You are exactly right! This should come naturally to many people, but... Play with it all the time :-). Trimming is an iterative process, there is no way you can have a great trim in 4-5 flights, every time you trim you are just changing compromises. And the more you do it, the more you hone in on the best compromise. Full house sailplanes especially, more surfaces to balance, but DLG is the same. Modes or no modes, this guy is right, fully trimming a bird to optimal glide (this could be while flying hands off at 37 deg. left and 64 deg down.... I don't mean level) takes at least for me 20-30 flights, paying attention and correcting the optimal balance of all surfaces against each other. It took me two years to figure this out, and now I see this...

when you say 4 mm flaps down where do you measure that from?

when you are in thermal or min sink do you only turn with rudder?
