Thanks very much, just recovered my bike (te511) after being stolen😤 for two days. Fresh oil just prior to being stolen, black as night upon recovery. I will check my valves now with confidence after watching your vid, nicely done👍🏼

I am planning to buy one, next week... All in all, do you recommend it? Is it reliable? Great vid by the way.
@Danger_mouse
@Danger_mouse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for checking out the video. At this age, reliability will depend on the servicing the bike has had and things like how much engine oil has been added during the oil changes. Generally they were pretty reliable, but if poorly serviced, can have big end bearing failures, and the crank is not a serviceable part. The rest of the engine is fairly solid, valves are very strong and rarely give any issues, clutch lasts forever and the transmission is fairly trouble free. With a good service history and low miles, it should be able to give a good few years of trouble free riding with some basic mods

@@Danger_mouse this one I have been looking is a 2011 model with 6.000 km and replaced piston at 4.800 km. Take a look if you can translate the page. www.car.gr/classifieds/bikes/view/31180777-husqvarna-te-449

OK, the 2011 is the first version. If it has been looked after it should be OK, if it has not then it might pretty worn inside. My own 2011 has been retired from normal riding at 9000km, but it has had oil changes every 5hrs and always full synthetic 5W40 oil. Later 2013 and 2014 models had DLC coatings on the crank pin to help with crank life. The 2011/12 models did not. If the owner can give you some history of services, or at least tell you what he has been doing then you could consider the bike.

Hey Dangermouse, thanks for this educational video. I just bought a supermoto converted 2012 txc 511.. the owner had been using it for off road and been regular on oil changes. I confirmed that when I went to checkout the bike. He did mention he always make sure he put 1 lit atleast with out oil filter swap.. I'm primarily planning to ride it on a go kart track and put some street miles (weekend rides). How often should I do maintenance on these and what all I need to check and worry about..

Thanks for the message. I was chatting with you on the Husqvarna Parts page on Facebook. 👍 I love the 449/512 platform bikes, but at this age now I would not be using one as my primary race bike. Crank failure is not an everyday occurrence, but it is something that happens to older hard ridden or poorly serviced bikes. Parts are now getting harder to come by to repair them. Cranks especially so, and these can not be serviced because of the 2 piece design, they must be replaced.

@@Danger_mouse what a small internet world. I love technology. Yeah I get what you're saying. But I must say it rides great, and one the most unique bikes that I have ever ridden, lots of character. Had only short 30min ride from seller house to mine I was smiling all along. It is definitely going to slay on track with that kind of weight and power and steep rake and some nice sticky tires. Unfortunately, like you said I'm afraid I'm might definitely break it at sometime. Thanks for the reply I might consider sm models or a 701

@@mohsyed2972 If treated well, and not too many km on it already, it might still have good life left in it yet but is difficult to say for sure 🙂👍 You go two ways, either keep it, service it and ride it leaving a little bit in reserve all the time (shifting up before the fuel cut out) and just enjoy it while it lasts.... Or, Look for a newer bike that can do the same job but with better parts backup 🤷 A 450/500 Sherco converted to SM or something similar 🙂👍

Hi great vid I managed to follow it really well so thanks for that. Question, what size breather did you use and where does it connect to? I think I can still see the original breather still going up to the air box. Thanks 👍🏼
@Danger_mouse
@Danger_mouse 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Keenan Thanks for the message. The breather uses the original hose removed from the transmission port and remains routed to the airbox fitting. The transmission port is then blocked off with a cap.

Hi @dangermouse I pulled head now not sure how to lock TDC in without special tool. Any tips?
@Danger_mouse
@Danger_mouse 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, You can locate the TDC dimple using a Phillips screwdriver, and then grind the tip of a suitable metric bolt with thread along its full length that will screw into the case where the plug lives. The 'special tool' is not terribly special 🙂👍

Hi Dangermouse, should I avoid the Husqvarna TE499 BMWx based Engine? In 2011 model or 2013 just looking at two possible bikes to buy at the moment want to make the right choice. Cheers CJ.
@Danger_mouse
@Danger_mouse 4 жыл бұрын
Hi CJ, Well serviced, the engines are a pretty good thing. The main cause for concern was bad dealer advice to run low oil volumes in the sump. The 2013 will have an updated crank with a DLC coating on the big end pin for better wear resistance, but it would also be wise to qizz the other about how much oil the bike takes for an oil change. The answer should be at least one litre, certainly not less like 800ml or 900ml. The original amount recommended was 1150ml including the oil filter. Internal parts are getting harder to get for the engine, the crank in particular, but there's still aftermarket parts for much of the rest of the bike. It would come down to the price and what you think it is worth to you. They do ride well even now

Anthony Moscatel Hi Anthony, I've been lucky so far and haven't needed to replace my torque limiter. I guess all the regular oil changes and keeping the correct oil level has helped the one in my bike last. I do have a spare damaged engine though and might look into doing a video on that down the track a little.
