A great audience! Withheld applause and whooping and hollering for a few contemplative moments. So often, someone in the audience is quick to shout "BRAVO!", to show their 'sophistication' that they know the piece and the score.

Whoa! What have I just watched? What a performance! There is a gravitas about these youngsters, as if they have truly grasped the serious message behind this music. The girl on the tympani drums is astonishing . She plays with her whole body and not just her wrists. Where is she now? Surely in a leading orchestra. It is an absolutely stunning performance - devastating even. The power and momentum are relentless. The orchestra really pulls out all the stops. You know where this is going right from the start, when the strings play with no vibrato to increase the effect. For this symphony is a requiem for all those who have been victims of state violence and oppression. This performance is more proficient, virtuosic, and more powerful (and exactly as Shostakovich intended) than any other I have heard. That it is a university orchestra is astonishing. And, yes, that final toll of the bell should ring out after the orchestra. It is a Tocsin, remember. A warning that history should not be repeated. DSCH said about his symphony, "It’s about the people, who have stopped believing because the cup of evil has run over". Indeed. Nothing much has changed.

Notice this: three (count 'em: 3) sets of tubular bells placed strategically in back to cover the entire width of the stage. Great idea, giving the outstanding bell decay at the end a truly all-encompassing, "stereophonic" (now there's a word you don't hear too often these days...its kinda taken for granted!) stage presence. Leave it to my alma mater BU creative geniuses for that one! Also, hats off to the bell players for their precise ensemble playing synchrony!

I must thank the timpanist for her use of hard mallets at 32:17 before and after. So many recordings I hear/ see timpanist using softer mallets and not being able to match the intensity of the orchestra. This recording is now my favourite thanks to the woman on Timpani. Breathe taking.

Justin McLean I could not agree more. Must be one of the best timpanists ever

A fantastic performance from a young orchestra. I liked how the chime bells were allowed to ring at the end until they faded away. Very atmospheric. It doesn't always happen.

Out of all the performances of this symphony (and there are many to choose from), this one is my absolute favorite. The timpanist is a BOSS!!! :)

The conductor has been named below by Eric and Veronica below as David Hoose. There are conductors who do wonderful work with student, festival or regional orchestras such as here and can at times achieve more interesting music making than the big professional orchestras. Another such conductor is Alois Hochstrasser. There is often far more rehearsal time than the big name orchestras have such as a whole term. A performance can be put together gradually and with great patience and musicality. There is the contribution of sectional tutors and instrumental tutors. And there is also the composer. The parts are well written.

The timpanist is absolutely superb. This is first time I have heard (and I've heard many performances of this stunning work) a bass drum that puts some muscle into that rhythm in the second movement.

Like many, I loooove the part between 29:28 and 33:49. It's rarely interpreted the way I like it though. Yet, here, with a university orchestra, they did it one of the best ways I've ever heard. Congrats!

Very good. Haitink w. Concertgebouw is my all time favourite. On YT though, I love to watch this. Powerful young people. Haha, the timpanist is the boss here.

I first heard this piece live, in Tallahassee, Florida. Maestro Hoose conducted that performance. First movement is so awesome and how he lets chimes go at end of piece til they die…eerie! Hi David!

Eric Lindholm I just asked the same question. I thought it was him. I played this symphony under him at Tanglewood 19 years ago, and he may be the only one who lets the chimes ring at the end!
