Anybody notice Dave Jackson just agrees with whatever the officials call on the ice? He would never dare say they did something incorrectly. He pretty blatantly changes the language to the rule he's referring to in his explanation here, by the way.

No he doesn’t. The language of the rule was changed a few years ago because people were getting confused that ‘principal’ point of contact means initial. But the league has been clear and consistent for a long time that what matters isn’t first point of contact, but rather whether the head is the bulk of the contact or whether the head contact is incidental as part of a full body check. Head contact is perfectly legal under the rules under certain circumstances, but the big one where it’s ALWAYS allowed is in conjunction with full body checks. Kulikov won’t even get a phone call from the league on this one. It’s nothing more than a garden variety interference penalty, and even that is questionable given the puck had just left the stick.

Not long ago that was a good hit. Not late, no jump. Don't be skating chin-first like that in the playoffs. The whole interpretation aspect of the head contact rule is still way too vague. They need to improve the language if they're going to call this.

If he’d turned slightly up ice with him instead of turning into him it would have been much better. Like I said in the video, that choice to turn into contact rather than stay the course or turn slightly out so that his hip would do the hitting, that choice made head contact inevitable.

Yep, when McAvoy hit Reinhart before he even had puck people were, "maybe a hair too early but this is playoff hockey". Now when panthers hit a hair too late people are riling for suspensions. It's borderline, but I'm inclined to agree. I've heard that 0.8 seconds is the limit for a clean hit, and I counted 25 frames after the puck came off Wennberg's stick to when he's hit, which is 0.83 seconds. But it's not like Kulikov commits to the hit after control is lost, so I think that no call would have been fine. Seems reasonable either way though since it's close.

For what it’s worth, I think this was borderline but probably not interference. But I can see why the refs thought it was late.

It's still head contact and interference. Body being the principle target is what stopped it from being a major. Wennberg reaches for the puck and misses it which puts him in a vulnerable spot. The puck is long gone by the time Kulikov nails him so it definitely is a penalty. Personally, I didn't have a problem with the 2. Rangers fans will say it's a major, Panthers fans will say it shouldn't even be a penalty.

Because he had the puck on his stick prior to swinging it, it is considered a follow-through and thus not possible to be called a high stick. By the letter of the rule, it was a legal high stick.

This is nowhere near the Trouba hit on Rodriguez. Kulikov's hit actually drove through his body (he didn't stick out his arms or anything). Is it charging/interference? They are just calling a big hit? Trouba the next game sticks out his elbow and nails a guy in the head...doesn't matter if the guy embellished a little, it's what he did that's the problem! 1 or 2 game suspension for Trouba!

The first thing you need to understand is… that the first point of contact is completely irrelevant with respect to the rule. What matters is whether the head contact is part of a full body check, or whether the head was ‘picked’ and absorbs most or all of the force of the hit. If it’s deemed a full body check, it really doesn’t matter how much head contact was made or whether the head was the initial point of contact - the hit will be deemed legal under the rules.

Panthers getting away with hits like that all playoff long is why I turned the Eastern conference games off. let both sides go at it, or call the fricking penalties correctly. Funny thing is Id wager the NHL thinks they are helping the panthers build that base... south florida fans are by and large very fair weather, winning yep they show up, struggle they leave early if they even bothered to show up.

Are you all incapable of looking at this objectively or what? Wennberg had it when Kulikov lined up the hit, unlucky that it bounced off his stick. He was going for a shoulder check, not his fault the man is skating at waist height.😂 Penalty? Sure. Dirty play? No.

100%, so many baby fans getting bent out of shape. Imagine these people watching one 70’s hockey game. The amount of face shoving, small constant spats, crazy hits that happened would have shocked pussified modern nhl fans. Nothing that happens nowadays is even worth discussing as “dirty” unless it’s ridiculously series like Matt petgraves. The dude had his head very low, wasn’t paying attention, got hit 0.000034 seconds after the puck left. It’s not that bad of a hit at all this would have been standard practice in the 70’s, now it causes people to whine and cry, the NHL fan base has become as soft as the NFL, NBA, and soccer

Body contact is part of the game, the body heals. Brains don't. It doesn't matter how it happens, but head hits need to be treated seriously. The NHL is _slowly_ headed in the right direction.

Refs seem to like the Panthers. Only 2 minutes for this and calling interference for a guy falling down on his own, which led to them scoring their only goal

The ref got the right call, any decent hockey player knows when ur reaching for pucks like that (especially in transition) you’re putting your body in a vulnerable position, kulikov or however you spell it had fantastic form going into that hit… definitely interference tho
