Affordable housing in my city is a joke! They base the qualifying income off of $80k and no one living in those areas are making $80k. It's a lie!

It is negligent to the point of malpractice for BNC to report on this without actually doing the work to discover exactly why Dave made the statement that he did. At first glance, it looks like a local developer is trying to capitalize on Dave has done to bring up the value of the area. From what I know of Dave, his problem with his city has little or nothing to do with providing affordable housing to those who need it. Very disappointed in BNC for their incomplete coverage of a B man. Very disappointed.

So I can build a very minuscule amount of affordable housing and the rest can be luxury that low income people can’t afford. @800mEric You're the only biased one here. Every single place in America that builds affordable housing brings down property values and brings crime and deterioration of the neighborhood. Dave didn't disagree with affordable housing, he disagreed with their plan. You can see the entire meeting online. None of these news channels are giving accurate details. It's only to smear Dave. You invest 65 million into a community, I'm sure you'd feel like Dave does.

I don't know about Ohio, but here in New York developers often say that they are building affordable housing and they receive tax abatements and the apartments are far from affordable. This is what causes the homeless problem to grow all across this country. But the rich developers get richer with our tax dollars. Also I understand that they would be building the affordable housing later. Sometimes it doesn't happen.

@Esther Blount The problem in places like New York and California are rent control laws, zoning laws, land restriction laws, etc. All of those laws keep more housing from being built. The only way to make “affordable housing” is by building more housing and drive the supply up which will drive the prices down. Economics 101, supply & demand.

They were never building affordable homes they donated 1.5 acres out of the 53 they purchased that is not in this plan nor zoned for or being done by them. They are butt hurt because the majority of the town want their town to remain small and they are using Dave Chappell who is actually investing 65 million, adding jobs, police reform in a liberal village. We have to do the research as black journalist before passing misinformation from right-wing agenda.

@800mEric - Good thing you are ignoring facts, otherwise you would have no case. The community has been protesting the development from Oberer Homes for a few years. The “donation” of 1.75 acres from their 53 acre development was proposed more recently. It is disingenuous to say they are protesting “affordable housing” when they were protesting the development waaaaaay before that 1.75 acres was proposed. By the way, Oberer Homes isn’t even building the “affordable homes” they just “donated” some property so the city could maybe eventually find a builder. It’s crazy to see low info people like you build crazy incendiary opinions based on shoddy reporting and misinformation.

In the depth of the bellows this had nothing to do with affordable housing. It’s about a contractor wanting to build middle class homes but using affordable housing as a ruse or cover for grants and tax benefits purposes. Ultimately if the affordable homes were to be built it would not have been anywhere near chapelles humble abode.

You guys want a deeper dive? Then look at what others who have looked into this are saying: the details of the plan, while the deal is being framed as affordable housing, the entire thing is basically a development of homes on 50+ acres with the developer donating less than 2 acres for "affordable housing" in exchange for a tax break, with , get this, no requirement for them to have a plan in place, no obligation for them to build it, they won't even have to build it in the same area. I believe the figure being thrown for the main units was along the line of $250,000+, which...I mean, is probably affordable housing in NY or CA, and in OH, I highly doubt the starting rate of 250k counts as very affordable.

I dont get why a lot of the media isnt reporting the truth. The ''affordable housing'' in this case was a facade for a big corporation to make money in other ways in that area. Dave being the intelligent man he is knows the truth about it and refused to let that happen. Affordable housing can get an allocation in each development but the truth is that the actual people who can buy those 300,000 $ apartments are usually investors just looking to rent them out. The people he and his friends are scared of would probably never set foot in a single apartment by the end of the development.

It dont work. Low income affordable housing in a upscale neighborhood doesn't work. I know because I left a mixed "luxury building " because of those programs they allowed in the building. Where I live now is like night &day compared to living amongst low income affordable housing people. The place was always dirty constant nuisances crime. Being poor is a mindset. I came from the hood and bust my butt to work hard to get financially where I am. If you just give handouts and people dont earn it then they dont value it. It dont work!. And dave knows this! It will drop the value of his home and that place will be a dump in less then 2 years after its build and dave knows this.

I grew up right outside of the Village of Yellow Springs. That place has maintained an almost utopian ambience where things haven't really every changed, and it's beautiful. There are affordable housing Apartments going up in alot of suburbs recently. For votes? State and federal governments aren't always Vetting the people they choose to fill spots in affordable housing. "Enjoy the fruit of your labor". People work hard to enjoy a life free of certain issues. The old style of doing affordable housing Was putting them on the Center City bus route where all the amenities were. Both sides agreed because those without cars would be near Services and those with more could go to a place of relaxation. Now the City businesses are boarding up. Crime is up. The suburbia is of retirement age. And some have forgotten that affordable housing is not a lifestyle; it is a temporary break so that you can save and move to a better place in a few years. 45 Spoke on this while he was in office very controversily... But he was right. A few...yes. But not neighborhoods upon neighborhoods of housing. The housing is often tied to programs that help with job training and psyc Services. There's no way that alot of these suburbia housing Units going up have that elevation Aspect in mind. I would opposé too. This is why I would rather go back to the inner City rent control argument instead.

Exactly. I once lived in apartments paying 1400 a month. As renter I was not noticed that they turn 30 of their apartments into affordable housing. People was hanging outside the building, police was constantly called and the building smell like . I left before my lease was up. I agree with David 100 percent.

Almost all new housing lowers property values (unless building luxury housing) because of supply and demand. When there are more homes available, the previous homes have a lower demand, thus not having as many people bidding up the price.

I really think you all should do more investigating and get more information from ALL sides before reporting on it especially since your reporting could very well leave people with an unfavorable view of Dave Chappelle. Maybe you all could reach out to Dave and get him on your show to get his unfiltered view as well as the other parties. Talking about a subject with no real facts and a lot of speculation is unfair and poor journalism (& could potentially open you up to slander).

Did you guys do any research on this project before airing it? Out of over 100 acres of land only 1.7 acres would be dedicated to "affordable housing" the rest is for 250k and up homes. Not many call those affordable

That's a bad look by Chappelle. To be so open and adamant about his opposition to affordable housing is problematic. He's a public figure, so one would think he would be inconspicuous. At the end of the day, Chappelle is someone that moves in white spaces. Funny thing is there are lots of folks like Chappelle that will publicly support struggling individuals, but privately disapprove of them living in their neighborhood.
