Why do bad DMs do this? "I don't like your character, so instead of working with you to compromise, I'm gonna single you out, destroy the game, and ruin my reputation."
@vegeta002

Ego, I'd wager. People who think their reputation is unimpeachable and only think about their own opinions (or whoever they're simping for) usually feel they can do anything they want without consequence, or that everyone will be on their side.

I'm no DM but I would allow it, i would give it a +3AC, a bonus D12 for extra bludgeoning damage, and each attack moves the player and the medium enemy one tile in the attack's direction, any enemy smaller gets moved 3 spaces back and get knocked prone, and it counts as both a polearm and a great weapon. but enemies can dodge it with advantage and take another bonus action if the player fails a high challenge athletics check,

Yeah, no, you only need to look at how things ended for OP's first character to know the DM was not going to keep up the nice act for long. Op's character has his stuff stolen, a precious cultural heirloom damaged, gets a KNIFE pulled on him in broad daylight, and defends himeslf when assaulted, with his group corroborating his story. When OP decided to change her character to appease the DM, the DM didn't send off her character pleasant, he narrated how her character gets shipped off to FANTASY ALCATRAZ on an assault charge for self defense, and gets shivved in prison. Sure, ok, yeah, the DM TOTALLY wasn't stringing along OP to make an example of her while gaslighting her into thinking she was still welcome. What a prick.

@@TheCrazydude17 Actually large bastard sword does 2d8, large longsword does 2d6 and you can't wield large greatswords with just the core materials of pathfinder. So large bastardsword would be the most damaging out of them. Also some large weapons wouldn't fit every world, even with dragons and the like. Its all aesthetics and stuff. Like two handed weapons would be the size of the wielder. So a large sword would be around 8 feet minimum to 16 ft maximum. You can look at all of the Medieval weaponary side of youtube to the size of a 8 ft to 16 foot sword would be like. That DM wasn't running a Pathfinder campaign. They were doing a one-on-one roleplay with their girlfriend and forced other people to watch. It's obvious that they'd get upset whenever someone "won" at the game or outshined his girlfriend. Chances are Nathan only got a pass as an old friend. The fact that everyone other than OP was new is also probably why she was targeted so much since she actually knew how to make interesting characters.

The hilarious thing about the DM getting bent out of shape about that build is that OP basically copied it from Amiri, the Barbarian Iconic from PF1e. Meaning she was not only going by the rules as written when making the character, but I'd even go so far as to say rules as intended, since the iconics are meant to symbolize how the game characters are meant to be created. And this includes the oversized bastard sword, as that's meant to demonstrate how sizing on weapons works. I also wonder which cavalier order Nathan belonged to...the DM clearly demonstrated why keeping things to the core rulebook is sometimes a good idea if you don't understand a class's ins and outs.

From part 1 this sounds like a story of a DM with ego problem who plays favorites. DND is a game of imagination at it's core. This means people are allowed to play as opposite genders and sexualities. It's also a game meant to played as equals. Giving individual players special treatment or singling out another is just bs on the DM's end. Not to mention the special treatment is given to a significant other which is a whole other issue in itself.

Likely ego and the fact that his wife was not being the center of attention! But the idiot never seemed to understand don't eat where you shit. In this case don't bully people you have to work with on a daily basis In front of Other coworkers as well. That's like the quickest way to be on everybody's shit list. He would have been better off looking for randos. At least then if they left or had disagreement with him It would have no major effect Outside the game. But nope idiot decided to pretty much sink whatever reputation he had among the coworkers. The game was over after that spectacle, Idiot likely assumed that he was being subtle when he wasn't and pretty much Nerfing OP To hell and then daring to call her cheater He thought he was being smart by saying what he did About not revealing who the cheater was. It's a bully tactic To scare her into not saying anything because if she did then he would reveal she was the cheater and humiliate her. But this also shows how much he looks down on his co workers Intelligence As he Underestimated just how disliked he had become. I believe he was avoiding the poster at work Because he got dressing down, And he feared his dwindling reputation going down Even further if anything could be perceived as bullying OP! As someone said Some like him assume their reputations are untouchable So they act out as they do And the quickest way to destroy a bully self esteem Is the show them that yeah their actions have consequences. We have to remember bullies are a cowardly sort When they know they're hated by all They quickly retreat. But least with this explanation he had to walk on egg shells And hopefully learned that maybe Just maybe it's a terrible idea to target bully coworkers! Because turns out you're not the most popular person like you thought you were. I also like the remind idiots obsessed with popularity That's the quickest way to make yourself a pariah. It's a coin toss on if the crowd cares or not for your bad behavior. And in this case the coin landed heads! He deserves what he gets. Tabletop doesn't exist for bullying AND especially Simping for one of your players (if you can't be impartial and fair, then you can't be a DM! Why do you think a judge cannot be trusted to oversee a Trial if a family member is on the prosecutor or Defendant's side! Even if they have no bias, they're will always be an accusation of favoritism, so better they're NOT involved.)

I feel OP. As a cis female player myself, I have a tendency to default to male characters as well to remove the "Oooh a GURL!" effect in-game. Less a problem now with the groups I play with, so I'm more comfortable with picking any gender in-game, but yeah.

I was lucky in that my first proper dnd group had an even split of male and female players. I default to male characters with new groups where I'm not sure of player dynamics (and sometimes even that doesn't stop them, cuz sketchy players are gonna sketch), but with groups I'm comfortable with the character's gender is now down to what °▪︎☆V I B E☆▪︎° I'm getting across. Currently playing a cowboy-flavored gunslinger, and my biggest problem starting out was getting the party to address him with he/him pronouns. Though it did lead to a funny moment where the spectator we were fighting corrected the other characters, then shot my boy with a necrotic beam. They stopped misgendering him after that. 🤣

Strangely enought, as a male I rather often plan female characters. Not sure why, but when I make a character I don't have a concept in mind of whether it's a male or female, and it just ends up one way or the other at some point of writing the backstory- tho usually my female characters have evil alignment and also happen to be my favourite characters.

People like DM Billy are a real pain to deal with. When you have an issue but try to deal with it by talking it out like adults, they don't want to admit that they have feelings about it. If you have feelings you're not being logical and therefore you're in the wrong. Obviously. Right? No, of course not! But that's how they handle it and bam, next thing you know you're dealing with petty nonsense over their not-a-problem problem. Then if/when you get annoyed they'll often just act like you're the one suddenly having feelings out of nowhere and therefore being unreasonable.

Aiya I get real annoyed whenever I have gotten asked why I play a male character. I mostly just say “do you remember that when we spoke at the beginning I said I was genderfluid?” And they usually feel awkward at that. Honestly, what I hate is, just because I appear to be female in appearance and voice, I immediately am expected to play female characters even if I myself am fluid. A ton of “appears as girl so should always play girl” mentality and it’s annoying. I don’t just play male characters in games, I have about half the characters I play being female, but it’s frustrating the reaction I get when I play male ones. I have it better these days as the groups I’m in are better about it was still frustrating and eventually led to me leaving some groups in the past due to the mounting frustration. Least I have never had it as bad as this.

"Oversized bastard sword" ... so a greatsword? The defining trait of a bastard sword (or hand-and-a-half sword) is that it can be used with one of both hands. If it's too big to be used one-handed then it's either a war sword (a great sword in D&D terms) or a bearing sword (a decorative/ceremonial sword that's too big to wield). "Would look too silly" is a weird rationalization for something that only exists as narration. "Maybe now he'll think twice about putting on random items from a dungeon without having them properly checked first" ... but it was properly checked. "Suddenly and for no reason" - I'm sorry, were you not paying attention when she stole and destroyed his irreplaceable personal property and then threatened him with a knife completely unprovoked?

The player seemed too not like the player was good and knew their stuff, and favored his GF who obviously was used to being the focus. This is a case of player whose skill outmatches the DM's ability, some veteran players play other genders. I myself am a male and will play females, that DM obviously is like some I meant who prefer players play their own gender, which helps new players but not players who have experience with it. TTRPG's are an escape from reality, why stifle it? However this DM just wants to target the player, who just wants to play their character without being made a target.

About the wealth part: I once had the same problem in a Starfinder game. (Pathfinder in space with technology and magic) The DM just wouldn´t put any money or items in our way, and because he railroaded us all the time ala "The NPC puts explosive collars on all of you, and demands you to do XYZ for him." which of course meant no payment in the end, we couldn´t earn money that way either. He gave us our own spaceship and our own colony IN THE FIRST SESSION, but it was again forced onto us with no option to refuse, and we were more administrators than owners. We got no salary, and when i asked if we could tax the population and gain some money that way, he said something along the lines of "That would cause unrest." So we were basically slaves all the time. It got to the point were we didn´t have enough money to buy food. It only got better when i started to loot every dead enemy for their crappy weapons worth a nikel and a dime, and also told everybody why i did it. It was somewhat annoying to do that, (for the other players too i guess) but i felt like my character had no choice, if he didn´t want to starve to death. But it somewhat seemed to work, because the DM got annoyed too, and decided that droping some money on us was better than having to deal with this. Still, we were terribly underequipped, since we mostly still had our starting equipment at level five, and combat encounters became harder and harder, which the DM lamented about, and i told him why thats the case. (didn´t change anything) I have quite a few little stories about that particular campaign, which disintegrated after two years (i had no idea it went on so long, but i checked my last message to the DM where i told him my grievances as constructive as possible) because all the players quit. I don´t see our DM as a bad person, but he was pretty stubborn, sort of every hill was a hill to die on for him.

No one talked it out, Doge. One person called out the DM for targeting them over and over again and ruining their cool character, and the DM denied all of it and tried (and failed) to make it seem like it was the player's fault. Please stop insinuating that this story had a happy ending. There was no lack of communication, only a dick who wasn't comfortable with girls playing in his game unless they were sleeping with him. Maybe Drake can give this the commentary it deserves. By the way, the title of the video is wrong too; it should be, "GM Nerfs Girl's Pathfinder Character for Being Male".
