In America, I think the cult/religious fringe group would be the equivalent of what some people call "Holy Rollers", they speak in tongues (or something) and kind of spasm around, sometimes landing on the floor in the process (hence the "Roller" part). That, or like the group that made the phrase "Drink the Kool-aid" famous for all the worst reasons (especially with the so called prophet guy leading them). I'm Catholic(-ish) so... yea, that's just the best assessment I have. Honestly, the domino effect from Voldemort is looking messed up, especially the global economy. David. I completely understand where ur coming from in the sense that their r many different aspects which makes u kpop n those r the fandom chants the industry and finally the concept of kpop itself however BTS has managed to carve themselves out of that label and made a better one which they like to say as the genre is themselves and the idea that music has no language n such overall basically bts is not kpop cuz yes it’s a culture on it’s own but not one where u get beheaded if u say u ain’t part of it or lower ur self to that level their way above it their just korean are kpop is basically KOREAN POP however bts managed to give us other genres such as hip hop rnb/soul edm trap n many more if music transcends why should it be limited down to just kpop - also the aspects that make kpop other non kpop artists have fan chants such not one that sounds like a ritual like if u have been to a ariana grande concert u still here fan chants it’s not a completely foreign it happens so the things that make kpop isn’t as original except the way the agency pack the Albums n such that’s a lil different to western artist finally i though we all agreed that BigHit ent is Completely out of the kpop industry the kpop industry is known for its corruption and dirt BigHit ent has rid themselves of that so therefore their just a korean Label with korean artists that make different genres of music that isn’t kpop us ARMys believe by just limiting bts to JUST KPOP prevents opportunities n such for us like people look at bts as just another kpop group but it’s not like that if other kpop artists want to rid themselves of that label aswell then they too have to work 10x as hard aswell💜

Kpop, pop... whatever, they’re just labels. But Suga is correct, the labels are becoming meaningless. Labels serve only to restrict a person’s thinking, and if listeners take these genre labels to heart, then it can restrict one’s thinking and receptiveness. BTS or any group or any artist are themselves and pigeonholing people does everyone, artist and listener all a disservice
@muycaliente61964 жыл бұрын
Very well said! Especially since many groups use rock, classical music and rap and mix it up, therefore labeling such music as pop or kpop is technically incorrect
@meral_k4 жыл бұрын
@Muy Caliente it's not really incorrect since it's all popular music, I think. It doesn't matter whether it's rock, hiphop or whatever, as long as it's popular. But pop music is definitely not a musical genre and kpop, I would say, is also primarily a business, especially with the trainee system and so on. But I definitely agree, in the end it doesn't matter what name it is, music is music and as long as we enjoy it, everything's fine :)
@1obsessionafteranother7944 жыл бұрын
Patrick I see your point. Perhaps I was too vehement in my assertions. Absolutely some artists change the definition of a genre label. But I do still think that listeners can allow their preconceptions of genres to affect their receptiveness towards a genre that they may not ordinarily listen to.
@meral_k4 жыл бұрын
1obsessionafteranother that’s true! On the one hand, labels allow you to navigate through the vast landscape of music to find something that suits your tastes. But on the other hand, as you said, it might be deterrent to people who already have a set view of a specific genre and therefore holds them back from trying out new music. So I guess labels aren’t entirely bad but also not entirely good.

NOT calling BTS kpop is actually important. Because when BTS achieves something, the media calls it "kpop making waves" or "kpop making achievements", not BTS. That is why what Yoongi said is important. He wants artists themselves to be recognized. Like, BTS is just BTS. IU is IU, not some "another kpop girl". We want BTS to be acknowledged as BTS. I think Suga put it well during their Grammy museum interview... Kpop isnt just a music genre it is an experience. “I’m a little bit wary of that but I think rather than approach Kpop as a genre, a better approach would be ‘integrated content." "K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.”

Umla Exactly. BTS follows many of the hallmarks associated with kpop...the visuals, the choreography, the fan culture, the lightsticks, and on and on. It would be silly to totally separate them. But just like he says that’s totally different from musical genre labels which are not holding much significance world wide let alone with an artist as experimental and broadly talented as BTS. They don’t need genre labels they are doing their own thing and absolutely killing it.
@IlloyedKater4 жыл бұрын
I do think you can label it as a sub genre. Not “music” wise, but entertainment wise. Punk, Goth, Emo or Rock for instance also had their respective added elements. Music isn’t just music for quite some time, there are lifestyles attached to it. I also think calling it k-entertainment might be a better way to put it, for there are genres with in it. I think we should always watch out for the artists first and then for the genre. To find things that are similar or understand the subculture (we love your explanation videos).

Bighit is also extending the brand BTS with the movie/series that is supposed to be released and I am pretty sure it’ll feel more like a k-drama than a drama form the US. Even the supporting music will be different.

I respectfully disagree because I think it's definitely a result of colourism. If you look at EXP edition or Lana, it's definite proof that if you're white, you can make in it K-pop. Why else do tanner idols get bullied? Why is whitewash so prevalent and normalised? Lana wasn't very talented. Sorry, but she's mediocre in most skills. Stage prescence, vocal and dance all rank lower than trainees. And she got all that attention for what reason? She's white. If she was Korean, she'd never even be taken as a trainee. Now, Lee Michelle. In my opinion, she's Korean. However, she just had to be black. And yet, she's a Korean citizen, having never met her father, speaking only Korean and growing up without knowing any English. She was on an audition programme and if you look at her song "Without You" on KZbin, she's clearly more talented than Lana. She received hate from all over because of her skin colour and was cut from the show and didn't win. Why am I doing this? Hold on. And now we look at trainees. These people work their hardest, people as young as eleven (or eight if you were Jihyo) and their schedules mean they're awake most of the time, practising, or at school. These people train for years. We know how hard they work. It wears them down mentally sometimes, to devastating effects. And once they debut, if they do, they're often shoved out of the spotlight because fans want to vote for their faves and companies usually ruin promotions for idols so fans won't even know they exist. My example here is Cross Gene. AMUSE KOREA is a textbook example of disallowing their idols the chance to achieve. J. Tune Camp is guilty of this too! However, if a white person shows up, they won't be in need of that hard work. People fawn over them already. They'll be prioritised and people who work so hard, people like Lee Michelle, or any idol or trainee will be overlooked. The standards are terrifying and fierce. This is why I disagree to an _extent._ Of course people want to look at Asians. 'Tis a fetish. But we have to look at all the possible ways, you know?

Here are my two cents about this whole "Is it k-pop or not?" debate. What happened to BTS' music is something that happened to all hardworking artists at some point in their career - they became their own genre. This often happens to artists that are not afraid to experiment with different musical genres, often mixing a few of them, but they stay true to their message, to what they try to convey. Take a look at Queen - if you were to put a single genre on their music, it would be rock. However, they often mixed opera and classical music with their sound. This leads to the listener being able to instantly recognize the artist even if they haven't heard some particular song. The same goes for The Beatles, for Jenis Joplin, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, etc. There are artists in my country who perform for a very long time and you can say they are their own genre of music. Mind you, Korea has great artists who are their own genre, they aren't as popular as BTS, but are labelled only as k-pop. Just look at Mamamoo, BOL4, Day6, Dreamcatcher, etc. As soon as I hear a few beats of their songs, I immediately know who it is. Now, about the girl group. I think that the main issue here is that the company tries to advertise them as k-pop, when they should take advantage of the fact that they have different ethnicities. There is nothing wrong with saying they were inspired by k-pop. To me, k-pop is something that originated in Korea. I hope this Swiss company allows those girls to sing in their own languages. Imagine a song by them where you can hear Spanish, Italian, Korean and Chinese (and English). Now, that would be a much better way to pull in the audience. Just look at some multilingual collaborations where you have 3 languages: J-Hope and Becky G, Super Junior and Leslie Grace... Those songs sound amazing and they simply celebrate music regardless of skin colour or language that is spoken. Music is a universal language that all of us can understand and enjoy. Stay safe during the outbreak of CV, I wish you all the best. ☺️☺️☺️

People like certain types of music and without genres, it will be hard to locate songs like metal or alternative if the artists labels their music "(insert artist's name) + (genre)" 2. How about award shows? They can't just award people with AOTY, SOTY, and artists of the year. That is wayyyyy too vague. Genres are needed to award a song that had the best influence in its respected genre. If BTS says "BTS is the genre, don't place us any other genre!" (which is not what they actually said) then Suga won't be able to achieve his goal in life: winning a Grammy. All I want the Western society to do is to put kpop artists' music in their respected genres without adding the prefix "k-." So I believe genres are still very relevant but I need the Western music industry to stop making it exclusive; kpop, krnb, k-rock, k-indie, and etc. is literally pop, rnb, rock, indie music and etc. but sang in Korean. Oh and I respect Suga's opinion though, so no shade to him.

The term “kpop” has come to have a lot of restrictions and barriers. It’s like the rules of what is or isn’t kpop is more important then the actual quality of the music and I think that is the real issue here. BTS make music for their fans and for themselves, not to fit an established mold. And it’s okay if there are groups who fit into this mold but lumping everyone together can get infuriating cause really unique groups become overshadowed or dismissed simply because their songs are in Korean and as musicians that can be frustrating. And this isn’t even a kpop only debate. The Australian group 5SOS struggled during their early years because they kept being referred to as a “boy group” since they were all boys who sang. But they viewed themselves as a band. The “boy group” label wasn’t necessarily bad but it forced a persona on them that they didn’t feel represented them. Music should be freeing but labels often restrain groups more than anything.

Labeling music has always been stupid and futile. There is no pure genre. Rap and R&B intersect with pop, which intersects with country, which intersects with classic rock, which intersects with rap. So on and so on. You can argue that there is a certain culture that surrounds each type of music but, as far as the music itself goes, they all overlap and borrow elements from each other. I wouldn't be surprised if more western artists started upping their choreography game at shows, thanks to Kpop's rise in popularity. Why can't we just appreciate the fact that there are talented people on the world who work hard to share their art with the rest of us, without trying to shove them into some clearly labeled box?

I do think BTS' music has matured beyond K-pop now, and this new album just shows their musical diversity. I think they've been able to infuse so many different genres into one great album to precisely express who they are without limiting themselves to a particular sound.
@denzelwenzel4 жыл бұрын
I mean...other groups have done what you just described. To say they have matured beyond k-pop, you would first have to be able to define k-pop.Then specify in which ways BTS now differ, and then argue why these differences are fundamental enough to label them differently...or just do whatever yiou want, im not your boss. I dont really care that much about this whole label thing, tho i am interested in the ways people who care a bit more, discuss it
@moonchild99924 жыл бұрын
@@denzelwenzel Thanks for the reply, I'm always open for discussion. My definition of k-pop refers to the bubble-gum pop type of songs with easy sing-a-long lyrics and a poppy beat, nothing deeper than what you see at face value which makes the music enjoyable but also easily disposable. Yes, I know it's all been done by many groups and that's great! Like I said, we shouldn't put limitations to those who want to creatively express themselves and explore other sounds. As For BTS, they've always been experimental and you'll find elements of African, Latin, pop, hip-hop, EDM, RnB, etc influences in their music. What makes them different? I can't put my finger on it either, but their music has a way of affecting people and pulls at all the different heartstrings. My point was that all artists don't need to be limited to a specific genre, at the end of the day good music is good music if the listener thinks so. But if you want to call BTS K-Pop then by all means, it doesn't effect me.

That's interesting because I've never really listened to BTS apart from Blood sweat and tears that I really like but I listened to the album to know what the fuss was all about and I do think they're different from what we're used to hear in Kpop in general. I don't know what it used to be like when they debuted but in this album, there's definitely a western sound to it, can't remember the titles but some tracks are really like Trap and it's very processed with heavy autotune. Autotune is obviously a stylistic choice, I'm not a fan personally I think it's too present and I prefer simple sounds and hearing the actual voices and harmonies. I'm sure their lives are good but I haven't checked yet. Anyways the production is really hip-hop/EDM which is something I'm more used to in Western music. Even Bigbang oldies that were very hip-hop, or GDs' Heartbreaker for example where it's like 100% autotuned or Ateez where there's a lot of electronic sound, we can still hear something very Kpop-ish. I don't consider Kpop a genre in itself, it's a whole package: the group, the variety skills, the choreos, make up, outfits, the fandom ofc, idol culture is culturally very different from the US for example. So BTS is definitely a Kpop band but I get what people are saying about their music sort of getting further away from the usual Kpop style that we can hear in other groups. Not saying all kpop groups sound the same but coming from the same country and having those stricts ent. agency rules, we can't help but hear the influence behind the production. (I;m not an expert in any means that's my view)

BTS sings in Korean their mainstream genre is pop, they debuted as a k-pop group and they take pride in being one.
@danellymani2054 жыл бұрын
Lucypher I would say their mainstream genre is hip hop. They have always said their basis is hip hop and that hasn't changed. Pop doesn't normally have rap breaks. I don't know why all of a sudden because American western music pop all has rap that it's now considered pop. Nope. That's hip hop. Pop is Taylor swift or Selena Gomez. If you can look at their full albums it's mostly hip hop. To be honest I have not checked the latest album though so that could be more pop. But their past work for sure is majority hip hop. They remind me of Ciara who is undoubtedly hip hop. Again I'm not talking about just their title tracks but their entire albums. Also like to add that yes they are Kpop and Kpop is a mash of hip hop, rap, Edm and pop. But they lean more heavily on the hip pop genre to me.
@butt3rflymtherese4 жыл бұрын
Lucypher BTS debuted as a hip hop group until I think around 2014 or 2015 their CEO decided to change it to idol group but still keep the same genre as today and that hasn’t changed. They have learned hip hop culture from American Hustle Life. Their album is more like hip hop, R&B type because there’s rap tracks, rap breaks, pop & soul vibes. Music is music. All it takes for people like us who enjoy music.

Music contains Joy, sadness, fear defeat, triumph, love, hope, and healing. It can convey so much more than our words could label. How can you define it as one thing. It transcends. After you strip everything away, the music is what remains. Their roots are in Kpop. They absolutely continue to keep the culture of their industry alive and use it to their advantage. If that makes them kpop then yes they are kpop. What's the problem? Although BTS has expanded their sound and type of audience they reach, it doesn't mean they are better than kpop or above other kpop groups. There message is to fight for your dream and BE. LOVE. I doubt they would want to be used to embarrass groups and stigmatize them. BTS has lit a fire and opened a path for other amazing artists to be recognized and thrive. It's become clear that their is so much amazing talent in Korea that deserves to be acknowledged. It's a shame that people attempt to push it all together as one "genre". Music genres serve a purpose to help individuals find "similar sounding" music to enjoy. Never was it said that genres should confine groups into being only one thing or not developing a new sound or feelings to express. It's so hard sometimes to just to carry on. To breath...BTS is a force, a feeling. Please embrace that they make you feel anything at all. They started like any other "kpop" group and have grown into something so much more. BTS is music AND a movement. They shine inspiration on not only ARMY, but other artists Korean and non Korean alike. I feel that when people latch onto the discussion of if BTS is Kpop or not they're missing the bigger picture and they are doing a huge disservice to BTS and themselves. Kpop, not Kpop, it doesn’t really matter. When the music surrounds you, what do you feel?

FYI Sweden brought us ABBA in the 70's which was a pop supergroup with many hits such as Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, Waterloo and Fernando. They were huge worldwide stars on a scale similar to BTS.

BTS is kpop and that isn't a bad thing at all. They're also doing their own thing and just enjoying themselves, who cares at the end of the day. Anyone that gets triggered about such a thing need to get a life. Also whoever sees kpop as something negative or "inferior" need to solve their own issues, what are you doing being so pressed about a music genre? Get out there enjoy life, listen to something else if you personally don't like it, but live your life and let others live theirs in peace.

i know it might not be related, but hearing the whole "is bts kpop" debate reminds me of what tyler the creator said at the grammys when he won a grammy. idk why but this whole music labeling thing has become more complicated than it ever was (whether it's good or bad)

I thought the term "kpop" was a little strange, I believed it was just a xenophobic label, because American pop music was just called "pop", however after thinking about it, there is a big difference between "kpop" and "apop" (as they call it today). kpop has the choreography, the clothes, the rules, the terms, the concept, something that Yoongi has even explained, so categorizing artists in kpop is not a bad thing, it just mean that they are part of a category more artistic (although it suffers a lot of discrimination)

exactly kpop is a lot more than just music

Who the hell is calling western pop music apop? There's artists from the entire English and Spanish speaking world in our industry. Calling it apop would be stupid.

Americans did that in the past and that didn't last... But the Korean saw it and it still going. Korea was able to manage the group concept along with the dancing, rules, concept. and etc.

@jay jay Kpop is a culture. Western pop is an industry. People bring their own cultures into it.
