worst officers or. failures. No matter the opinion, if you only short term commission you can have no respect or commitment to your guys or?
