Dmitri won this competition in Cardiff, Wales, in 1989. The finale of the competition became legendary, and to this day is known as "The battle of baritones". The other baritone was a local, Welsh guy, Bryn Terfel (now with the title Sir). Later Bryn said that upon hearing Dmitri's opening note in Ombra he knew Dmitri will win and if he had had a fan club back then, Bryn would have became his first member. The best compliment from the direct rival! If you want to follow Dmitri's repertoire (which I wholeheartedly recommend), you can choose from many genres that he covered. Operatic arias (preferably Tchaikovsky's Onegin and Yeletsky aria from the Pique Dame, I love you; and Verdi arias (Il Balen from the Trovatore, Eri tu from Masqued Ball, Rigoletto, Provenca from Traviata...), solo songs from Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Sviridov; old Russian romances (Dark eyes, Elegy, Snowstorm, I met you, Lonely accordionist, Monotonously rings the bell); war and postwar songs (Sluchainy waltz, Dark night, Cranes, Wait for me, Somewhere far away, Kachusha,...), popular songs (Tenderness, How young we were, Shine, shine my star, Don't rush...), or his a capella performances of Farewell Joy and Nochenka (Little Night). In each and every genre he could accommodate his style of singing, not using always the pure operatic manner. Dmitri was a genius, a beautiful, deep and sensitive soul with a talent and voice given from God. A poet once said: "in everyday life Dmitri is a great man, but when he steps on the stage, a direct channel to God is opened." And his dear and frequent partner, the famous American soprano, Renee Fleming, claimed that he has the most beautiful voice in the world, and must have had a third lung (as he could sustain a very long notes and sing 4-5 music bars on one breathe). He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May/June 2015, given from doctors some year and a half to live, but he endured whole year over that prognosis all the time performing all over the world, and sadly died on November 22, 2017. He was one of the most beautiful voices and surely the most handsome opera singer ever. ❤️ Welcome to Dmitri's rabbit hole!

To me "Ombra mai fù" from Handel's opera Serse (the Italian spelling of Xerxes which is the Latin version based on the Greek spelling of his name) should be sung by a countertenor or by a woman playing a man. When I saw the opera in our local opera house in Bielefeld we had a contralto singing it though another version was done by a countertenor in another opera house in our state kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpPJeH-mecmLhrs It you want to hear a more modern countertenor piece: This is "I know a bank" from Benjamin Britten's opera "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - it is Oberon singing kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHbZho2srNN5f8U I saw this production in London before it went to Bergen, Norway.
