15:43 this article is right… there is NO comparison between *Castlevania: Symphony of the Night* to ANY other game, 3D or not. *Symphony of the Night* is one of the all-time greatest games ever made! I remember beating it and being both excited and disappointed. I just wanted more of the game. Thankfully, someone told me to put on the right glasses/goggles while fighting the end boss. I did it, and beat it again. Suddenly the map was blank and the entire castle was flipped over with much harder enemies. I couldn’t believe that I was able to experience the thrill of exploration and power ups one more time! I remember when this came out in 1997, it was neck and neck with Final Fantasy VII and Goldeneye for game of the year. I STILL can’t decide which of these 3 gems is best.
@Hynotama29 күн бұрын
And you know what? There shouldn’t be a comparison between SOTN and other games. SOTN does some things better than other games and other games do some things better than SOTN, like writing and voice acting, for example… a lot better actually. Or not using literal asset flips to pad out the game.

@@oldschoolm8 True some games of the N64 era hasn't aged well. Since this was the early era of 3D games. It was uncharted territory for many game developers before they finally refined it to what modern games are now. Though some N64 games remain major classics of this 90s game console. Like Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and many other games of my and other childhood in the 90s and early 2000s.
@natsume-hime24733 жыл бұрын
@@RedWolf777SG Even those games haven't exactly aged well. The basically unchanged port of Super Mario 64 in the Super Mario 3D All Stars pack shows this painfully well. Especially when compared to the likes of the updated and imporved 3DS ports of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Star Fox 64. Mario Kart 64 simply doesn't stand up to later entries. Especially Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 7, and especially Mario Kart 8. I think it's time to take the nostalgia glasses off. You can still love the games, but let's be honest here. Early 3D has aged like milk, even the almost timeless Half-Life hasn't aged great. 2D though tends to age much better, which is why SOTN is a truly timeless classic of a game.

Igarashi was at least assistant director on SOTN, as well as the lead Scenario Writer and oversaw the level design of the game. Obviously Hagihara deserves at least as much credit for the story, characters, and overall design of the game, though. Though on that note, in most of the other Castlevania Iga was much like Miyamoto in Mario and Zelda games after 1997 - Producer, with mainly an advisory role rather than actually calling the shots.

SOTN is the first ARPG in my opinion. Back when it came out, RPG's were turn based, had HP, a leveling system and attributes (dex, str, etcetera). Action games had life bars, leveling systems and very minimal stats but had more moment-to-moment movements and attacks. Period. That was the lay of the land. SOTN was the first game that really did it all. It was an action game that incorporated attributes, a numbered leveling sytem and all the exploration of an RPG. It ALSO was one of the first games, that I'm aware of, that included an RNG loot system (Diablo was also released in 1997). On top of all of that, they added Street Fighter-style controller motions to cast spells. All of these mechanics are super common now but, in 1997, they were each unique to specific games or genres. To see them all come together in one game was overwhelming and unforgettable.
@megavolt673 жыл бұрын
There were plenty of action RPGs before SOTN. And the vast majority of action games did not have leveling systems in those days. SOTN was interesting because it shifted Castlevania away from the linear platforming style and towards Metroid style non linear exploration. It was indeed a jack of a trades sort of deal that also had RPG-like skill progression, but it's not the first ARPG by a long shot. Not even the first one with leveling or attributes (I don't know if it's the first, but Zelda 2 did those way back in 1987, ten years before SOTN). As for the loot, it's not different from most JRPGs, where enemies can drop normal items or rare items. You have different odds of getting different items but what those items are is predetermined. Crissaegrim is Crissaegrim. There's no legendary Crissaegrim or Crissaegrim +1.
@anubrakahn29703 жыл бұрын
@@megavolt67 When we played Zelda 2 and Metroid back in the 80s, they were action games. Final Fantasy and Dragons Quest were RPG'S. That's how it was. If you tried to argue that it was an RPG, you'd get laughed off the playground. We can retroactively determine that Zelda 2 was an ARPG because it has an experience point system but its other RPG elements, such as its 3 attributes, were too lacking at the time for anyone to confuse it with an RPG. I'm not sure what other games can compare. You mentioned plenty but I can't think of any. SOTN was the 1st game to blend the 2 in such a way that people didn't know if they should call it an action game or an RPG. It's the 1st game that I remember being called an ARPG when it was released. Yes, different odds of getting different things as drops is RNG. There is no plus 1 or legendary requirement for a Random Number Generator to do its thing. Those are some implementations that have evolved over time, sure, but the ability to have equipment drop randomly from defeated enemies was a very new mechanic and one that is super common in the genre today.
@ManiacalForeigner2 жыл бұрын
I could not possibly disagree more about Harmony of Dissonance's soundtrack (which you mixed up with Harmony of Despair when discussing it). Sure, the sound quality/fidelity is quite low because of how rushed the game was and how much room on the cartridge was taken up by the graphics. However, the music itself, from a compositional standpoint is nothing short of brilliant - unique, prog/jazz/baroque inspired chord progressions and rhythms, perfectly befitting the "Dissonance" of the English title. It perfectly underscores the feeling of traversing a domain of vampiric chaos. Shame that so many people can't look past the technical limitations.

Although the visuals and environments were definitely polished; it blended in a lot of that extra, separate style that Super Castlevania IV and Symphony of the Night had, which was pretty cool. Aside from that, I thought it was pretty inferior (with respect to Castlevania games, of course; that's a pretty high bar, in the game's defense). Also, I loved Lords of Shadow. Well that was fabulous. Well done sir, but I'm telling your right now, as soon as that Pilotwings music hit at the end there and I saw that title card you made up, I'm every bit as excited for your next Complete History video.

16:25 I was lucky to buy the Requiem collection at limited run games at the time because honestly I never got the chance to play symphony of the night on ps1. Also slopes I know you're a fan of Iga but have you played bloodstained ritual of the night and curse of the moon? I would definitely recommend playing thisr as well

Great doc from the point of view of a lover of the series. Bloodstained is epic, by the way.

25:05 you mean Harmony of dissonance? Harmony of Despair is the arcade-style one that released on the Xbox 360. I'm right in the middle of watching the video now so you will probably bring it up later but I just noticed that. Granted, they do have very similar names

I've been a die hard fan of the series since I got the original in 1987 and I can tell you this documentary is very accurate. I did cringe a little while watching the opening of sealed games since there are only a finite number of those still around. I would like to contribute a couple of of fun facts: 1. Although the name "Castlevania" was first used as a title in Japan for Harmony of Dissonance, it was actually used before that in the Akumajo Dracula Sharp X68000 game's user manual. In the middle of the manual it refers to it as "Castle Vania". 2. The photo used on the cover of Symphony of the Night is a picuture of the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey in France.

51:01 "It's time to take that absurdly complicated story that's been building up over the last 20-plus years, a story that IGA himself has personally approved to be a part of the original Castlevania canon or not with every single release... And bury it deep." Sadly, this could be said of a lot of great franchises that continue on long after the original team has all left. "What? There's a story? Bugger that, time for a reboot remade in MY way. No one cares if the older generation likes it, I'm here to cater to the young and the hip. Wait.. What's with this retro revival.. Why are the younger and hipper people playing the older games? No, you should play my new fresh version!"

A little late to the party but its the wrong Castlevania 2 logo at 10:57 Holy Balls! I just realized its Whang! doing the voiceover for Iga and had to check the summary to be sure. Right on!

Castlevania 64 had issues with its development. The game that followed isn't a remake, a reimagining, or a sequel, it is an apology to Castlevania fans who were dissappointed with the first N64 game. When one makes a "complete history of" video, maybe then don't skip parts of said history, because then it doesn't feel complete. Talk about development issues, challenges, the original scope of the game and what had been cut off and the reasons for it being cut off. CV64's "what happened" video series gives more info on its development cycle and why the subsequent game was made. Comprehensive? Yes. Complete? Debatable. It is complete to me because it shows most games in the franchise and their variations. I just feel it incomplete because it spends time with the reviewer experience with the games rather than give an unbiased opinion of the games and why it might have been an issue.

Great video but I got to ask is there a complete collection out there for the Lord's of shadow cuz like there are so many versions of that I wonder if there's one for Xbox 360

Before LoS2's release, there was a LoS 1 with dlc included + Mirror of Fate. However LoS2 does have dlc, it was made separate.

Never played Castlevania 64, but the footage is giving me flashbacks to King's Quest: Mask of Eternity, which I tried to convince myself I liked for several months after it was first released.

SOTN is a serious contender for my favorite game of all time! I really enjoyed the Soma Cruz games and the souls mechanic. Being able to replay with most of the souls you collected from the previous playthrough is a lot of fun.

25:50 My introduction to the series! =D I love this game! But its sequel won me over even more... Anyway... this had physical games and paraphernalia, unboxings, breathtaking gameplay videos and screenshots (I wish it had cut a bit on the final boss department to avoid spoilers but ehhh...), DJ Slopes (=P) and most importantly such a fun amount of edutainment that I love about these documentaries. Thanks so much for this over two hour cinematic history preservation gem!

Funny to be catching Erin here. Hopefully, after your awesome retrospective, Erin will finally give a try to the DS Castlevania games, despite the Metroidvanianess of them haha. Great video, Castlevania is a huge part of my gaming life, and the incredible amout of work you put in these two great videos makes me feel there is a reason for that... Castlevania is just amazing.

I remember doing something similar back then too.... can't remember the shop, but I loved the cover artwork style, but saw the 2D screenshots on the back and was disappointed that it wasn't true 3D...!! Idiot that I was....! :-D No problem though, I can always get a copy now for a mere £200 +...!! NOT!

Bit of a mistake at 25:05 Harmony of Dissonance is the titile. Harmony of Despair was the multiplayer game on PSN and Xbox Store. A lot of people make this mistake so all good!
