The first story is a perfect example of why someone running a game should never rely on things going a certain way. I once had a story arc centered around a series of antagonists, and the players were up against the penultimate BBEG. I had an epic battle planned out with multiple angles for strategies and victory conditions. It was the culmination of no less than 8 game sessions. They wiped her out with a single spell. One action, and it was over. What did I do? I laughed and let it go. They were so elated with their success, and it would have sucked to take that away from them. The whole event became a meme in our gaming group. So what about all that prep and planning that went to waste? Well, it didn't. I just reflavoured it for another game. Their one-shot kill saved me prep down the road. Everyone wins!

That's what I always say. Oh no, the super cool battle which took a long time to plan just ended in 1 turn? Just reskin it and reuse it later, it's not like the players would ever figure out. If anything, that's even better for the DM because the players had a lot of fun and you got out of the battle without even using your planned "encounter".

@shadiafifi54
@shadiafifi54 2 жыл бұрын
Dark Heresy: The DM seems to be a complete asshat in retrospect, given what the "discussion" revealed about them. A good GM would have made the end boss fun regardless. Like having the preacher be a body double and the real guy be hiding behind the scenes, telepathically feeding the target their lines. Or have the body erupt into a demon (it's 40K, it happens). Or have a very frustrated Word Bearer wait for the PCs for ruining decades if not centuries of planning. If the DM didn't want the PCs to succeed, they shouldn't have let them roll for it. Fanservice HP: Yeah, she should have stuck to fanfiction. God knows there's worse out there.

I don't know anything about Dark Heresy but why was I thinking of being able to salvage the boss fight with something like RE5's things that occasionally come out on headshot(thinking of something like that happening to salvage that boss fight, since you kill the priest but whatever was controlling it would hop out and fight but again, I know next to nothing about dark heresy aside from what is given in a few RPGhorrorstories)

didn't say I'd do it(fanfic or otherwise), just saying if you are going to be that upset of your BBEG getting 1 shot you might want to make a reason as to why they survived the attack, rather than stating it missed, cover is blown etc.(even then now re-listening to the story, probably just state they died and make an underling the new bbeg or something, they'd have a reason to continue their work if nothing else.)

That Dark Heresy story reminds me of a campaign I played in where we got to the BBEG in his throne room, and just laid into him after winning initiative, and the DM ruled he nulled all damage because the node didnt have him die yet until later or something on his pet dragon, and Bullshitted something about dragon scale armor. The most bullshit part of that reasoning was that I was playing a *Dragonborn Paladin* and was covered head to talon in dragon scales, and this was after a Black Dragon boss.

That sounds like it could have been interesting if it had been handled better. Coming up to a boss that is protected by a barrier, then having to take out the barrier before you can fight him directly could be an interesting trope to use if played right. Sounds like your DM didn't know how to play it right though, and it ends up sounding almost as bad as the one in the story. I'd argue that the story one is slightly worse though, mostly because at least your DM TRIED to rationalize things even if it was all obvious BS.

The moment your anti-murder wrestler piledrives an enemy fighter so hard his ribs crack and he receives a skull fracture because the wrestler made his build absolutely lethal and the dice love him too much can be, a plot device for the DM if he's clever. There is town in a friends homebrew that the wrestler will never enter, because the time after the above mentioned fight he kept hearing about a warrior who'd been badly injured. The townspeople had nursed him back to health as best they could, but it was painfully obvious he'd been turned into an idiot with breathing issues that prevented him from doing physical labour. Having heard of this man the wrestler decided he would go to him and ask him what monstrosity had harmed him so badly. Finally talking the group into it, the wrestler lead us to the flophouse the idiot was staying in. See, the wrestler was sure he'd found a new side adventure, but when he found the man kneeling in the shrine of the goddess of Mercy, his day was wrecked. The man in question turned to see the wrestler and started to laugh nervously, it was the fighter he piledrove into the flagstones a month back. The man pleaded through coughs and increasingly pained laughter. " Gods need souls. Please help head smasher, help Bing find his god!" The wrestler shook his head and fled the flophouse, with the young priestess behind him looking concerned. When the group caught up with her they asked why she was chasing their friend, and she shrugged and said "He was crying," Trying to get her to go back to the flophouse desk was no easy task since she demanded answers about the event and saw through our bluffs easily. Eventually the truth came out and she nodded sadly before offering two forms of merciful restitution. One was to kill the imbecile thus releasing his soul to the afterlife, the other was to help her goddess by way of deed or contribution. She then said in a wavering voice. "My goddess brought Bing to my care, he is hers now, as to why she brought your friend to him..." We offered her 200 gold from each of our pockets, but she refused saying. "Your friend must deliver mercy, by gold or death, it is his responsibility and burden," she then said in a voice nearing sobs. "It is not my right to choose, but I will say Bing is the name the town has given him because that's the sound the metal plate in his head makes when he has seizures in the street..." So, rather than enter the town the wrestler waits for us to get supplies and gives us 500 gold to give to the priestess every time, she tries to seem grateful and even cordial, but in her eyes is a hint of sorrow each time she sees the wrestler is not among us. Now that's some "Actions have consequences, inaction has devastating ones" deep, dark, nocturnal, need a damn shower crap that always leaves the table wondering if it's better to finish off a foe or pay for their care. :(

This isn't a horror story, but that first story reminds me of the time I ran a game where the players were being chased by Selkie pirates across the Feywild over several different battlemaps. The chase was going great they they just barely got away from this terrifying, giant beserker-looking warrior, climbing up a cliff and cutting the rope behind them so he couldn't follow. "Nice job, y'all." I said, "Shame though, he was going to be a fun boss fight if he caught you." Player 1: "Wait, that's a boss fight? Let's go back, we're fighting him." Player 2: "Hell yeah! I jump off the cliff at him." I was so happy with how willing to do the exciting stupid things that I even let that one player split his fall damage with the beserker. Good times.

I Don't Like That Roll - players often do stuff that spoils the "plans" and/or surprises the GM - takes a flying carpet to the top of the tower rather than fighting their way through all the monsters from the ground floor up (as we did to our DM) or taking a moral quandary situation - armed mugger is a small child - and recruiting said child as a partner in crime (as one of my players did to me). The correct response for the DM is to go with it and follow on with the *natural consequences* of the actions - not punitive "consequences" (a.k.a. "throwing the toys out of the cot") and certainly not taking away player agency by ruling "that never happened." We were told by our DM *after* we'd entered the top of the tower, snatched the McGuffin and annihilated our way down through the tower (approaching all the traps and ambushes from the *_inside_* 🤣) and made our escape, that she'd carefully planned every trap and monster so it would be a gruelling slog up from the ground floor that would take at least an entire session... but she didn't get pissy with us for "not doing it right" and suddenly bring in overpowered monsters or flat out rule "you can't do that because reasons". Likewise, when the player responded to my "what do you do when the lethal threat is a minor?" problem with "I like your style, kid. How'd you like to earn some *_real_* money?", I decided that the fact that he RP'ed the scene *and* it hit straight to the motivations for this character was enough that he successfully defused the situation *and* gained a willing ally... (whom he subsequently used to drive all the other PCs *insane* over the course of the game and provided some of the most memorable and enjoyable "War Stories" we've ever had). Sniper blows the head off your corrupt priest with a single shot? FUCKING AWESOME! Even if it does bugger the planned "boss fight". So, right... *chaos ensues* - there's a religious service full of panicked people who are not going to want to be in a room with a sniper, there are loyal followers who are going to want to kill the sniper and anyone who helped, there are guards... there is now utter pandemonium and the PCs have still got to get safely away - *PLAY ON* So glad they all just called the DM on his bullshit and shut down the game. That DM didn't deserve players - hope he learned from this and *grew up* eventually.

That intro story reminds me so much of one of the players in my group. Contantly doing things that just make the rest of us facepalm (mostly from the sheer lack of common sense and not in a zany this will be funny way), mis-interpreting what the DM says, occassionally trying to pull stuff out of his a$$ (running gag is that he's got an AK-47 up there) and it's often like pulling teeth to get him not to split from the party. One of his most recent wtf moments was where he got his brand new character killed almost before the campaign had began. The DM had literally just started to introduce the game, and he said his character was sleeping under a boat at Westgate (Faerun). The party was never intended to start on that side of the continent, since two of them were travelling south from their home in Firesheer near Icewind Dale. Being alone, he of course is accosted by thugs and robbed/killed. Even if he wasn't killed his character was like 2k miles away from the party and so doomed to never have a chance to meet them. Lucky for him, the DM was nice enough to allow the same character with a quick rename, but this isn't the first time, or even the fasted he's gotten a character of his killed. He's so notorious for character deaths from senseless desicions that our other friend in his campagin gave him an amulet that revives him from death. Nicest guy you'd ever meet but the way he plays is... Well chaotic at best and insane at it's worst. The 2 second detonator (not remotely triggered mind) on a thermonuclear device is a legend in our group.

On the fate point story: 1. that's what fate points are for. 2. There's 2 SIMPLE "fixes" to the party blowing up your boss fight. 2a. Body double. Be careful with this because it still kinda feels crappy to the players. But MUCH less so. 2b. Welp boss fight is now a CHASE. They gave away their position and need to get out before being caught. A chase is still a great way to have a boss fight its thrilling and engaging for the players trying to find ways to help the escape that aren't combat and using combat tricks in interesting and unusual ways.

Intro: Not much for me to say or add. Yeah... I Don't Like THat Roll: Refusing to take into account the sniper doing his job, removing player equipment, and DM NPCs are a recipe for disaster. DM Runs World's Most Irritating Game: Likely went after new players because experienced players would likely have called him out for his actions. Makes more sense than wanting harder fights but only grabbing newer players. Yet Another DM GF: Threatening to dump someone for treating everyone equally in a game about imagination is a very bad sign. OP needs to talk to his friend and explain why he's leaving at least. When D&D Becomes Riverdale: You know Crispy hates a story when he swears. And other than the skin-walkers, it wasn't very "grimdark," but romance-focused. Those are two very different things. The DM did a terrible job setting expectations. Hopefully someone else in the group is willing to DM the setting for the group and do a better job than that DM.

You had an amazing moment of victory right there that those players could’ve looked back fondly on and you barely had to put the work in, and you decide to take that away from them just because it wasn’t what you intended? There are some DMs who struggle to make such a scene happen at the table, and you got that moment without any effort, and you tossed it in the bin because “but my story!!!!”. Story 1: Hot take, 'boss fights' don't work well in TTRPGs. Even good GMs who plan boss fights have still have a lil voice in the back of their head telling them to shut down creative solutions by the players so that their precious 'boss fight' won't be disturbed. GMs should just make a strong NPC with a lair, not plan out some scene that involves the players going directly toe to toe with them. With this mentality, lucky crits, unexpected combos of player abilities and good planning will let the GM let it happen and be glad that it does instead of feeling dour that their precious boss fight got "Wasted" by players playing the game. The only thing making a quick villain death anti-climactic is the game master salty that players did something cool instead of describing the moment in an epic way.

Taking away the player victory just to "humble" them is extremely petty. Our group defeated enemies in many ridiculous ways and ou GM would just roll with it and find it amusing. From putting a Brand of Truth on an enemies forehead, which caused damage if he lied or refused to answer a question and taking 90% of his hit points through questions alone to rolling a perfect persuasion to convince the guards of the big bad to to join us he would just let the dice decide. The surprise is part of the fun.

Had a group of players who cornered a powerful necromancer who they needed info from, newest player, an oread barbarian (pathfinder 1) named Brock Slide, put the weakened necromancer in a choke hold while the more experienced player asked questions. Fast forward, the party has asked the questions they know they needed, and are mulling over any other potential questions they may want to ask. I was planning on the necromancer taking this opportunity to have summoned enough of their power to cast random bullshit and escape, as they were meant to be a recurring antagonist that the party would chase back to their lair. Brock however was bored of asking questions, and asks to roll to break the necromancer's neck. After a back and forth between Brock and the rest of the party, Brock points out it seemed like they didn't have anymore questions of merit, and Brock didn't want to risk the necromancer escaping. The party agrees, and the meta conversation is over. I've decided to see how it goes, as the necromancer is still powerful, and would pretty much require perfect rolls to kill. A few perfect rolls later, and the party is looting the necromancer's corpse. I ended up just having the necromancer come back as a wraith... and the party enchanted Brock's gauntlets so he could "break" the ghosts neck too. The wraith ended up filling the roll I had planned for the necromancer, but the game fizzled out due to people moving away before it could go anywhere.

Opening: amazing what bag of holding can have First story: this is something most GMs hopefore. Yeah, we have all been there where we thought a boss would be tougher than it was, but even Dark Souls has moments that can make it easy for the player if they choose to exploit it. If it was me, i probably have the church fight from Kingsmrn, ot hay surprise the marty with an elderitch god comeing out of the target like in Hellboy if you wanted a bossfight, and then have people in the church trying to flee now they know what they have been worshiping Second story: sounds like an inexperianced players and an inexperianced DM. The pets need to be something from an experianced DM Third story: there are Lattin Armican Dart Frogs less toxic than DM's girlfriend DMpcs: the PCs are playing 11 year olds. They know as much about romance as That Guys know about being decent human beings. This just cring upon cring upon cring. I thought JK Rowling being a Turf was a problem

The DM being passive aggressive with the ranger was the worst. Having the shopkeeper slap them for unblockable damage plus instantly removing medium armor (yay no agency, favorite trope) was definitely targeted. I would've gotten into a huge argument and likely left. You don't just drop a sudden "You lose + no counter" cutscene onto your players.

Smooching?! But in all seriousness, NPC drama can be fun to run, but only if the players and DM are on board with it. Hell, I have a campaign I run where my players love that my NPCs have lives beyond the player shenanigans because it makes the game more immersive for them, and if they can help or aggravate an NPC's problems, that makes it fun for them too. Although, their matchmaking shenanigans threw me for a loop. Like, they sometimes see how two NPCs interact with each other over a few sessions and go "omg, these two would be so cute together!" But we keep that part of the game wholesome, that's probably why I'm fine with it.

If you wanna run a cringey cutscenes as a DM, do it after the session when no one is around. Have I thought about what an NPC was doing after the characters left. Yeah, have I thought about the going on of my world right before ean adventure, heck yeah. Because that actually helps if your NPCs aren't static to you then that will come out in the session. If you kill X and the PCs don't realize that X is dating Y, well then there's a nice surprise for the next time they come across Y. Yesterday I was looking at Medusa and male Medusa and their children cause drama reasons and the idea of having a male Medusa attack the party and the female Medusa go on an enraged rampage if they succeed was amazing. But more importantly, the fact that Medusa lay eggs and those eggs are human except a slim chance one of the eggs is a male Medusa. And the only way to find out is that the Medusa is immune to petrification (which I won't tell them unless they roll a nice arcana or nature check) Now they have to figure out what to do with these toddlers who could be human but could also be a two steps away from murdering something. (A good nearby orphanage might help, but if the PCs do leave the kids, I'm definitely going to bring them up in a future campaign, two human teens protecting their monster bro who's "not evil they promise" just from the one cringey fanfic in my head of two Medusa finding their own love off screen. I've got some nice battles and story threads to bring up later side quests. (I could also have a preist kill the male Medusa and the party just deal with a really angry widow. Then the kids can be less there fault and more everyone fault. But I'll flesh that out more later.

Had a game where the DM had a huge crush on one of the PC. She (the PC) of course didn’t want to date anyone and is here for school… yet he ( the DM) was persistent… after her fifth time rejecting the DM ( he messsge me that he wants to TPK the party…) like dude…it’s dnd… why you bringing your personal crap into our game…. What did he end up doing? The PC had a back story with a romantic interest…. And guess who that Romantic ended up being, yes you guessed it, the DM turned that romantic interest into his DMPC, since he couldn’t get her IRL, he was determined to romance her Character ingame and kiss her romantically in game… to her cringe she refused to go for that story….so he EMOd out and had us fight 2 legendary creatures at once on a 40ft square on top of a mountain, one of those creatures was a dragon… guess we are going to get home brewed fireball forcing players to make 3 different saves… while the other legendary creature, A GOD and the first official BBEG was doing 3d12 damage in its attack roll… yup forced TPK…. Keep your love life away from dnd ….

Or have a bunch of weaker mooks pop out of the warp, or even the temple winds up being a massive hive of heresy as a number of the clergy wind up being heretics. So you wind up facing other humans who are corrupted by chaos too. DM should have taken a page from Tzeentch. It WILL happen either way, just some factors will differ.

I must say with the irritating game story, despite everything else that was crappy of the gm, a legendary reaction being “not a thing” is not really a strike against them. A DM is allowed to make new mechanics a thing in 5e. Yes, having it just rip off the pc’s arm was part of the bs railroad, and I don’t think it makes much sense for a werewolf to get it, but I can see other powerful creatures getting one or more extra reactions in a turn. A hydra gets one for every head, limited to opp attacks, why not a quickling duelist that gets like 3 parries?
