From my understanding Ninja Theory actually wanted to make it more like og dmc but Capcom legit told them to zero in on the emo traits of his character. Not to excuse the writing but Capcom deserves the middle finger fir this far more than Ninja theory does.

*In ninja theory defence:* if they had full creative freedom with the project, then i think for a fact that we would have atleast received a better product or better structured, but like it or not the fanbase, ninja theory and capcom lack of communication really effected this game quality

Funny thing is that this wouldn't have happened if Keiji Inafune hadn't pushed the company to "be more western" with their games at the time. Though, I feel like Ninja Theory gets too much flack for this game when Capcom pushed for the majority of what we got in the final product. Though the director's attitude in interviews did NOT help at all.

I think you overestimating the negative reception of the game based on a vocal minority of the fanbase. In spite of an active boycott. DmC still managed to get universally good reviews, outsell DMC1-3 and everyone at capcom and ninja theory have publicly stated they had a blast on DmC's production and both studios have stated they want to work together again on the sequel

The thing is it's hard to balance a games' story between villainazing the idea of mental disorders and making it look cool, no-one wants to be the crazy person. And even so most media writters haven't expirienced this and goes by how they 'think' it effects someone i, i had friends play alice game and arkham, they were dealing with depresion at the time, but they didn't talked about it it eventually got worse to the point of them not eating and sleeping when there parents asked them about it they said "I'm not crazy, I'm not the guy who twitches in the train, I don't wanna be strapped to a bed and get fed medicine, I don't want to have illusions of killing you, I don't want to be 'THAT' kind of person" good news is that they eventually got help. All I'm saying is that the crazy/ mentally disturbed person has a lot of stigma that prevents people for getting help

I don't mind it, but if I was personally writing it, I would keep it away from the "oh no, you murdered tons of humans!" angle. I'm not really fond of that, but I do think that issue should be brought up at some point and maybe even have notMundus be the one human Donnie and HackerMan go to kill, but Dante stops them. I think your idea of HackerMan playing into Donnie's delusions and feeding him conspiracies is a great way to go, and it even justifies the ending fight between the two: Dante stops them from killing notMundus, Donnie thinks he's bullshitting, then at the end figures out he's been manipulated, fights HackerMan, and goes to Dante to apologize and reveal his real name. Then he takes off, not feeling worthy to even ask to be part of the Devil's Never Cry, until he grows up and carves out his own identity. I also don't really like Kat re-treading the same ground as Donnie with the whole "my name is Lady" thing. That feels eye-roll worthy, and I'd just be waiting for some dummy to walk over and go "my name is Arkham" or "my name is Trish" or "my name is Sparda," you know?

You know what, that actually works pretty well. One of the things that's hardly ever touched upon is how drab the world looks. I know Gears of War showed off the kinds of gritty worlds the unreal engine could do but man that looks is so...blah. But if the characters are warping reality and seeing things that aren't there, then the world looking drab could also work to establish the setting. If Dante were to be rehabilitated at the end of the game, color up the world a bit. Hell, even give it more anime-like tones. We know the Unreal engine is capable of it because Guilty Gear Xrd uses it and that looks amazing.

Going off of your idea for the final confrontation, You have Dante walk into Kyle Ryder’s (or whatever you called him) office and you see El Donte, Vergin and Kat turn around. You see Donte look up at him, thinking that he’s just another security guard or something and he lets out a chuckle and wears that shit eating grin. Kat looks just confused, and Vergin looks horrified for a brief second before composing himself. Donte spews out some random insult at both Dante and Kyle, but Dante just ignores it and replies to him by asking who they are. Donte says that his name is Dante and that’s Vergil, which makes Dante laugh. “And let me guess, that’s…Lady?” to which Kat replies by saying no, her name’s Kat, and Dante makes a remark about her at least having a little bit of sense. As the scene goes on, Donte argues with Dante, who throughout it explains to him that Donte is living a lie, and explains how Dante actually rescued him from the institution that we saw Donte being held in in the first teaser trailer for DmC. Turns out Donte’s an artificial demon, like the Secretaries from DMC2. Eventually, though, Donte could tackle Dante down that huge hallway that they’re standing in front of and a fight would ensue that’s more like the Nero vs Dante fights from DMC4 where Dante’s mostly playing with his food and trying to get Donte to release all that pent up rage so he can calm down, come down to earth and they can properly talk. Dante could perhaps explain that Kyle is a demon worshipper and headed the experiments performed on Donte, and that he has every right to kill him. But he doesn’t want Donte to kill innocent people, so he reminds him that he still has a life to live and that he can try to put all this behind him. Dante then goes back to the office where Kat’s unconscious and Kyle is talking to Vergin about what to do. Vergin sees Dante, maybe they exchange a line or two, and then Vergin opens a portal with the fake Yamato to get away. Dante pursues him and then you get the final fight against Vergin as Dante. Dante kicks his ass, kills him, and then goes back to the office where Donte could do a few things. He either refuses to kill Kyle, letting Dante kill him instead. Donte would then tell Dante that he’s right and he wants to try and live a normal life, although he acknowledges that he could likely go to prison for the massacres he’s committed, if he’s lucky. But either way, he’ll try to live the normal life that he always wanted. Dante asks him if he’ll keep the name Dante, to which Donte changes his name. I saw someone call him “Matteo” one time, and that could work. Or, he does kill Kyle, but tells Dante it wasn’t entirely out of revenge. It was because he probably isn’t the only test subject that Kyle had to create artifical demons. Donte says he wants to go and find any others and save them, while taking out anyone else like Kyle that’s responsible or gets in the way. He becomes a sort of vigilante in a way. That was the best I could come up with.

I stopped the vid at 0:36, and remembered a chat me and my brothers had, and we thought the same you just said when it first was shown off back in 2010. .DMC Dante and Virgil could have been clones or artificial Demon like Trish, made by Mundus to be weapons, like the King of Hell did with Frosts or Blitz, Hell even Arius made lucia and Agnus did a zoo.

I do think it is funny that NT went on saying that the old Devil may cry was emulating 2000s action movies, when originally it was a RE4 that went to spooky, with a dash of Space Adventure Cobra, and that old Dante would stick out like a sore thumb with people would laugh at him for his white hair and big red coat. They wanted to do things more modern and cool. While DmC ripped off from the likes of They live, Dark City, The Crow, Alice: Madness Returns, Futurama, Super Mario Bros film, and dress him up in Punk, no scratch that, dress him up like Adam Sandler playing Little Nicky take a look, kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5rcmmupbtKmobc . With the face of, in the first trailer anyway Tameem Antoniades, you know one of the Founders of NT?.

You know after playing this game I had a thought. Had this been a story set within the original Devil May Cry continuity but about a young man saved by the real Dante and inspired by him but making the mistake to forego his humanity to gain power but learning an important lesson and doing the right thing at the end, I think would also have been better than what we got. Also if one doesn't exist then I'd like to see a video on the Alice games. American McGee is working on plans for a third game with fans getting to be involved. Imagine if the DmC reboot allowed fans of the classic games to have a say and help make a game the fans would want. ... ...I'm just doing my part in trying to help get a potentially good game get traction by spreading the word.

1 - I think you were more on point with "The DMC reboot should have just been its own franchise." 2 - I personally enjoyed DMC, I don't think it is perfect or better than the original. But I enjoyed the combat and level design. The Limbo concept (a twisted alternate plane of reality that is basically alive and actively trying to kill you along with the demons) is really cool, even if the boss fights were a downgrade, and the anti-corporate metaphor becomes heavy handed. I did like rebooted Dante's character arc of being this cynical disaffected street punk, who gets coaxed into a rebellion/revenge for his mother, softens and finds his moral center in contrast to his ultimately conceited brother. While I didn't like how Sprada was changed from a rebel to a guy who was simply sleeping with the enemy. I ended the game wanting to know more about the lore, Eva and how angels fit into this 3 - I really don't see it in terms of reboot Dante trying to act like original Dante. Similar to the Tomb Raider and Prince of Perisa reboots, these are very different characters. So I had the dissonance to see it as mostly own thing/a different interpretation

Lemme just say, I mean no disrespect when I say this, but this is far and away a *MUCH* more of a mean spirited, unfun, bastardization of the Devil May Cry story than DMC itself. Seriously. It's kind of nested in the same incubator as all those "Ash is really in a coma and Pokemon aren't real" theories that kind of miss the point of a work. I mean, we'd be presumably controlling fake Dante for the duration of the game, yes? But then he's the bad guy and we're taking control of real Dante at the 11th hour? That the worst from a game design stand point. But worse than that, you miss the point of this being a reboot of the games. That was the mission statement for better or worse (much, much worse). When I clicked on this video, I was under the immersion that you'd put your nose to the grind and hammer out an actual alternative reboot that works with the mission statement given to Ninja Theory. It's no fair if you just say "I won't DO a reboot. THAT'S the trick, haha!" From what I've heard, NT didn't even want to do the reboot in as drastic a way as it came out, but were rather egged on by Capcom. And again, I mean no disrespect, but why not try playing in the same parameters as Ninja Theory if you ever make an alternative to this video? Not "defending" them or whatever. I just think it'd be more fair than putting the ol "it was all a dream" uninspired, fix-it that has littered the Internet since the stone age. Again, no disrespect. Still a fan. Cheers.

"good bye! and when you do come back, give my regards to my son, will you?" I think that could have worked, have the entire game with "Dante" and "Vergil" talking about how Mundus killed their mom and trapped their dad in hell (never mention their names or show their faces), when the final battle begins and Mundus shows his true form, have it being the Mundus from DMC1, mad as shit because "Dante" opened the hellgate, and now "he" can escape...and then you give us the plot-twist, THE Dante appears, and makes fun at his son for taking his name, and that ridiculous haircut. Vergil turns out to actually be the REAL Vergil who has been manipulated "Dante" this entire time to open the hellgate, so the real Dante tells his son to clean up his own mess, and so the final battle begins, with Dante fighting Mundus again (in cutscenes, like how he fought The Savior in DMC4), while "Dante" fights his uncle. "Dante" eventually wins, but refuses to kill Vergil, who before going says "tsk, I guess it will be son versus son, then", and "Dante" and his father manage to seal Mundus again. After the whole mess is finished, Dante congratulates his son, althrough he "still a punk", while "Dante" tell his dad that now he remembers everything, but he still refuses to use his real name because "Sparda is such a pussy name". I know, it sounds like bad fanfiction, but is still better than what we got.

On the one hand, your suggestion implies a MGS 2 level bait and switch, but in reverse. Whereas, apt use of the SH3 cutscene, the revised storyline could be almost Silent Hill in its execution. Personally I think this should have either been a new IP _or_ rework the main character into Nero and start a spin off series for him directly.

It would be better for his character if he simply grew into his own after talking with dante than becoming a villain at random.

The4thSnake Placing Dante in a scenario with a human killing demon would end with him blowing the kids head off full stop. Anything less than that would be strange to say the least considering how he reacted to every violent demon in the series. It'd be an odd protagonist to situate the plot behind and would leave me wondering what Dante really contributed aside from tying the game the main series. Exactly like DMC4 actually.

4:05 except Itsuno's Dante not really same guy as in DMC 1 and DMC 2. Character wise. This could work as the perfect nero story set 3 years before dmc 5. Dante call nero regarding a case he wants him to work on a series of murders and kidnappings all linked to mystic artifacts and a ghostly figure using a sword and guns; believing there is a copy cat or dante being framed nero agrees and along side the recently recruited nico goldsrein they set out in search of the truth. During the investigation the stumble across kat a young conspiracy theorist and wicca practioner who is roaming the area suddenly demons attack and nero fends them off; meeting kat she tells them of the possible conection the demons have to a man named kyle ryder a banker and business man rumored to have been involved in many supernatural related cases. Granted nero and nico decide to follow the lead while we learn kat can see into limbo( pocket dimension hellscape) and can open portals into limbo nero fights off many of the " minions" of kyle ryder all the while we learn of kat's past she was an orphaned gifted magic proficience and could see demons true form even when hidden she reasoned thats why she was orphaned which nero sympathizes all the while on ocasion making comments about her "guardian angel" phineas her only friend who ends up taking hostage by demons they rescue phineas who makes offhanded remarks about nero almost like having met before. The eventually find kyle ryder and its revealed that he had been killed by the same white ghost who and proceed to kill phineas in front of kat nero faces the ghost and a group of his fiends nico and kat fighting them of the best they can only to be faced by lady at the last minute having been sent by dante as backup when nero hadnt returned a previous call to report progress during the whole phineas rescue. Turns out ryder has and item known as the mask of gnosis which has the power to grant then user mystical knowledge including how to create permant dimension merger but can only be use by someone touched by limbo itself or by its denizens. The team with the use of kat's portals the make it into limbo proper where they find kat and a alive phineas who turns into the ghost from before stating his name to be archon a phantom demon of limbo with desires to merge his realm and the human realm to create a new realm where he rules. by this point its revealed that archon had a hand in saving kat from the orphanage killing her tormentors and taking the young girl under his wing; under the guise of phineas he befriended the girl anf treated her like family but by doing so could be with her as he wasnt powerful enough to take her with him so he deviced the plan of using the mask to create a world kat and long desired free from her pain and torment were they could rule together; being a creature of limbo kat gained her sight due to her exposure of archon having already a afinity for magic he manipulated her fragile perception of reality into think demons in leagued with kyle ryder had been hunting her when in reality it was innocent humans made into limbo phantoms by archon the truth both shatters kat and drives her deep into the madness taking the mask in a attempt to right her wrongs and the merger begins a horde of phantoms attack nico and lady while nero faces archon in one final bout deafeting him but not killing him as he vanishes leaving nero to face and empowered kat trying to reach to what little humanity she has left but her mind could take the toll with archon reappering and bonding withnkat via the mask as a result shattering the mask and stoping the merger. Kat lies comatose on the floor with nero, nico and lady who comment irony how a demon showed more love to kat a human than most humans do to the fellow man. While the experience tragic it furthers neros resolve to fight to protect people like kat and other like from demons who would use them for their own end. The trio leave kat in a hospital where nero visits her on ocasion hoping shell recover only for to have woken up and vanish doctors said that she had made a full recover and she had insisted on leaving with no word on her whereabouts since. End credit scene 6 months after dmc 5 we see a young woman walking through a lively city at night she heads into an alley where a group of demons seem to be feeding only for a the woman to conjure a broadsword and short barrel shotgun witha ghostly armor covering her she kills the demons she walks out the alleyway into the moon light we see her face covered by shadows dressed in a hoodie under a trenchcoat dressed in a openshoulder pirate blouse a skirt with slits on the side, long thigh boots, long fingerless sleeves and muted makeup carryng a satchel she takes off her hood as says: i wonder how nero's been, well that can wait theres things to do and ghost to find isnt that right my angel and its reveled to be an older kat who has been reborn as an artificial demon by bonding with archon. So far the idea was to have a sequel game with nero post dmc 4 wil while still having his arc in dmc 5 intact. Not to mention it helps to establish his dynamic with nico in dmc 5 and have this game build his interacrion with lady who out the main trio of dante, trish and lady; he is only had interaction with dante and trish so having lady be a part of this pitch helps to futher the rapport leading to the scene of nero taking with trish and lady about vergil gives it alittle more importance other than the paralel between nero and lady. And by integrating kat into the main timeline allows nero to have his own adventures outside fortuna and redgrave city giving nero more experience by the point of dmc 5 events as well as have a minor paralel between kat qnd lucia being inversions of their story while luciaand trish were demons who became more human, kat is a human who becomes more like a demon having gained her abilites similarly to credo and agnus as alto angelos while being like neros own devil trigger where her power becomes her armor and weapons along with her magic becoming more powerful and diverse.

The thing is it's hard to balance a games' story between villainazing the idea of mental disorders and making it look cool, no-one wants to be the crazy person. And even so most media writters haven't expirienced this and goes by how they 'think' it effects someone i, i had friends play alice game and arkham, they were dealing with depresion at the time, but they didn't talked about it it eventually got worse to the point of them not eating and sleeping when there parents asked them about it they said "I'm not crazy, I'm not the guy who twitches in the train, I don't wanna be strapped to a bed and get fed medicine, I don't want to have illusions of killing you, I don't want to be 'THAT' kind of person" good news is that they eventually got help. All I'm saying is that the crazy/ mentally disturbed person has a lot of stigma that prevents people for getting help

It’s an alternate version/universe of Dante in all honesty I like the way it turned out. Two Dante’s one that’s over the top goofy and cool and stylish ! And one that’s more realistic a teenage Dante fighting with his self because he doesn’t understand his heritage, being “emo” I think If they played on that a little some people wouldn’t just “like” this version everyone would love it. “A son cleaning up his fathers mess..” Ok Dante said that in Dmc3 but turn that saying into a story.. also it would’ve been really cool if devil trigger was also an angel trigger when you activate devil trigger everything goes into chaos I’d also give the weapons a more demonic look while also making Dante’s jacket more devilish when you switch to angel trigger your more quick instead of everything floating and stoping you send a shockwave out and anything caught in the blast gets doesn’t attack you or something while you phase around cutting down the other enemies

It would have been a good flip on the "human sells their soul for power " that the classic series was becoming too reliant on. DmC would have worked better had they played more with Dante's original concept. Dante was originally a cop named Tony Redgrave when DMC1 was an RE project. Bringing that back would have been a good way to flesh out Dante's character as well as respecting the roots of the franchise. DMC did try this in one of the light novels were he was an amesiac mercenary named Tony so that could have fit DmC's tone. Sometimes you catch more flies with honey.

here is my take on Dante: make him a total asshole just to push everyone away from him since he is carrying the weight of his trauma and make it focus on him, let's put him in a journey on how he made his demon hunting shop; first is his first encounter with JD Morrison then his first demon hunting assignment where he needs to stop Mephistopheles from making deals which led to his plans of making his own hell on earth by laying the seeds of conflict along with the used of an ancient mirror which if one of you watched OUAT (once upon a time) that has the ability of releasing a human's darkest desire which led to having savage animalistic behavior.

But yeah making the shitty reboot entirely its own thing would have curbed the greatest sin of trying to murder/replace an iconic character like Dante before his story was properly concluded. I don't get why fans of the shitty reboot don't get it. It was the first game I ever played in the franchise. It has one of the best combat systems I've experienced in a hack in slash game with excellent camera control where enemies only attack if they're in visual frame, opening up a huge ability to manipulate the camera for combos using weapons you want. Speaking of weapons, there's tons of them, and transitioning between them is smooth. You can cancel attacks and do various loops by jumping off enemies, allowing for some insane combos. Level design is so amazing that it's an argument against open world games. The plot is pretty mundane and the dialogue is cringe, but at least Dante has some actual character development throughout the game instead of "muh one liners and muh pizza" for the whole fucking thing. Objectively speaking, it's a good game. The only people who think it's so shit are those like you, who have nostalgia boners for the previous games in the franchise, who can't fathom there being two different timelines. Why not think of it as a spinoff franchise? I think Persona is weeb trash, but I love Shin Megami Tensei games.

So what? Does that really nullify all the positive components this game had? I loved teen titans. Then randomly in season 5, cartoon network cut funding and the show ended mid-plot point. A few years later, a reboot was launched called Teen Titans GO, which cartoon network made very clear "this is the future of teen titans, fuck that old show and the people who like it". I still view the 2 as different universes, even though it was the future of the franchise, even though it replaced the old stuff I loved, because the 2 are VERY different products with VERY different character traits. I don't see how you can't apply the same line of thinking towards the dmc reboot and old dmc games.

Honestly I think this rewrite of yours could have been handled better. To me this video comes from a place of hate then love for the series. You could've actually tried to work with was given in the reboot and make a few tweaks that reboot Dante's design, the tone, and vergil's motive if you liked. But to go with the wholw mental health message and making reboot dante a syndrome knock-off feel's off. I get that your trying to say this reboot Dante is trying to "imitate" classic Dante but you could say that for any rebooted character or adapted character from game to film or tv like saying movie Sonic is "trying to hard to be like modern video game Sonic". Now i'm not say you should like the reboot because that's your opinion, i'm just saying that if you think that the character and story was wasted potential why actually try to make this story and character better. Keep in mind Reboot Dante in the D.m.C. was this version's origin story and if he was getting a sequel he could have evolved into the Dante veteran fans like yourself knew and loved.

One of which is fixed by the end. And I'm sorry but this whole Spec Ops May Cry thing is just an excuse to shit on DmC and that game was already shat upon more than enough, most of it undeservedly.
