In the US, it is illegal for the manufacturer to void the warranty if a “warranty sticker” is removed. It’s just used as a scare tactic to keep people from tampering with the product.
@urbanknish10 ай бұрын
Do you have a source for that claim?
@xwishfulxthinkerx110 ай бұрын
@@urbanknish The Magnus-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 is the relevant law in this situation. The FTC a few years ago began sending out warning letters to companies, making it clear that conditioning a warranty on a customer not repairing their own product is illegal. The warranty is only void if the company can prove that the issue is directly caused by the customer's attempted repair.
@Pluralofvinylisvinyls4 ай бұрын
I got arrested for peeling the warranty sticker off. Somehow they knew I had done it and all of a sudden I saw lasers coming into my house and the cops told me to come out with my hands up. I did 30 months at Sing Sing
@SkaterStimmАй бұрын
@@urbanknish He is right, as long as you don't damage anything while opening it (the sticker doesn't count) you are not voiding the warranty. If you open it and damage it or replace a component with a non OEM part then you void the warranty unless you can restore it back to normal. Let's say you open up your playstation and you solder on a mod chip, then it breaks, and you remove the mod chip, if it has no signs of damage from the mod chip you can possibly get it fixed under warranty. In this scenario they could claim the mod chip caused the issue, but they also can't prove that, so in court you would win the warranty claim. Now if you brought it to them with the mod chip installed they could reject the warranty service until the mod chip is removed. Also if they can PROVE the mod chip caused the failure (or that you messed something up when taking it apart) they can also void the warranty.

Well technically there’s three categories of stores like this, there’s your store that sells used consoles that you don’t mess with except maybe testing and blowing out the dust, DK Oldies that has refurbished consoles ( supposedly ), and a game store I go to called Classic Game Junkie in Glenside, PA that actually does repairs and tries to revive consoles. I like Classic Game Junkie because they’ll legit try to fix your stuff, might take some time since there’s only one repair tech and the owner who does the repairs, but still if it can be fixed they’ll do it. Repairs can be abit expensive, but you got to count for parts and labor to get it done.

There seems to be a wide misuse and misunderstanding of the term “refurbished” which is being misconstrued to mean “reconditioned”. In most cases Refurbished electronics means that the device has been externally cleaned and reaccessorized, and reboxed/repackaged. What you are referring to about opening the console and cleaning it inside is part of a reconditioning process. This is not refurbishing. If all they are doing it cleaning it from the outside, reaccessorizing it and repackaging it, they are for all intents and purpose refurbishing the console, not reconditioning it (which is what you are really referring to). In this case they are technically not lying. I think that many people don’t fully understand the distinction between these two processes and get them crossed in translation.
@Hayzink10 ай бұрын
I actually think the issue arises from the fact that while what you are saying is correct. It’s dkoldies themselves that have caused this by claiming they open the consoles and recondition them although they use they use the wording refurbished

question time: They took the DK Oldies GameCube in on trade. but they don't opened consoles. but DK oldies opened it to refurb it. So, can they not sell it based on his own policy? Secondly, Rick opened it up on video...does that mean they cannot sell it since THEY opened it? Just curious.
@drewkremer26099 ай бұрын
To put this in perspective, the console you were talking about was shipped from DK oldies to the customer two years ago. DK oldies did get in trouble with a lot of people where they did not refurbish consoles the way that people expected them to. In recent months, DK oldies has corrected this and is putting in the extra effort to make sure the consoles they ship today are properly refurbished. So you may want to mention that in your video rather than make a blanket statement about a console from the past.

Not a chance that has ever been refurbished. That dust is so caked on it's at least 5+ years old. I would guess most of the really hardened on dust was formed shortly after it was purchased new. DK Oldies likely only opens broken consoles, so if its a working item, there is a good chance the only dust getting cleaned is what is directly under the casing, if they even do that.

Not taking opened and/or refurbished consoles in trade can be a double edged sword with a lot of the Gen 6 and up consoles. With GameCube, the laser can be unreliable due to failing caps on the disc drive. The Xbox is a disaster waiting to happen if the time clock cap is not removed and the caps replaced if bulging. The Xbox DVD drives are starting to have read errors due to failing caps on the disc drive. The 360 is starting to see consoles with failing caps more often now. With my personal collection alone, I have 3 or my 8 Xbox consoles (one being a debug kit) that have had the caps fail and all have had leaking clock caps. One needed trace repair to get the power and eject to work. I can’t imagine that it will be long before it is not viable to sell those consoles without opening up and doing necessary maintenance on them to keep them up and running. Any pre 1.6 Xbox without the clock cap removal is a waste of money to buy as it may literally be dissolving traces and nearby components from that acidic capacitor leaking and not being cleaned up.

Unpopular opinion: If a store applies cleaning solution, tests a console that is used, then a mandatory *"money back *within a time frame"* should be issued to the customer, as it's the stores liability for messing with it. On the contrary, the store could offer the game, or console at a reduced price to void a warranty. Then it falls on the customer as they chose the option. This reduces the returns risk. It's a good business practice to at least offer options in this case.
