The misses and I finally have found a new home, with a basement of course! In a couple months when I begin construction, and of course in between what rest and time I get off between pool runs (you know all about that DJ....) I'm considering just using 2" foam and bypassing the wood base. I figure if I need a solid surface below the foam somewhere, I could just hot glue some thick styrene under the foam at the opening. What's your opinion Dj? Anyone else?
@SuperRedTails
@SuperRedTails 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, after using plywood and homisode, then 2" foam by it self, In hind sight I would use 1" foam on top of 3/8th plywood as the base. Maybe the best of both worlds!? Scott

I lay track but dont ballast it, then just lay down 1" blue masking tape over the track and the area that will be ballested, works perfect to protect track while working around it. I need to do it reverse as I have never layed track or run trains before, if I had made the layout I imagined first it would have been a disaster, nothing would have run well, derailing and struggling up grades and way to tight of curvature. I made a whole layout in cardboard and foam and other scrap materials. Then saw what worked running trains, and built sections of wood permanent benchwork and layout as I confirmed each section functioned correctly. I am new to model railroading but have professional training and experience in prototype model making for industrial design, so I went with the methods I was familiar with.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING DJ! You make it look so easy and w little effort. I'm sold on using the casting material when I finally get to work on mine! The scenery w the trees, grass etc looks great! The grain facility you have, what make is it? I've drawn my layout on a sketch pad and I've chosen a GRAIN MILL and a CEMENT COMPANY so far. I think I want 1 more but have to narrow my choices. Once again, great job and thanks for sharing your videos as always DJ!

Can I ask how you deal with wiring the track after doing all the scenic work? That's a great video and very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
@djstrains
@djstrains 5 жыл бұрын
I drilled a hole for feeder wires before I glued the mainline down. Since the plywood was so thin, and the foam was only an inch thick, it wasn't hard to fish them through.

DJ I wish you were my neighbor to help me get my layout started. I am overwhelmed with where or how to begin. I have no standing track plan which would help me tremendously yet even with the plan I simply do not know where or how to even begin designing a track plan. I never thought I would have all the supplies on hand to begin but not knowing how to begin....

Nearly all our POWERED switches (dispatcher controlled) in my area have a heater to keep them from freezing on days like today. The MOW guys keep them maintained. I'm not sure if I have footage in one of my videos, but I'll look into showing it in a video someday, thanks.

@@62ejo fwiw - "back in the day" when I was working for CN Signals, I was installing the new-at-the-time CTC (Centralized Track Control) system at all the sidings west of Edmonton to Jasper and beyond. Part of this included installing switch heaters. Some sidings used propane-fuel heaters while others were oil-fuled, so there had to be appropriate fuel-storage tanks at the sites as well and access roads for delivery trucks to get to them. Basically the heaters were just some plumbed in 'jets' mounted along the outsides of the rails. These jets were covered with sheet-metal tops to keep out dirt and debris and concentrate the heat onto the outsides of the rails. Are you going to model some of these on your layout? Cheers.
