If you think of the grand prize standard being Michael Jackson. BTS is far behind. They have fans, views, sales. But their song playback is still behind being the greats. Ask someone out in the street in the Americas/Europe if they listened to BTS consistently. Now ask someone if they've listened to Michael Jackson. Also showing proof is their World Tour, BTS sold 1.04M Tickets. BIGBANG sold 1.5M Tickets. Michael Jackson, over 2.8M back in 1984 when he won the Grammy. There's a big difference between having alot of fans vs having everyone love your music. Tbh if you want to win a grammy you have to be successful enough to sell a 1M capacity crowd. and with kpop is roughly a 400K crowd at most, only PSY has been able to reach those high number attendance but nowhere near a million.
@luramey5 жыл бұрын
Dbo on ma back that maybe true. but if you look at the nominees this year, did anyone have met those criterias? maybe only on the song playback. you have to admit that there’s a disparity in how they were perceived. most of us are not saying they should win, a nomination would have been enough, especially with everything they did this year. they brought such a HUGE cultural impact and people actually KNOW them. not everyone sure, but a lot of non-kpop fans do. and as fan, you can’t really blame us for being disappointed. their music speaks for itself too. we’re not here fighting for them blindly without basis. their performance and concerts are out of this world as well, if you’ve ever been to one. also what with grammys constant hyping up of them recently, inviting them to the RA, asking them to present at the grammys, displaying their outfits in their museum and so forth. so do forgive us for expecting something.

I’m iARMY and I love BTS but honestly, every Korean should be proud of BTS. They have showed a sense of character and integrity that has earned the respect of millions including fans, media, industry and general public. Yes, they are facing racism and discrimination and xenophobia but they are doing so with a sense of purpose without sacrificing who they are and that is reflective of them and their culture. It is very difficult being the first, because you take the hits so that others won’t have to. It’s not easy, but one day it will be easier for world artists to be recognized because BTS is going thorough this now and not letting it stop them. I’ve seen it over and over again, sometimes the person at the front of a movement never gets recognized but that doesn’t diminish their impact. I’m African American and I know it’s not easy to stand in the face racism or bigotry and give it your best but still be looked over. But BTS is willing to do that and they are showing a resilience that speaks volumes about their characters. This willingness to take the hard road is why BTS will be remembered as one of the greatest.

Pretty sure most artists would like a grammy on their shelf too. But grammys aren't popularity contests like every other award show is, so being best selling, most popular, highest rated, biggest fandom, biggest tour , etc etc in the world means crap to the grammy voters. it's peer voted and subjective to those peers tastes in music. so maybe one day eventually they will get nominated if they still care about it but i'm not holding my breath on that. awards are just icing...they should just keep on doing what they're doing and not worry about it. and neither should ARMY.

When it comes to Amber, I also don't think she deserves all the hate she's getting rn. She does deserve backlash and being called out, of course, but as Danny said, she doesn't have a history of that, has never really done anything wrong as far as I remember and everyone makes mistakes. Of course no one can force anyone to accept her apology, but I think people should at least acknowledge that she's trying. She admits it's her fault, she knows she fcked up and that she has to deal with the consequences and she wants to educate herself. That's more than other artists/public figures do/did. Also yes, she did grow up in the US, but living abroad for so long can definitely influence how much you know about the situation in the other country. even if you visit there sometimes and have friends there. I've been abroad for only one year and I missed like half the news of what's going on at home. Also most of the news of police violence that is happening in the US doesn't make it into our news either (I'm from Europe), I mostly get all this online, from twitter or so. So her not knowing how bad the situation actually is does kinda make sense. So...in conclusion: calling her out, yes. Constantly sending her insults and even death threats etc., big nope from me.
@ladeeowl4 жыл бұрын
the fact that she thought that was ok after seeing the video is the issue here, also she has said some questionable things in the past which colors how we view this slip of the tongue. No one deserves to be singled out and harrassed so irrespective of race, that was wrong and should not be acceptable to anyone periodt! She grew up in Cali which is where I too reside and a lot of ppl "believed" that us Black people deserved maltreatment because we did not act in a calm manner or asked a question of an officer but when White folks do the same and worse, it is seen differently so no she does not get a pass from me. You can't accept an apology on our behalf she said this towards Black ppl please respect our feelings as most of kpop copies our art but fail to show us respect or acknowledge our contribution in the industry. THis also goes for Amerika, they too copy us and don't give proper respect and acknowledge that we are the main creators, so no I dont stan her but of course as a mature woman I dont condone bad behavior so would not approve of bashing another human being.
@shiraya3184 жыл бұрын
@@ladeeowl As I said, I can't (and don't want to) force anyone into forgiving her and I'm also not trying to accept her apology on anyones behalf. I just think all the hate she's receiving is too much compared to what she did and also when you look at the fact that she at least tries to educate herself and do better instead of just ignoring what she did and moving on as if nothing happened. You don't have to forgive her or like her, and criticism is always okay. I just don't like constant hate and insults towards someone (except it's for something like murder or rape etc.), but I read from your comment that we agree on that last point :)

First of all, ignorance of the topic is pretty normal. No one talks about it. If i didnt have a compulsory racism class i legit will be ignorant about it. this is going to be an unpoppular opinion, but I don't think MOTS persona deserved a Grammy nomination, it's BTS's weakest work to this date, the Album didn't have the critical acclaim Tear Had & the title track wasn't the worst but it wasn't of Fake Love's or Spring Day's league, The BWL MV didn't match BTS's high artistic standards & it was more of a hollow display of bubblegum pop imagery filled with Easter eggs that only ARMY understand as opposed their far better work in BST or FL MVs where even a non BTS fan can admit the artistry & amazing filmmaking behind it. HOWEVER I do believe that they got snubbed BIG Time in 2018 with Tear, That was an amazing Body of work that was overlooked because they were still new comers to the US, & I'm putting big hopes on MOTS shadow, after all BTS's dark concepts are always Top notch & never disappoint!

This a personal opinion so no one come at me, PLEASE. I already knew BTS would not get a nomination not because I do not think that they did well this year but because this is the Grammys. Sometimes it even takes Amercian artist in their own industry of American music, a long time to get nominated, let alone win one. The arguments of xenophobia or them being racist, I think were a little too extreme. One of my favourite African artist got nominated for a Grammy and if the academy had that kind of agenda, I don't think they would nominate foreign artist at all. Plus I don't think the arguments of BTS having the most album sales or the biggest tour are valid either. Sometimes there are nominees that people have never heard of but that doesn't validate their success or their quality of music. That's why the whole tour and album sales thing is irrelevant. Yes BTS and black pink may be big acts breaking into the American industry but maybe in comparison to the acts who applied and got nominated, they did not match the criteria. Also the categories they applied for are some of the biggest, they are tough to get into for anyone, let allow a foreign artist. Everyone should know by now from previous Grammy noms how this stuff works. In saying this, it doesn't mean that they will never get a nom, but being that the music system is very static, it might take longer than people expect unfortunately.

I feel bad for Amber. She’s coming from a perspective that not a lot of people will be able to identify or understand. When you live as a foreigner in a foreign country you don’t expect the police or anyone else to come out on your side. In a conflict between you and a local, no matter whose at fault, you expect a bias towards the local. Which means that you have to make sure your own behavior, especially regarding the police is exceptional. Amber made a judgement based on her own experience, which doesn’t mean she’s wrong, just very specific. She was ultimately expressing a standard for her own behavior towards a policeman in Korea and judging his behavior against her standard. I’m curious what you think the reaction would be if Amber behaved like this towards a police officer in Korea?
@yasminem.1115 жыл бұрын
I disagree, she's not some kpop artist who was born and raised in Korea and only knows korean culture. She's AMERICAN (and from LA lol) she KNOWS how it works there, and how american police officers have a looooong long history of discriminating black people. And if she actually didn't know, it will be an opportunity for her to learn.
@angellag93735 жыл бұрын
Would the south Korea police, racial profile a black person? Would they single out just one person? while I do not think she is racist, I do believe she has a bias towards this person. The fact that she was not informed on the subject means she does not have a valid opinion, but she chooses to give one anyway.
@dinasourprincessparty5 жыл бұрын
Yasmine M. I’m saying that she put herself into that situation and made a judgement based on her own experiences and standards, a “What would I do?” filter. Living permanently in another country, the immigrant experience is it’s own culture, and it’s been the culture she’s lived in for the past decade. Her filter isn’t wrong, or even inaccurate, it’s just not capable of seeing other filters clearly, which is a problem that exactly everyone has. From the perspective of an immigrant with non-permanent residency in the place that she has made her livelihood, showing disrespect towards a police officer makes her uncomfortable. Now other filters are important to look at too. But, why does her perception have to be wrong, just because it’s not commonly held? Why can’t we respect her lived experiences? Life’s complicated, multiple things can be true at the same time.
@dinasourprincessparty5 жыл бұрын
Yes Iam allthatandmore There are a lot of interesting studies on ingroup outgroup bias, enough to comfortably say that all communities and therefore all police forces profile for the outgroup, or the foreigner. So as a foreigner, I am extremely glad she shared her perspective! I don’t agree with it, but if I never hear perspective that are different to my own I can never grow into understanding them. By saying that her perspective is invalid you are trying to silence her and denying her own lived experience.

I remember last year after just "attending the show" they went on vlive and celebrated it with us and their smiles were priceless... we only want those smiles to be always there... It's unfortunate people confuse ignorance with racism or hate
@apexknight93565 жыл бұрын
Well the sad part is...racism is born from ignorance. Ofcourse it's not the obvious racism of someone going "I hate black people!". What she demonstrated was a very common perception among those who aren't black called "color blind racism". She doesn't (or didnt) understand that their is a problem among the US police (some not all) of discriminating against black Americans. What she said was indeed problematic because she was siding with police officers who were clearly violating a black person's rights. I'm happy she apologized for it and I do hope she continues to educate herself on these kinds of things. I dont think she deserves all the hate she's getting but it's good that people called her out for it. I'm sure she had no malicious intent. But she still needed to be careful not to side with the individuals in the wrong.

@@flanaggenwaters I dont think you understood what I meant by "color blind racism". This kind of racism is displayed by people who aren't racist but ignorant. I agree with you that she isn't racist especially since this is her only incident. But you dont have to be a racist to say something racist. Because of her ignorance, she looked like she was siding with a corrupt authority violating a black man's rights and people where right to call her out. What was good on her part was to apologize. Blaaqphoenix Last time I checked I’m black and sure ass hell ain’t racist, my whole family is black so is half my friends and their not racist, most the black people I know aren’t racist so what do you mean by “black people are racist too” what kind of ignorant stereotypical statement is that. And your telling me just because they are police men we black people have to respect them harassing us and going against our constitutional rights, killing innocent black lives because their racist and ignorant mindset. So if a police man is blatantly being ignorant and racist, going against our freedom to exercise our rights we should respect them because they are authority. Please tell me this is not what you meant to imply.

@Blaaqphoenix Respect doesn't mean allowing someone to walk all over you. Everyone has a right to question authorities. That's literally the basis for the founding of our country. He wasn't disrespectful, he just asked for an explanation as to why he was singled out and the officers had no explanation to give. After this went viral those officers probably heard an earful from their bosses because when stuff like this happens, police departments can find themselves with lawsuits. The US would be a much different place if citizens always obeyed police without question (cough cough civil rights movement cough).

"Heroes always get remembered, but you know, legends never die!" BTS is already a legend, and that is far more important and powerful than any grammy or any other award. I hope one day they get that grammy they want, but for me a grammy means nothing. 10 years ago, grammys were prestigious, but now most of all aren't sure that they are fair with artists.

I bet that they will try to get BTS involved somehow, either though hosting an award again or doing a performance. We'll see through. If they don't we will do a streaming party through the event, so that while all these people are winning awards the BTS songs will get most played achievements. :P

Honestly Ambers apology was contradictory. She said she didn't know about the racism and what's happening in America but then she says that she supports #BlackLivesMatter. How then does she know about the movement if she didn't know about anything in America because she had been away for 10 years. To me that wasn't an apology.

Well, the fact that Lover which is Critically Claimed Album and the highest-selling album in 2019 gets snubbed is really telling that the Grammy won't give a chance for BTS. I think they only cared about English spoken songs. The best way for BTS to get grammy nominees probably making an OST for English movies with English as the main language, therefore, they don't need to make an album in English cause that's not what they are but a soundtrack is a good approach for them to get noticed by the Grammies.
