For story reasons, I can see how an orphan wouldn’t know a language of their race. Speaking Celestial in D&D is like Medieval people speaking Latin. Clerics would speak it, because their holy scriptures are written it. Nobles might speak it as well to separate themselves from the common rabble; Elvish or Sylvan are also possibilities in this case.

@@akmi1931 They said they made the character together. Also while it doesn't AUTOMATICALLY mean it, it's true that celestial is pretty much the latin of DnD. An AASIMAR growing up in a church has a pretty damn high likelyhood of speaking celestial in my book. Especially since usually you get a set number of languages from int and such, what else would the poor aasimar with no education but a religious be speaking? Abyssal? Both IC and OOC it makes logical sense. And with the "I was schooled growing up in a church" excuse would likely fly by most any human without even really being that suspicious. An oddity? Maybe, but "you're not human enough" for speaking a language that profession would specifically know? I dunno.

My first episode zero and only dnd anything I got to dip my toes into, I played a female half elf. The first lore of the area was "pig like people take women up into the mountains and impregnant them, this will probably happen to you too since you're the only female in the party and in call." and I left the discord forever and went to eat pizza in disgust and sad because I just wanted to finally play dnd. Why is that the first damn thing I hear with the first and ever dnd related thing I finally get to do.. ffs. All these horror stories sound so common, and I even have my first experience with it.. and this guy was my bf's coworker. (dw my bf wasnt too happy about it either, and he's an ex employee now anyway.) So I wasn't expecting it to happen, but now I see it happens pretty much anywhere.. Guess I'll be a male minotaur next.. idk, the "least" feminine thing I can think of that still sounds cool to be... Taurens in WoW are pretty cool I guess.. same concept.

I have a funny story similar to this I was playing on a West March with an Adventurers guild, where at the start of each Quests or Hunts we would gather at the Hall and then go do it. Playing an bubbly and probably too excited ranger, she had a lot of fun to kick the doors open (as she thought that was a important skills for all adventurers) Quickly she became a fear of the guild as she would do it at any hours, being the day, night, or whatever. One day someone decided to lock the doors and set a piton behind to make really sure it couldn't be open She lost 10ft of movement for that day after kicking the door, smashing her foot against it and shamefully open the second door to walk in

One of the systems I used to play has a book about naughty times. There are tables to roll sizes (male/female/non humanoid races), you can even roll out stats on how good (or bad) your character is in bed. The whole thing is really scientific. Tables of different acronyms for special body parts in different languages of this world. Because a Goblin would use other words to describe her lady parts than a dwarf would. There are also notes on how every culture feels about same sex relationships, interspecies and changing partners. The book is the opposite of erotic and you can use it, but you really don't have to. I believe the authors wrote this as a joke, but then it got popular. To be fair, it's kind of funny when players decide to get down to it, but just without any roleplay but instead opposing rolls like a PvP battle.

Mini horror story related to that last one: it definitely reminds me of my first TTRPG experience. I had made 4 characters at that point for games with friends that never came to pass. 3rd group comes around, I make my 5th character. At that point, I had been alternating genders per character, not thinking much of it. As it happens, this is time that the game actually finally happens; my first game, marked with constant "teasing" that I must be transgender for playing my character of an opposite gender. Got called all sorts of colorful names throughout the session, mainly by the GM though he made sure to emphasize this specific aspect of my character to players during every chance he got. Ironic bit ofc being that I had talked through multiple character ideas with the GM, & he had been there before that session day for character rolls and giving the character's backstory (of which he said backstories don't matter). You can probably fill in the blanks for how unenjoyable the rest of the game was. After years of watching Critical Role & smaller streams with excitement, my first actual game left me feeling a bit jaded. I knew of course that streams & home games are very much different realms, but I hadn't thought that would mean such weirdness as that.

Intro story: That's a bit too far for a nat 1. If you want the broken shelf, go for it, and a fair penalty would be to pay for repairs and replacements. Loot: The new player probably is coming from a solo-gaming mindset. Still probably needed the boot, but I'd try to have included more than scrolls for him if I'm dumping 10 items on a party. Railroad: Obviously or otherwise, don't make the players wander around if you are going to the railroad. I'm also not sure she even had a script, with how little planning there seems to be... Meltdown: I remember hearing this one before... GM is out to win when he should be looking for everyone to have fun. A rewrite to remove one busted character instead of overtuning is a good plan though. On a side note, I've looked into making a 5E grappling monstrosity out of a goliath unarmed fighter. The math gets scary if I get Enlarge cast on him... Chest: I got curious about this Arduin game, and although I could find a variety of interesting charts, which include where a crit lands, birthmarks, scars, etc. I couldn't find a size chart. I do agree with the OP though, why does that need to matter. As I'm typing it got worse and worse... The OP has some bad luck it seems... My table tends to just nod along and move on. Size charts in games like 5e are fine when they're guidance to give you a rough idea of a player race's proportions. A Dwarf can be buff or skinny but they're rarely even 5 feet tall. An Elf is usually slender but then a player can take inspiration from this and play a Mutant Bloodhunter built like a sh4t brick house thanks to doping. All of the size data is usually for reference and shouldn't be enforceable. In fact, even spell lists are for guidance purposes and there's a line somewhere that says it's fine to tweak or swap spell lists.

The loot gremlin might just be a relic of dealing with older editions of D&D. 5e does not assign values to most magic items, but previous editions absolutely did, so it would be feasible to tally up the total value of a haul and to divide it up so that everyone got an equal share. This was especially relevant in 3.5, where magic items started early and scaled up to being ridiculously powerful.

I also broke a few of them out of the habit of saying "that's gay" when they disliked something). I used to play mostly male characters, though it's pretty balanced lately, and they got the "haha that's weird!" jokes out of their system about it once they all decided to play female characters to meme on me as a joke, thinking I'd be bringing another dude to the table. Joke's on them, that was the time I came up with Celith, my dragonborn fighter, whom I'd described as a massive bronze-scaled lady with cleavage-plate to accentuate and show off her "massive attributes". She was hugely confident and capable of snapping the average man in half over her knee if they misbehaved, I loved my large lightning lizard babe.

I feel like some GM's just feel like this is a wargame, where the players fight the GM and the winner is the better one, so if the players aced the encounter, it means the GM 'lost'. Of course that's usually a pretty unhealthy way to play because it usually leads to adversity and sooner or later, the GM WILL give themselves an edge to 'win'. I agree with you. I've only been a player so far but my current GM is just proud of us when we win an encounter in a creative way that puts us at an advantage. One time when one of us had an idea to circumvent an encounter he straight up said "Oh damn, that's good. You know what yeah there is" I don't quite remember what the player was searching for as it was almost 10 years ago. But it's always a fun thing to outsmart the bad guys. Last session our GM said it's so fun that the last few times he had sprinkled in encounters that he himself hadn't thought of a solution just to see what we'd come up with.

I have a small issue with the story about the grappling monk. Specifically, the part where they're fighting the giant worm. I hate the argument that this guy makes that he should be able to grapple the worm because this is a world in which magic and monsters exist so why is that so ridiculous? I feel like it kind of sounds like a good argument to make when you first hear it but then you think about it for a second and realize that he's basically saying that because magic exists within the setting it means that he should be able to do whatever he wants. Because the thing they're arguing about has nothing to do with magic, so it follows that what he's saying is the mere existence of spellcasters within the setting means that nothing has to have any kind of logical throughline and that anything should be able to happen at any time for no reason. In this particular instance you could even apply the same reasoning to the worm, and just say that in a world where magic and a giant monster worm exists why is it so ridiculous to think that that worm can't be grappled. By the way, I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the GM here, just that the line of thinking the OP is applying is really bad and I've seen it used before in the past to justify some really stupid stuff.

I agree with that to a degree. I think with that story the DM nerfed the monk too much. You should make an encounter difficult for the player not counter their power to the point of irrelevance. If the monk specializes in grappling and the enemy is immune to grappling, the monk is left not doing much. It’s like if you’re a wizard and the enemy is completely immune to magic. It’s just not fun.

@@richarddarma1452 See I disagree with that too. I think it's a good thing for the GM to, very occasionally, design an encounter that's a hard counter to one of your players. It's a good way to mix things up and create a challenging encounter. I especially think that's the case when the player has a highly specialized build like this. To me, that's an inherent quality of specialized builds and part of the fun. Most of the time it's not going to matter all too much, sometimes it'll be AMAZING, and sometimes it's not going to work at all and you have to think on your feet to figure that shit out. Here, instead of figuring anything out to cope or adapt he just complained at the GM until he changed the encounter.

Its pathfinder, not dnd 5, game mechanic is not same, ok? But anyway, its really many ways to deal with grappler monk that makes sense. Most obvious is just stop doing 1 dude vs party combats, it makes every control bild too opt, not only monk. Just 1 good save or suck spell and results fore big bad evel dude is much more pathetic than grapple. If there are 3 or equal numbers monk cant ruin this fight. Second is just throw at him monster with grapple abilities who can revers grapple him and play on equipment terms. Tetori have many class buffs to grapple but monster can have some race staff even in monster manual (or you can design it by you own) and defenetly will have bonuses from size and strength. Or you can let him fight with some magma/negative energy/electric/else dude. So he can grap him and may even it will be really helpful but it will cost. And anyway sometimes players deserve to have epic win when all there abilities work well, arent they?

"Roll for What?" But in all seriousness loving your content. One of my favorite d&d horror stories with good tips. I do have a horror story though. Had a game where the dm was an old friend so I thought I'd be okay with joining. I made a half elf drow noble fighter samurai/Bear barbarian that I reflavored the rages as a divine energy that kept me protected from my destroyed kingdoms gods. The dm agreed and enjoyed the backstory but once I started he constantly made jokes about how the character was essentially a Mary Sue about how he didn't earn the powers that was given and that my character was 'edge-lord.' (Something I found out he called any character who was serious in mannerism, and was a personal frustration for me because he knew it bugged me.) As the campaign went on the other players were constantly spurred on to be goofier and goofier by the dm. Eventually he said he was canceling the game because the game turned to a "cesspool of human degeneracy" when most of the issues in the campaign were because of him when he put enemies named "Crotch Goblins," and such of the matter. He started another campaign and asked if I wanted to join and he stated it would be a much more serious game and I accepted, making a very serious Dwarven Arcane trickster rogue burglar as he wanted the characters to be neutral or evil because of "Shady things." Along the way I found issues that got worse and worse throughout the game, all of which I called him out on in private dms. Cutscening the players telling them what they were doing instead of presenting issues in front of them and letting them react, repeatedly making enemies ambush players with no chance to notice them (like having a blue dragon wyrmling attack players before initiative starts without giving a chance to see even when I specifically asked to make a perception check to look around the area), and worst of all being sarcastic at best, Spiteful most likely, or hateful at worst when he mentioned how a player disliked the high pitched Dwarven voice he used for a Dwarven blacksmith (So high pitched it was impossible to understand and he did specifically to make a joke.) and to every other player he spoke normally, then when I spoke to him he went back to the high pitched voice, only to follow it with "Wanna guess who made the complaint who found it annoying?" Safe to say, I am quitting all campaigns with the guy. In positive news, I have a fun campaign and another player who was having the same issues as I was-joining a "Serious game" only for it to be a complete joke. I loved his roleplay, and now he's joined my game as an undead warlock who brings an interesting foil to the generally good party as he is neutral and everyone loves playing with him. TL;DR, DM who rags on every other game while making complete cesspools of games is hateful when multiple players come forward to speak to him about wanting a more serious campaign and most of his jokes go too far, only to ignore the concerns to make even the game worse before I finally hit the last straw and quit every game I play with him.

Why would anyone make players roll for their characters’… shape? That shouldn’t even be relevant most of the time, and in the rare event it is, it should be decided by the player themself. It’s part of a fun little process some would call “getting to visualize the character you actually created.”

It was the first, and to this day one of the only, fantasy stories I'd ever read that starred two people who were middle-aged. Not only that but they were married, very much in love, with the husband taking care of the kids and the mom living in her own house up the mountain and working as a sorceress. It was such an awesome, unconventional dynamic that I rarely ever saw. I highly recommend the books, though they have a lot of very intense themes and can be absolutely heartbreaking.

Still found it reasonable not to charge his party members for everything he did because 1.) he was making bank by helping them regardless and 2.) despite being a money grubber, these guys and gals were his friends and cohorts in life or death situations. He wasn't going to penny pinch his budds just to make a few extra copper, especially since he relied on them as much as they did him.

Funniest Nat 1 I've ever had in a game was where we were trying to sneak through a guard encampment (the DM later told us that he has planned to eventually make us fight some guards but based on how well we rolled would reduce the amount. This dude was good on his feet.) A patrol was walking near, so we all made a Hide check. My buddy was the only one who failed with a Nat 1 so the DM said his character put his hands over his eyes and yelled "I'm hiding!" After we all had a good laugh for several minutes, the guards attacked us. I haven't played DND in well over 15 years and I miss it. Just too socially awkward to try and find people to play with.

Roll for what??! Speaking from personal experience, it sounds like the DM in the third story was under a lot of pressure, the meltdown sounded out of character. I have been in a similar position, where the party wanted to try a tactic that would trivialize a bossfight and I... might've said "no, you can't do that". It really sucked the air out of the room. I regretted being so stubborn afterwards and apologized to the party. I'm glad OP checked on the DM and tried to work it out. It would've been sad if they had lost a 10+ years friendship and an ongoing game over a rules kerfuffle.

Not technically harrassment, but this one time my now former DM decided to start my male character off in the session by waking up in a brothel, half naked, with a woman sprawled on top of him. Was the second session. Nobody asked me if that fits the character, if he visits brothels, is straight, or if I am comfortable with it (btw, that is a no, no, no and no in that order). Our house rule is both the players and the DM have to run anything sexual or PvP themed by the players that it concerns AND the DM if not in the loop already. I got out of it by claiming he was dragged in there by a friend and fell asleep drunk before anything happened, then he took his clothes and booked it. We did talk it out with the DM, but said DM also later ended up being a total jerk for other reasons and the group split in two.

DM Confession: I had a planned out scene in a campaign circa '10 (My gf at the time was playing as her Sorcerer and I had the PCs perusing about an abandoned cave with the evil kind of bandits that plunder and... yeah you get it) She agreed to allow the guys to be 'creeps' to the max and play out as bait for the perverted bandits, basically stumbling in the room of like 10 dudes and going 'Oops this not the bathroom?' lol. The group had spied in the room these guys were in and they planned an attack, the whole idea was something like "We're gonna set these guys on fire with their own ale and watch them burn." Wizard mage handed the casket, party bursts open the door, and Sorc (Gf playing hostage) burning hands them all. I called it right there and allowed them to win with the creeps burning into a pile of ash. Tasteful? Inappropriate? I always look back at this encounter as one of those 'Yeah.. that was probably un-needed lol' but they had fun punishing the wicked. Moral of the story (TL;DR) Always bring up suggestive themes prior to RPing them. If one person is uncomfortable because you didn't communicate it can have lasting repercussions so just avoid it. @Crispy Love these bro. Keep up the excellent work. I'd give you inspiration any day.

If they really wanted that wurm to be Harder to grapple so its a more difficult encountervmake it cover itself in mucus like slimy worms do, make it slippery, or maybe have it start burrowing with the monk still on its back so they start getting dragged against the rocks. You want a story about a loot ninja? This was maybe my third game of Pathfinder. Similarly it was the first time I had played with a guy that is currently a good friend. I was playing a Bard. Also in the party was a Fighter, a Paladin, a Fighter that wished she were a Paladin, and a Barbarian. I was essentially the party's only proper support caster and had supported my party liberally. Unfortunately for me not all party members had such generous mindsets. The Barbarian was playing a kleptomaniac... I was fine with it initially. I sat silently as he took up time to literally rip gold plates off the walls of the crypt. I objected, albeit barely, when he would grab all the loot of everything we killed then spend thirty minutes at a time arguing in circles about how he deserved it. I was even largely quiet when he absorbed any gold we passed like a dragon without a hoard. But then we came across the one thing I actually needed. Some context. I'm not just playing a Bard. I'm playing a Bard that privately worships the Lantern King. The Fae God of light-hearted pranks. A lot of my pranks were simple, easy, and had no lasting negative effects. On average it was casting Prestidigitation to give someone bad breath, Create Water to make their socks wet. My personal favorite prank was casting Mending on a stone door the Dwarf was trying to break down. I only cast once and passed all the checks to prevent him from noticing. To this day he thinks his character was suffering fatigue and was seeing things. A few extra swings of his pickaxe and the prank was undone. More context. Anyone that's played this particular module will recognize this encounter. First thing in the dungeon I had essentially a hanging cave squid drop on me. As a result of being nearly eaten alive my Bard suffered -4 to his Charisma. His most important stat. That affected everything from casting to performances. We had just fought something when the Barbarian instantly took all the loot. The GM described several unidentified potions. The Barbarian only allowed my Bard to hold them briefly to identify them, then pocketed them again. One of the potions was a potion of Eagle's Splender, and the other potion was a love potion. Eagle's Splendor is a spell that gives you +4 to your Charisma. Exactly what my Bard needed to even the odds if it came to it. Every time I asked for it the Barbarian said "But what if I want to sell it" before laughing at my Bard for being smaller than him. Important to note that I identified the pot of Eagle's Splendor first and was honest about that, but when the Barbarian was a dick I identified the Love Potion and told him it was a healing potion. Joke's on the fucking Barb that asshole. He got knocked out in combat so I plundered his bags for exactly that potion of Eagle's Splendor. He stabilized on his own and demanded healing from my Bard, the only party member left with any spells to cast. My Bard told him to fuck off and drink his healing potion, that he doesn't do favors for thieves. The Barb argued with me for nearly five minutes then finally drank the 'healing' potion... Just in time for a skeleton to walk around the corner. He made eye contact with the skeleton, the potion took effect, and he was smitten. I personally saw to it that he was cured of the affliction. But get fucked Barb.

In the campaign we just finished up I was the loot donkey. As in, I had a magic item that let me carry everything at -90% weight, and I was quite strong, so I was the on in charge of carrying the loot we found. I was also the only magic user so I was the one who figured out what shit did, carried it all around and noted down what we had. One of the others took care of the gold. All loot was for the party. All money was for the party. We'd each have enough personal gold that we'd top up from time to time for our own purchases, but for big things like new armour or weapons or enchantments, we'd pool all the money. By the end of the campaign we had about 100,000 gold worth of items being ferried around by my character. A mermaid.

Intro: I don't like using nat 1 or 20's outside of combat as well, but I would never punish them for rolling a 1. At worst, the player's character should have tripped and cause things to rattle, but other than spook the shopkeeper, nothing worst. It's like that "gritty realism" game where high rolls gave OK results but low rolls were heavily punished. "bUt It's mY LooT": Selfish is a great word for this guy. Even in multiplayer games you need to share the loot and have whoever can use gear better than others for one reason or another. No idea who this guy's excuse for this behavior was. Just FOLLOW the Railroad: I feel like these DMs don't want to admit they're railroading, so they don't give the players the information they should. Like, at all. Even non-railroading DMs let the party know where the inn is if they ask NPCs. And why wouldn't a human church teach celestial? It's literally the language of their gods. Great. A DM MELTDOWN: As Crispy said, a conversation on how to fix problems are needed. OP said they're willing to rework the character, and if true, the DM should have taken them up on that offer and have a character the OP can continue enjoying and frustrate the DM less. And yeah, the DM being frustrated wasn't the issue, it was how he managed it that was the issue, letting it boil over rather than talking to the cause of it and try to lessen it through a civil conversation. Roll For... Chest Size?: Wow. I know nothing about Arduin myself, so I have no idea if that is the case or not (though if it was, than I'd imaging the Wikipedia page of it would have it listed under controversies). Still, it's dumb if that system is in there just for the woman and not the men too (and dumb in general), but the DM should have accepted that OP didn't want to do so and shouldn't have forced himself onto OP's character, or kill them for not sleeping with him (the start of an incel). As for the last story, fuck the father who had a character AS'ed in front of his children. That makes him a terrible DM and father.

Yeah, I tried looking it up and Arduin doesn't seem to have a female body proportion chart. The closest I could find was that Arduin has a character appearance chart where you can roll for hair color, eye color, birthmarks, skin color, scars, and special features. Not only was body proportions never mentioned in the chart, the chart was completely optional. I'm willing to bet that DM brought that chart every time they would host an Arduin campaign for the sole purpose that one of the players not only decides to play a female character, but also has never played or heard of Arduin before.

Stories like that last one make me realize just how good I have it with my current Pathfinder group. I'm a guy who's in my second campaign with this group, and both of my characters have been female so far. Thankfully, they've never made it weird in the slightest.

Just follow the railroad - what's the DM going to do when the dice decide they're going to fail a roll that needs to succeed or succeed a roll they were meant to fail in order to stay on the tracks? "NO! You're rolling the dice wrong! You're not allowed to get a 1 (or 20)! Stop being so disobedient!"

I generally use a dice when deciding if a character is male or female, it removes most of the bias I might have for a character concept, this is usually the last step I take before writing up a backstory. Generally I decide what class/race I want to play, since gender has no real mechanical impact, I roll it with things like weight and height. I have so far played 3 male characters and 2 female, never had any complaints or issues with my portrayals of any of them. I usually don't worry too much about sexuality, but inspired by John Cena saying that Peacekeeper is bisexual, I figured that this probably actually also would make sense for the 1 rogue(/wizard multiclass) I have thus played. But since that campaign has been in an unexpected hiatus with no sign of continuing in near future, that probably won't come up any time soon. The rogue in question being more of a spy than a criminal, having been an agent for the nation he worked for and working more in infiltrating high-class parties and the such. He has a Charisma of 15 with the intention of going Swashbuckler/Bladesinger, all the results of some interesting/good dice rolls (17/16/13/13/11/10). being a half-elf which upped the 13 to 15 for charisma.

For this time I wanted to ad one or two things about sex in ttrpgs. I don't know that system, but I know systems that have optional rules for sexual attributes and I play a systems with my group that has such optional rules. When we found them we had a good half hour of laughing and roling how our charachters would look following this rules and then simply put them aside and ignored that part again. For us a group with male and female players that sometimes play the other gender and even one trans girl in our group we decided to do such things a bit more open. Its fair in game for us as long as no one gets creepy or roleplays a sex scene openly. You can flirt, talk about what you like and when you get an npc to agree its a fade to black as the rest of the group goes on with you rejoining a bit later. But thats just how it works for us and most of our group never use that at all. In general I would say that its good to start by talking about bounderies. Be open with such things when you first meet up or in session 0. What things are okay, where is the line, some groups will never even flirt, others are somewhere in the middle like us and a few might even accept sex rp when the plot fits. (I read an adventure once where the player had to dig for some shade on a politian and to get in his house they took the chance to take part in an orgy he had in his house. Strange but I can see that work.) But you need to make sure what your group is okay with before you start and never ever get strange towards players or their characters.

Story 1 - Firstly, daddy forcing a gamestore to babysit a kid. Uggggh. Second, I like this loot system. Just give what could be useful. Third, I am not paying a wizard to be a party member. That is just selfish play, and would make me not want to play with them.

I have been playing female characters (I'm a guy) for most of my time in RPing. Started back when I was doing Chat RPs around 2000 and just always have done so. It's really just that I tend to get better inspiration for female characters though, and occasionally (very occasionally) I'll switch it up. Thankfully I've never encountered situations like in that last story. I have limited exposure to RP groups outside of my immediate circle of friends though. On the other side of that coin, one of our group is a woman who almost always plays male characters. I can only assume for similar reasons that I play females.

Thankfully, all of my games have been played with irl close friends, so no one has been weird about women characters. My first actual character was a female viking warrior who was adventuring to get back to strength after she got severely injured and knocked back to level one. She later became an npc that the entire party had very respectful crushes on. I much prefer playing guys, but it is fun to occasionally step out of my comfort zone.

I’m gonna wizard I do have one small counterpoint. If he’s going to buy identify so that he can use it to identify all the loot for the party and he’s not buying it for himself he’s buying it for the party. As such I don’t think he’s out of line when he asked the party to chip in for some thing that will be useful for all of them.
