Hey everyone, I just installed mine on my 511 yesterday. Something to reinforce from the video, do a dry fit test of the breather prior to install with the sealant. My DMD breather needed considerable shaving down with a file to fit into place. Just a heads up. Cheers DM, again, great video. -Ryan

MrRopcean Hi Ryan, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, unfortunately there have been a few engines where the head casting is oversized at the inlet cam area. The breather fits as designed beside the exhaust cam, but may need some filing on these engines to fit in the inlet cam area. Glad you have it all in and running, no more oil from the air filter 👍

Hey, love the look of this breather, really nice solution, i do however have a mechanical question. There are multiple solutions to the "oil issue" on the 449/511, this one seems the easiest, but could you give a short explenation on why this fixes the issue? The original outlet is from the crankcase lower down, and implementing this breather would mean that the lower outleat has to be closed off. Does this negativly effect the engine in any way, create vacuum? Great videoes !

+Scandy Husky Hi Scandy, thanks for the message. These engines breathe hard and create lots of blow by, a result of the single compression ring piston. The transmission mounted breather is flawed as the engine design stores all oil in the transmission area, so you have large volumes of oil local to the breather port waiting to be carried out of the hose. Moving the port to the head area reduces the amount of oil available near the breather port. I also designed the inlet on the breather to be a larger diameter to slow gas flow and help 'drop' oil behind. There's no negatives to moving to this location, as any pressure or vacuum is still free to transfer from the transmission to the engine area via the primary gear case. My motor has run first with my DIY solution and now with my DMD breather for around 200hrs without issues.

+Scandy Husky That would be me 👍 You may see some occasional spots of oil on the filter foam after installation, depending on wear in your particular motor, but you won't get oil running out into the airbox and down onto the motor. Thanks for the messages.

I have watched your mod vids for the te511 and have done the butterfly removal and have done my own version of a breather install just today . Instead of drilling the blank plug like you had previously , i had drilled a hole into the same rubber "D" in which you install your breather kit . i just used a hard plastic 3/8 elbow which i bought from autobarn , and used the ultrablack permatex silicone to make sure it stays in place . Just wondering if there was any particular reason you changed from your original brass elbow solution ? problems etc?

Ian Taylor Hi Ian, We had another guy on our Husky FB page do your version for a breather, it did work for him also. The main reason I changed was for ease of fitment. Removing the core plug and tapping the thread required a certain level of skill, but the new breather design makes it easy to fit with basic tools at home. The design also allowed me to make the inlet port larger than the outlet port and hopefully drop as many liquid oil droplets as possible on the way out.

Even if you're using one of the best heat resistant plastics, polyethylene terephthalate. It still has a 255 celcius melt point. I would recommend either brass fitting or DMD breather. Plastics do not hold up very well in high heat.

Hi! I'm trying to understand how this breather works. Why do you connect the lower part of the tube to the breather instead of the upper one? The reason is that you want to eject only the oil which is in the upper part of the engine, isn't it? (I'm asking this question because I need to solve the oil problem)

It works because where the breather is moved to has a lot less oil in the gasses up at the top of the motor. Also, the design of the new breather has a large entry port to slow gas speed and drop any liquid oil. The lower original port diameter is too small and near all the gearbox oil. When gasses are passed out of the port they carry out the oil with them and wet the air filter. The DMD breather stops this on most engines unless they are very badly worn. 👍 All bikes with this design engine (BMW G450X, CCM GP450 & the Husqvarna 449-511) suffer from the same problem.

Where does that breather hose actually go? Is it just connected to the transmission to nothing else or is it supposed to be connected on each side? (Nothing really to do with the dmd, just somehow lost that hose and not sure if the other end goes anywhere)

The original hose goes from the transmission port to the air filter upper body. With the DMD breather kit fitted, it runs from the side of the head to the same location on the air filter, and the transmission port is sealed off with the bung provided. 👍

Hey dangermouse, I have a big question man. My SMR 511's engine locked up and I'm not sure why. I did a lot of things to it apart form the engine. The only thing I have done to the engine is install the engine breather and I haven't had any problems out of that. I also did remove the secondary butterfly, but haven't changed the TPS yet. Well, when I took it for a test ride I rode for about two hours running the old fuel out and I had no issues, other than the idle needing to be turned up. Everything checked out with the improvements I had made. The electrical system was weak I could tale, because my horn wasn't working and the light was dim, I figured after riding for a while the system would get a full charge. Well as I was running about 60 or so and the throttle slowly gave out and my back wheel locked up. I pulled in the clutch and pulled over to the side. The starter relay would just click and get really hot. So I replaced the battery to be safe and tested the starter and all checked out ok. I tried to turn the flywheel manually and it is hung up. It will turn a little toward to front of the bike, but not toward the rear like it should. Idk why it locked up on me...any advice or suggestions?? I always change the spark, oil, filter, and do regular maintenance on it like I should. My next move was to take the cylinder head off and see what I see.

+Matthew McGriff Hi Matthew, very sorry to hear about the failure. If you are having charging issues, I'd be removing the LH engine cover and looking forward a possible damaged stator. The screws can work loose inside and get carried around by the flywheel. If that isn't the cause, unfortunately, I would say that it may be the big end bearing on the crank. We've seen a few now in later life on the FB page. Hoping it's something cheaper rather than a big fix.

Why wouldn't you just put a "Y" into the equation thus tying together the transmission and head together for much better breathing? On my race engines, I use a one way valve on the exhaust connected to the valve covers which as the engine rpm rises, it creates a vacuum below the piston. Free horseponies. I have a basketcase in the shop now that will have this incorporated into the build. It will all be documented so it will go up during the mods. Enjoyed your video. Thanks,

There's no need to connect to the transmission once you have a breather at the cylinder head. The transmission breathes perfectly well via the primary drive case 👍

I just am not a fan of those block off caps as the UV and engine heat makes them break down very rapidly compared to a nylon reinforced hose which provides much more protection from dirt and moisture when one of those pesky tiny little cracks develop we never see until its too late. @@MaxsGarajMahal Several people have tried linking hoses to the old and new breathers. There have been reports of oil still making its way to the air filter as a result. With the latest kits, I'm using silicone blanking caps and they seem to be quite durable. Thanks for the messages 👍

Wanted your opionion mate....I'm rebuilding a SMR510 '06 with 530RR internals and was looking at doing away with the Airbox and just running a Uni pod filter with a Intake fiiting allowing for breather hose. My concern is around positive crankcase ventilation and the effect if any this mod will have. Cheers.

Hi Karl, It should be OK for the engine. I haven't had much to do with the earlier Huskys, but I think they originally had their breather outlet on the tappet cover (where it should be) 👍 I don't see any issues with routing it to the pod type filter

Hmmmm, a little hard to say without knowing the history of the bikes, each one would need careful consideration. The 2008 one is getting on a bit in years and may be difficult to get parts for. However, that is also an issue for certain parts on the other 2 bikes... The 310 red head was only made for a couple of years, I believe the starter parts may be the same as earlier black head versions, but you'd need to check. (if they are, then parts from the SWM 300R will fit) The 449 is also becoming difficult to buy internal mechanical parts for the engine, if needed. KTM have not done much to support the bikes since buying the Husqvarna name. If those are the bikes on the table, I'd look at the one with the least hours on it and the best service history.

It's not 'necessary' unless the engine oil is coming out of the air filter housing. If you are filling the engine with 1150ml of oil and not having troubles, then you could run without it. If the engine is passing oil into the air filter, then this breather is the easiest way to prevent it.

Mike Keenan There's no need to include the original port in the system. Not having the connection to it stops the bulk of the oil making its way to the air filter and the gasses travel up past the cam chain to the new breather, rather than via the primary gear train on the RH side of the engine as it does from the factory. 👍

spotthedogg Hi Spot, Thanks for the enquiry. The main differences are ease of fitment and location. I wanted to make a breather that could be fitted with simple tools. Also, the location beside of the cam chain gear has less oil flinging around the area to be drawn into the breather. Some oil mist will still show on the filter element, but liquid oil should not flow from the filter housing. Another plus vs the ZT full kit is the simple single hose install. There's no additional connections to the oil drains and so no likelihood of a leak there.

It is not unusual for them to spit oil through the air filter. Relocating the breather will help to reduce the amount of oil going to the filter and in almost all cases, stop any leaking from the filter housing.

Abraham Feo Elvira The DMD breather stops the bike putting engine oil into the air filter. When you fill the engine oil to the correct level, many of the 449-511 models spit the oil into the air filter and leak onto the engine.

Jay Brapamaldi The anodising is as close as possible to the tappet cover powder coating. Unfortunately we were limited by the shades available. The original prototype batch were quite pink but all batches since have been much closer. I also kept in mind most other added parts are usually red anodised such as disc guards, bar end caps, lever tips etc. I decided to try to best match them.

But nobody can tell me what actual problems they have... What are the ones you know of? How can you prevent and/or fix them? Also how about parts supply? Do i get them from BMW or Husky (KTM) or even Kymco (engine parts) . Thanks in advance!

Ironbark Machinery and Hire Hi, These engines don't have any particularly bad issues. Most failures can be blamed on poor maintenance or bad info (Like dealers advising owners to run 800ml of oil instead of 1150 as per the manual) The stator screws can work loose and you can inspect them easily and replace them before they do. (check my other videos) The oil in the air filter was just a poor original breather design by BMW. Again, easy to fix with a replacement breather. Valves are nuclear proof. Pistons wear well, but the single compression ring set wears out. We have lists of part numbers on our Husqvarna 449-511 Owners Facebook Group page. Only other less common failure is the torque limiter in between the clutch and transmission, basically like a limited slip unit to reduce transmission shock loads. Not common, but can happen. It can be changed without splitting the motor. Parts availably, BMW for some parts, lots of alternative brand parts for common stuff like bearings and seals, KYB common parts for the suspension etc. Most guys buy any genuine parts out of online Husky shops in Europe. Hope that helps.

Ironbark Machinery and Hire I've used my 449 for tight single track riding for the last couple of years. It's slightly longer in the wheelbase than some other bikes so turns a little slower. I slid the forks up the triple clamps around 10mm, wound in the steering stop screws for a little more lock and use lots of rear brake on the entry to turns. It's not the perfect tight track bike, but I'm able to stay ahead of most of our riding group using it. It's is a great all rounder in my opinion. Stable at speed, good on hills and fine in the tight stuff. We're doing more and more technical riding, I've kept the Husky, but have also bought a Sherco 300 SEF-R 4t. The Husky won't stop you doing anything the Sherco can do, just the Sherco is lighter and more nimble. 👍

What is the "butterfly removal" ?
