Here's the kicker, with these old PS3s you actually need to remove the IHS(Integrated Heat Spreader) and replace that thermal paste as well to get proper cooling. So In order to ever get proper cooling for old PS3s you absolutely need to do both. There is no way they'll have the patience or work ethic to learn how to remove an IHS if they're too lazy to replace the surface thermal paste. NEVER buy a PS3 from DKOldies.

In Canada it also goes one step further for warranty repairs stating that “The law in Canada also states that a manufacturer cannot require a consumer to use OEM parts under the threat of voiding warranty.” This is on top of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requirement here too.

Especially when you keep buying things from the people you repeatedly call scammers & even try to get them to do a sit down interview. You still need participants in the lawsuit who will verify that yes, they bought a "refurbished" console that was never actually opened, and therefore lied to about what services DKOldies were providing. Videos like this are ways to get more and more people aware of what's going on, and the fact the KZbin algorithm is a game you have to constantly play doesn't mean these guys are only in it for the views/revenue -- they want to raise awareness in pretty much the only way this platform will allow content creators to.

Quick correction rich, the warranty stickers themselves are not illegal, actually enforcing them however is. A company can put a "Waranty Void If Removed" sticker on a product to scare a consumer away from opening the product, but if the consumer opens it the manufacturer is legally prohibited from refusing service

I live in the UK, so not aware of the consumer laws in USA. But ironically they could have resolved this much earlier with an apology video for their fault in the term "refurbished" if only tried and tested and if they only refurbish if a fault is identified then amend the descriptions on the website to "tried and tested". Then the consumer could make the decision on the prices for the product. In the UK, I would expect trading standards to get involved, likely arranging "secret shoppers" to get a large level of products to decide if likely to receive as described. Also when the XBOX 360 was displaying the "red ring of death" a consumer programme advised the warranty (in the UK at least) is longer than the standard year provided there is a specific defect that would likely cause fault over time that is up to 6 years from purchase (I wish they told me when my PS1 was faulty and was refused a replacement and had to play it upside down!) If a reasonable refurbished console presumes thermal paste is replaced and then breaks due to overheating, technically it could be returned in the UK past the warranty time. Obviously for old consoles decades old it is more difficult to prove past 12 months that it was repair/refurbishment and not wear and tear but again if the company just changed the description to tried and tested then it would be a fairer description as I would expect they would test consoles/products they purchase when they buy/trade stock

I think the one thing that people haven't looked into enough, probably because it's not a big thing in the US, but was covered in a totally different video about Fallout 76 on another channel. The thing I'm talking about is the perpetual "on sale" discounts that are on the DKOldies site, you can go there and see bundles and consoles that have a listed price and an "on sale/special" price. I've looked at the site with the wayback machine and those "on sale" prices have been that price (more of less, they've gone up but never lost the "on sale" discount) for literally YEARS. It's the Holiday Emote Bundle scam all over again.

It'll be a wonderful journey and you'll hopefully get some bargains when looking for your projects... eg, I got an untested "HD Graphics" model 1 megadrive + games for way below market value (they worked perfectly); and my brother got a "non working" Saturn that only needed a repositioning of the CD drive's rubber cushions to play games perfectly again. Obviously these are exceptions rather than norm, and only happened after grabbing so many projects so keep expectations in check. ifixit and other teardown guides will give decent starting points. You'll probably need to get decent at cleaning, soldering and probing with a multimeter for continuity if you haven't already (a surpisingly large number of problems in retro and even modern electronics comes from poor electrical continuity caused by dirty contacts or even cracking solder joints caused by stuff like drop damage or board flex for example). There's a lot of info and tutorials on what to do and what not to do so it can be overwhelming, but just take it slow. Reddit and other forums can be helpful, but be sure to cover basics first and be as specific as possible when you reach out: garbage in = garbage out when asking online.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) makes it illegal to void any warranties due to someone opening up their products. DKOldies is not only violating the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, they are also violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. They are skating along a dangerous line where someone can sue them. Here here my man. The prices of some these retro games is ridiculous, even at local retro game stores. For example, I went to my local retro game shop a little while ago, and I saw Megaman 7 (SNES) and Captain Commando (SNES) games for 300 dollars. The FTC needs a copy of that email. Just having the sticker on their is bad enough, but threatening to enforce it is just asking for the law to come crashing down on DKOldies. Everyone that has been sent clearly untouched consoles from DKO needs to file complaints with the FTC, their own state attorney general's office, PA's AG office (where DKO is located), and the BBB. The amount of publicly available evidence should be more than enough to get some consumer protection focused agencies investigating these fraudsters. Getting a class action suit going is also not a bad idea. It won't amount to much per customer that they've ripped off, but could be quite devastating for DKO in addition to putting them on blast in a way more likely to attract media attention.

What blows my mind about dkoldies is the fact that they are charging 260 bucks for retro consoles but then they give you 3rd party controllers and power supplies. What makes retro consoles worth money is when you have all the original stuff. An og xbox with 3rd party stuff is worth way less than one that has all official xbox controllers and cables. The only time one of those retro consoles would be worth 260 bucks is if it is complete in the box.

The thing with shiny piano black plastics is yes, they scratch easily, but that can often be buffed out (and another fail for DK Oldies, easy to simply polish that PS3 panel and call it a day, even that is too much for them). The material I despise infinitely more is the rubberised coating on so many things that have all turned into sticky goo, no hope for fixing it. It's a nightmare.

what's hilarious is they could probably make a fair amount of bank by just offering an extended warranty on their console sales and being honest about it. why even bother with the refurb line? just say hey here's a console, its a little more expensive because we promise support and provide a replacement policy it if it breaks in x years or whatever. wantonly breaking both your customers trust and consumer protection laws is probably the dumbest possible move here.

I’ve been watching these videos from you and the other guy for awhile now and just seeing how these classic consoles are supposedly being refurbished and being scammed makes me really want to open my own business and actually give people what they pay for and have the prices be reasonable. It upsets me seeing things like this where people are being taken advantage of

A bit of a correction - Jacob first BOUGHT a refurbed PS3 and inspected it and it was filthy (first pics he shows) and after emailing them, requested a replacement which was what he unboxed. I will add though that the 2nd PS3 was dusty yeah, but was in really good shape for a backwards compatible model. Sony was sending back models even worse than the first one during that replacement thing they did.

Warranty stickers are illegal, and the way they’re using them to not only keep people from finding out that they didn’t clean it but also keeping them from cleaning it themselves just makes it even more illegal

I know that this is the popular opinion but more realistically I would imagine that it’s impossible to know if the consumer didn’t just buy whatever and take out parts and replace them with broken parts or break something in the process and then put it back together and get a refund.

If you look at their “Why are our prices so high” short you can see Joey hit the controller on the shelf when he picks it up. The shelf is made of plastic it’s just funny they don’t show that much care when they are filming. I hate to see how they treat it when they aren’t filming.

A channel called Jacob’s Reviews put up a video where he ordered a Wii U from DKO. The game pad analog stick didn’t work and they sent him a replacement. The replacement had uneven lighting. Half the screen was dim. So now he needs a replacement for the replacement.

I figured they were a bad company. The other problem is these companies suck the fun out of finding a gem and haggling for them. No bragging rights, no effort, no hard work. As a matter of fact they are probably the reason why retro gaming is so DANG expensive. Also, i clean and fix my own consoles.
