What happens a lot is that state or local laws require a certain % of low income housing in each town, so when these new developments come in they’re required to set aside some townhouses or apartments and rent them lower than market rate, in order for the town to fulfill it’s requirement without going out of its way to build low income housing. The units look identical to the surrounding ones that get sold or rented for full market value so they’re not what people typically think of when they hear the phrase “low income housing”. It’s a legal loophole more than anything. But the fact that a handful of units would be set aside for that purpose is purely incidental and not relevant to Dave’s objection to the project. From his explanation, his biggest issue was that they’re using his name to sell the project- basically telling people they’ll be Dave Chappelle’s neighbors. There is also the point that the project isn’t inline with the character of the neighborhood in terms of design, architectural styles etc.

The $300K homes weren’t the affordable housing. They were to build affordable housing as well. Also who cares what he doesn’t want? Dave Chappelle has had ties to Yellow Springs, OH since he was a teen. His dad was a professor at nearby Antioch College so Chapelle spent lots of time in that community as a kid spending summers with his dad. In many interviews Chappelle has referenced Yellow Springs as a second hometown so it's not like he threw a dart and chose to live in the middle of an Ohio cornfield. Yellow Springs is a very socially and politically liberal pocket, so much so that Chappelle choose to raise his family there and has been a resident for decades. And he was not opposed to "low income housing" in any standard context of what those words mean in most other housing scenarios. He was opposed to substantial urban sprawl and the smoke and mirrors of a city council board trying to push through a zoning proposal and site plan that was not representative of its current community residents. If housing @ $200k is low income 1/2 hour outside the greater Dayton, OH area, then the economy is much better than what's being reporting by HUD. What Chappelle objected to is really no different then the housing push back that's been going on for years in Portland, OR etc. against more ala David Byrne's Taking Heads/Rush subdivision sprawl.

The one thing some people can't understand is social class which can also tie into economic class. Dave is socially middle class but has high income. Dave clearly wants to preserve his town's social status. Bringing in low income housing to an enriched neighbourhood would cause a degrade in property value, which would also lower Mr. Chappelles economic income (not anything that would grossly impact him to a lower class or status.) I guess some people see no differences in class or structure or rather they believe that they can mix environments and see no draw back or negative ramifications. People really need to study basic economics in my opinion.

If my city decided to bring in affordable housing (which isn't that bad in my opinion) it could attract a different class of individuals who's standards and contributions are below average.
