Jeff and Lana continue their read-along of the fifth novel in the Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson, entitled Midnight Tides.
They start off with a NON-Spoiler topic, discussing author book readings. Have you ever attended one?
Then, they discuss in detail the events of chapters 4 and 5 of the novel.
Special thanks to Emily Bachynski for the DLC Bookclub theme song. Find more of her work at www.badbuddy.b...

"book good" that's a succinct summary of Malazan, I'd say. Who needs tens of books or millions of words? book good, the intricacies of this world lie in those two words.

"Book good," now this is the sort of penetrating insight I tune in for. 😂 If I may offer you both a similar compliment, 'you word good.' I love listening to you every week. I hope that you have a fantastic weekend.

My oh my… chapter 4 best chapter of the series so far??? Probably!! You’re right, it’s that good. Time for some stray thoughts: - appreciate Lana’s perspective on the bit from Seren about the dynamic between women, and between men, etc etc. It rang true to me upon reading but good to hear the same from a woman. Steve just be that smart, it’s so real - the Drownings… in addition to everything you gushed about, this is also a great example (one of a few in this book) of a metaphor made literal. The abstract concept of DEBT is now a PHYSICAL thing that will literally KILL you by DROWNING. YOU ARE DROWNING IN DEBT!!!! It’s almost heavy handed but man I just think it’s brilliant. - you can already see why Tehol and Bugg are a lot of people’s favorite characters. Just so SO hilarious, but with real depth to them too - I think you’re grooving on all the Edur stuff perfectly. You’re right there with it, learning more but still puzzled and intrigued by mysteries… it’s so much fun isn’t it! Especially for Malazan’s target audience!! - oh, the undead girls Shurq and Kettle; and also Ublala Pung. They are incredible additions to the story, and you will love them even more soon. Just you wait!!! - random: on one hand this book is almost totally divorced from the previous 4 books. On the other hand, the context you have is super helpful. For instance when you learn the Azath is dying… imagine you hadn’t read the first 4 books. That would be almost meaningless. But with context you’re like “OH SHIT THATS BAD” and you’re right. It’s bad 😂 😬 - as awesome as this book is so far, things are about to get crazy. As you must know. This is still setup!! I am so ready for your disbelief and joy at the coming events. Onward!!!

I love your surprise at Udinaas knowing Anomander Rake. Remember in the first book Quick Ben throws a bottle demon at him to slow him down and the demon, literally from another dimension is like "ah shit, not this guy".

Speaking of confusing names in this book. My first read I was so confused with Withal, Wither, and Wyval. And Udinaas is part Wyval or something, but talks to Wither, who isn't a Wyval. And whither Withal? Whence?

43:40 If I remember correctly, in previous chapters it was introduced the First Consort of the queen. As the king has an official concubine, the queen has a consort. It's quite open minded to go full in on the fact that those marriages only have political and economic reasons, and they each officially have lovers. How many Kings in the world have betrayed their queens in the bed? Here it happens publicly, and on equal terms. This also turns up the intrigues and betrayals to eleven, and we all loves it! It's also such a contrast with the edur royal family.

90 minutes of pure joy :) For Lana, fun autobiographical audio books narrated by their authors: Bruce Cambpell's "If Chins Could Kill - Confessions of a B Movie Actor" and Anna Kendrick's "Scrappy Little Nobody" "Elalle" I've mostly heard it said as rhyming with 'halal'. My French Canadian brain defaults to the 'e' being silent. I've always wondered what, if any French influence is there in Erikson's constructed language. Shurq and Kettle out of context is deeply creepy.. two animated corpses standing next to barrows. I could see a Stranger Things season 8 trailer ending with a dramatic cut to this scene, slowly panning out. Udinaas and his dream-visions I imagine as similar to Kruppe's Dreams, in terms of how real and interactive they are, but instead of a dream he creates and controls, he gets pulled into echoes and memories of the past by others. See you next week!

Great interpretation of Udinaas’ dreams. Also totally agree about how to pronounce Elalle, although that could entirely be based on the fact that I feel like 99% of people default to this pronunciation, so anything else sounds weird to me

Man, I'm in the third book of the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb and I gotta say, I haven't been enthralled with a series or writer like this since Malazan. Maybe once y'all are done with the ten very big Malazan books you can jump into Hobb's 16 book Realm of the Elderlings 😂 jk jk

Alright, following Jeff’s example, one sentence excerpts this week: 1. “Shurq Elalle’s fate had taken a turn for the worse.” 2. “Pain worn without pause and for so long could itself become a mask.” 3. “Motionless air and the mist falling through it like the breath of an exhausted god.”
